[Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (auteur) This study aims to develop three novel GIS-based models combining Genetic Algorithm (GA), Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO) and Simulated Annealing (SA) with Support Vector Regression (SVR) for groundwater potential (GP) mapping in the governorate of Tafillah, Jordan. Twelve topographical, hydrological and geological factors were considered. The mapping process was done with and without feature selection (FS) conducted by integration of SVR model with GA, BBO and SA algorithms. The accuracy of these models was evaluated using the area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. Comparisons among the models uncovered that the SVR-RBF-GA and SVR-RBF-BBO models performed better than the SVR-RBF-SA. The AUROC for two mentioned models were 0.964 and 0.996 in training and testing runs, respectively, while this metric was 0.953 and 0.986 for SVR-RBF-SA model in training and testing runs, respectively. The results showed that after FS, the models are more accurate in test data than train data. [Termes IGN] transformationRésumé : (auteur) The interaction of three variables—territory, cartography, and terrain—can account for landscape transformation processes at Naharayim/el Baqura, in the Jordan Valley, over the last century and a half. This interface is examined across three historical periods marking the passage from nomadism to sedentism: The Ottoman Period (1858–1917), the British Mandate (1918–1948), and the statehood period (1948–1994). Adopting a hybridized and interdisciplinary approach at the juncture of history, landscape architecture, and geopolitics, this work performs an in-depth analysis of the three variables in each period and examines their relationship to power. The analysis emphasizes territorial concepts and border-making, mapping practices, land survey techniques, infrastructure, agricultural development, and water regimes. It will be shown that mapping has been a medium of politics, with landscapes often being subjugated to political or territorial ambitions. Data is gathered from primary sources, including some previously unknown from the periods in question, fieldwork, interviews, a point cloud data set from both banks of the Jordan River, as well as contemporary social scientific scholarship. It is argued that landscape is neither a natural feature nor a man-made system of engineered spaces, but rather the outcome of a dynamic interaction between natural landscape, human imagination, and various iterations of power, be they natural, theological, technological, political, or military. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) This work focused on studying the relationships between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and daytime and nighttime Land Surface Temperature (LST) in winter, spring, summer and fall and investigating the effects of land cover on these variables in Jordan, which represents a typical semi-arid to arid environment. Using MODIS-based data for the year 2017, multiple procedures were applied: one-way analysis of variance followed by comparison between means, Pearson correlation coefficient, global Moran’s index, simple linear regression, second-order polynomial regression, recursive-partitioning regression and geographically weighted regression. The results showed that land cover explained fair amount of the variability in NDVI but small amount of the variability in daytime and nighttime LST. In addition, an inverted surface urban heat island pattern was observed in daytime. Finally, applying different regression procedures produced different perspectives about the complex and variable relationships between daytime and nighttime LST and NDVI in different seasons. The data used contained accident types and occurrence time. Fatality and injury were also studied with spatial-temporal analysis. Moreover, accident hot spots were predicted performing Weighted Overlay Method (WOM) and Fuzzy Overlay Method (FOM), which are widely used in decision making and alternatives analysis based on the results obtained from Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Point Density (PD) method was used to verify hot spots in urban region that resulted from the mentioned two methods. Traffic accidents’ hot spots were predicted for Irbid City in Jordan using the data of the accidents that occurred between 2013 and 2015. Both WOM and FOM proved to be successful in identifying hot spots in parts of study area when verified to PD surface. Final results showed that eight hot spots were pointed out; three are road sections and five are major intersections, which were analyzed to get accident-contributing factors and suggest the proper remedies. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This study aims to (1) determine the seasonalities and spatial and temporal rates of change of MODIS-based daytime and nighttime land surface temperature (LST) for the last 19 years from 2000 to 2018 and (2) investigate whether these rates are induced by natural (represented by elevation) or anthropogenic (represented by population counts) forcing. The study area is Jordan – a typical Middle Eastern semi-arid to arid country. Time-series additive seasonal decomposition and simple linear regression produced the following results. (1) For both daytime and nighttime the highest LST values were observed in June while the lowest LST values were observed in December. (2) No significant linear rates of change of LST were noticed in daytime, while significant linear rates of increase of LST, which varied from 0.041°C/year to 0.119°C/year, were observed in nighttime in about one-third of the area of the country mainly in the western parts. (3) The significant linear rates of increase of nighttime LST increased significantly by 0.005°C/year for every 1,000 m increase in elevation and by 0.003°C/year for every 1,000 people increase in population counts. (4) Both natural and anthropogenic factors affected LST in nighttime; however, anthropogenic factors seemed to be more important than natural factors.
