[Termes IGN] Tokyo (Japon)Résumé : (auteur) Weather condition is part of our everyday life and we knows that it has effect in our decision for our activity choices. This explores the weather effects on people’s everyday activity pattern, specifically, on the after work activity patterns of office workers in Tokyo, Japan. Activity of people where estimated using GPS traces of their mobile phone captured for 1 year overlaid with Yellow pages information. Start and end of working time in Japan depends on each company but usually it is around 8:00-17:00 or 9:00-18:00. For this study, times from 18:00 are considered the after work hours. Using weather data in Tokyo, effects of different weather parameter, such as precipitation amount, temperature and wind velocity, to changes in workers after work activity pattern were studied to see prominent and sudden changes in workers choice of activity from their usual activity pattern that might be affected by changes in weather. This study sheds light in understanding influences of weather conditions on office workers’ choices of their daily activities and how mobile phone data can be used to investigate influences of environmental phenomena to urban activities. On May 10, 2013, GSI started providing nationwide the observation data from the Quasi-Zenith Satellites System and GLONASS in addition to GPS, opening the multi GNSS era in Japan. This report provides the background and history behind this modernization of GEONET, the effect of the use of multi GNSS confirmed so far, and the plan for the future modernization. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Over the last fifty years, worldwide city shrinkage has become an increasingly common phenomenon. How to deal with the shrinking issue, and any problems caused by its chain effects, still remains a challenge for researchers from various disciplines. In this paper, Japan’s shrinking phenomena is analyzed based on a case study of Katsuura City. Changes in land use, population, industry, and residential preferences are detected through an analysis of census data, land-use maps and questionnaire surveys. On the basis of this analysis, a simulation model consisting of a land-use change model generated by rent-gap theory-based cellular automata combined with a residential migration decision model based on a multinomial logit model is built to project the current pattern of shrinkage in the case study area, and in order to compare various policy scenarios. [Termes IGN] sondeur acoustiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The precision of GPS/acoustic seafloor positioning was improved by introducing a hull-mounted onboard system in March 2008, which allows us to conduct acoustic ranging measurements with the vessel sailing along the pre-determined track lines, while the early system before 2008 could only adopt the uncontrollable drifting observation. The continuity of the positioning results due to the transition was first confirmed through the comparison between results from sailing and drifting observations conducted in parallel. Using the data acquired for about 3 years since 2008, the repeatability of the determined position for the sailing observation was evaluated to be about 2 cm in root mean squares in the horizontal component, significantly better than that for the early drifting observation. The improvement of positioning precision probably resulted from the improvement of geometric distribution of acoustic ranging data by controlling the track lines. It was also shown that the sailing observation allows to obtain reliable results with a smaller amount of data. Comparison between the results in different sea regions suggests that positioning precision is better in the region along the Nankai Trough than in the region along the Japan Trench, probably because of the complicated acoustic velocity structure of seawater often observed in the latter. Furthermore, the precision of height determination was also improved, which leads us to expect that vertical crustal movement will be detectable in the future through accumulation of data as well as further technology development. [Termes IGN] penteRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) enables us to obtain information about vertical forest structure directly, and it has often been used to measure forest canopy height or above-ground biomass. However, little attention has been given to comparisons of the accuracy of the different estimation methods of canopy height or to the evaluation of the error factors in canopy height estimation. In this study, we tested three methods of estimating canopy height using the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) onboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), and evaluated several factors that affected accuracy. Our study areas were Tomakomai and Kushiro, two forested areas on Hokkaido in Japan. The accuracy of the canopy height estimates was verified by ground-based measurements. We also conducted a multivariate analysis using quantification theory type I (multiple-regression analysis of qualitative data) and identified the observation conditions that had a large influence on estimation accuracy. The method using the digital elevation model was the most accurate, with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 3.2 m. However, GLAS data with a low signal-to-noise ratio (?10.0) and that taken from September to October 2009 had to be excluded from the analysis because the estimation accuracy of canopy height was remarkably low. After these data were excluded, the multivariate analysis showed that surface slope had the greatest effect on estimation accuracy, and the accuracy dropped the most in steeply sloped areas. We developed a second model with two equations to estimate canopy height depending on the surface slope, which improved estimation accuracy (RMSE = 2.8 m). These results should prove useful and provide practical suggestions for estimating forest canopy height using spaceborne LiDAR.
