[Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (auteur) The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster that occurred on March 11, 2011, was caused by the To̅hoku tsunami, which was itself triggered by the devastating 9.0 Mw moment magnitude earthquake. This study investigates spatial and temporal changes of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) content in the North-Eastern part of Japan (Pacific Ocean) using a geostationary ocean color sensor. The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), which is centered on the Korean peninsula but could also observe the Japanese area, is able to acquire eight images per day, thus allowing the analysis of rapid daily changes in water mass. The analysis of GOCI data shows that SPM concentration notably increased both along the coast and within the Bay of Sendaï shortly after the tsunami. Motionless patterns of SPM were observed at 2, 14, 25, and 37 km from the coast. It is shown that SPM concentration rapidly decreased one month later. The SPM concentration did not remain high the following year, contrary to what was observed for the Sumatra Tsunami in 2004. The origin of SPM is also investigated in this study. Our analysis suggests that some of the SPM originates from the resuspension of bottom sediments due to the reflection of the tsunami on the coastline that leads to the migration of marine particles toward the sea surface. The fate of the SPM concentration is then discussed based on the analysis of meteorological conditions, river discharge, and tsunami wave properties. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an improved classification and mapping of vegetation types for all of Japan by utilizing the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (MCD43A4 product) data were compared to the conventional Surface Reflectance (MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products) data for the classification of vegetation types: evergreen coniferous forest, evergreen broadleaf forest, deciduous coniferous forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, shrubs, herbaceous, arable; and non-vegetation. Very rich spectral and temporal features were prepared from MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Random Forests classifier was employed for the classification of vegetation types with the support of ground truth data prepared in the research. Accuracy metrics—confusion matrix, overall accuracy, and kappa coefficient calculated through 10-fold cross-validation approach—were used for quantitative comparison of MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. The cross-validation results indicated better performance of the MCD43A4 (Overall accuracy = 0.73; Kappa coefficient = 0.69) product than conventional MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products (Overall accuracy = 0.70; Kappa coefficient = 0.66) for the classification. McNemar’s test was also used to confirm a significant difference (p-value = 0.0003) between MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Based on these results, by utilizing the MCD43A4 features, a new vegetation map was produced for all of Japan. The newly produced map showed better accuracy than the extant, MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1) and Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations (GLCNMO) product in Japan. [Termes IGN] Tokyo (Japon)Résumé : (Auteur) Semi-parametric geographically weighted generalized linear models (S-GWGLMs) are a useful tool in modeling a regression relationship where the impact of certain explanatory variables on a non-Gaussian distributed response variable is global while that of others is spatially varying. In this article, we propose for S-GWGLMs a new estimation method, called two-stage geographically weighted maximum likelihood estimation, and further develop a likelihood ratio statistic-based bootstrap test to determine constant coefficients in the models. The performance of the estimation and test methods is then evaluated by simulations. The results show that the proposed estimation method performs as well as the existing method in estimating both constant and spatially varying coefficients but it is more efficient in terms of computation time; the bootstrap test is of accurate size under the null hypothesis and satisfactory power in identifying spatially varying coefficients. A real-world data set is finally analyzed to demonstrate the application of the proposed estimation and test methods. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) Understanding how and when far-field continuous motions lead to giant subduction earthquakes remains a challenge. An important limitation comes from an incomplete description of aseismic mass fluxes at depth along plate boundaries. Here we analyse Earth’s gravity field variations derived from GRACE satellite data in a wide space-time domain surrounding the Mw 9.0 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. We show that this earthquake is the extreme expression of initially silent deformation migrating from depth to the surface across the entire subduction system. Our analysis indeed reveals large-scale gravity and mass changes throughout three tectonic plates and connected slabs, starting a few months before March 2011. Before the Tohoku-Oki earthquake rupture, the gravity variations can be explained by aseismic extension of the Pacific plate slab at mid-upper mantle depth, concomitant with increasing seismicity in the shallower slab. For more than two years after the rupture, the deformation propagated far into the Pacific and Philippine Sea plate interiors, suggesting that subduction accelerated along 2,000 km of the plate boundaries in March 2011. This gravitational image of the earthquake’s long-term dynamics provides unique information on deep and crustal processes over intermediate timescales, which could be used in seismic hazard assessment. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban multiple land use change (LUC) modelling enables the realistic simulation of LUC processes in complex urban systems; however, such modelling suffers from technical challenges posed by complicated transition rules and high spatial heterogeneity when predicting the LUC of a highly developed area. Tree-based methods are powerful tools for addressing this task, but their predictive capabilities need further examination. This study integrates tree-based methods and cellular automata to simulate multiple LUC processes in the Greater Tokyo Area. We examine the predictive capability of 4 tree-based models – bagged trees, random forests, extremely randomised trees (ERT) and bagged gradient boosting decision trees (bagged GBDT) – on transition probability prediction for 18 land use transitions derived from 8 land use types. We compare the predictive power of a tree-based model with multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and among themselves. The results show that tree-based models generally perform better than MLP, and ERT significantly outperforms the three other tree-based models. The outstanding predictive performance of ERT demonstrates the advantages of introducing bagging ensemble and a high degree of randomisation into transition probability modelling. In addition, through variable importance evaluation, we found the strongest explanatory powers of neighbourhood characteristics for all land use transitions; however, the size of the impacts depends on the neighbourhood land use type and the neighbourhood size. Furthermore, socio-economic and policy factors play important roles in transitions ending with high-rise buildings and transitions related to industrial areas.
