[Termes IGN] prédictionRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this study is to test and compare two probabilistic based models (frequency ratio and weightsof- evidence) with regard to regional gold potential mapping at Kelantan, Malaysia. Until now these models have not been used for the purpose of mapping gold potential areas in Malaysia. This study analyzed the spatial relationship between gold deposits and geological factors such as lithology, faults, geochemical and geophysical data in geographical information system (GIS) software. About eight (8) gold deposits and five (5) related factors are identified and quantified for their spatial relationships. Then, all factors were combined to generate a predictive gold potential map. The predictive maps were then validated by comparing them with known gold deposits using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and “area under the curve” (AUC) graphs. The results of validation showed accuracies of 80% for the frequency ratio and 74% for the weightsof- evidence model, respectively. The results demonstrated the usefulness of frequency ratio and weights-of-evidence modeling techniques in mineral exploration work to discover unknown gold deposits in Kelantan, Malaysia. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban areas consist of spectrally and spatially heterogeneous features. Advanced information extraction techniques are needed to handle high resolution imageries in providing detailed information for urban planning applications. This study was conducted to identify a technique that accurately maps impervious and pervious surfaces from WorldView-2 (WV-2) imagery. Supervised per-pixel classification algorithms including Maximum Likelihood and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were utilized to evaluate the capability of spectral-based classifiers to classify urban features. Object-oriented classification was performed using supervised SVM and fuzzy rule-based approach to add spatial and texture attributes to spectral information. Supervised object-oriented SVM achieved 82.80% overall accuracy which was the better accuracy compared to supervised per-pixel classifiers. Classification based on the proposed fuzzy rule-based system revealed satisfactory output compared to other classification techniques with an overall accuracy of 87.10% for pervious surfaces and an overall accuracy of 85.19% for impervious surfaces. [Termes IGN] MalaisieRésumé : (Auteur) We analyzed the 10-year record (1999-2009) of SeaWinds Ku-band microwave backscatter from humid tropical forest regions in South America, Africa, and Indonesia/Malaysia. While backscatter was relatively stable across much of the region, it declined by 1-2 dB in areas of known large-scale deforestation, and increased by up to 1-2 dB in areas of secondary forest or plantation forest growth and in major metropolitan areas. The reduction in backscatter over 142 18.5 km * 18.5 km blocks of tropical forest was correlated with gross forest cover loss (as determined from Landsat data analysis) (R = -0.78); this correlation improved when restricted to humid tropical forest blocks in South America with high initial forest cover (R = -0.93, n = 22). This study shows that scatterometer-based analyses can provide an important geophysical data record leading to robust identification of the spatial patterns and timing of large-scale change in tropical forests. The coarse spatial resolution of SeaWinds ( ~ 10 km) makes it unsuitable for mapping deforestation at the scale of land-use activity. However, due to a combination of instrument stability, sensitivity to canopy change and insensitivity to atmospheric effects, and straight-forward data processing, Ku-band scatterometery can provide a fully independent assessment of large-scale tropical forest canopy dynamics which may complement the interpretation of higher resolution optical remote sensing. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) This study provides a comprehensive framework to mitigate or prevent forest and land (or wildland) fire disaster in Malaysia. This system supports emergency response and preparedness for wildland fire by means of integrated modelling, monitoring and mapping of fire danger. In this framework, multi-sensor applications for monitoring fire danger and fire activity are linked with decision-aid models in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment to generate information required for wildland fire management. Using a customized version of the spatial Fire Management System software, components of the Malaysia Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) are calculated to provide fire weather, fire behaviour and wildfire threat information. Wildfire threat ratings (WTRs) are assessed on the basis of fire occurrence risk, potential fire behaviour, suppression capability and values at risk. Outputs from the Malaysia FDRS were integrated with hotspots extracted from remote sensing data to generate combined maps of active fire locations, fire danger, potential fire behaviour and uncontrolled wildland fire (or wildfire) threat. In case of wildfire, remotely sensed data were also used to generate wildfire affected area and emergency response maps for emergency management. The system architecture and application models for wildfire analysis, which aid decision-making components for wildfire mitigation and relief, are described. These include early warning of fire, risk analysis, damage assessment and emergency response analysis. This article provides the first documentation of a national, operational system linking fire danger rating with socio-economic values, as defined by the WTR models, to guide fire and rescue decision-making during wildfire events. It is finally shown how the proposed system can reduce the risk offire management disputes in Malaysia by directing the conflict to a more favourable resolution. [Termes IGN] ThaïlandeRésumé : (Auteur) Quantifying the above ground biomass of tropical forests is critical for understanding the dynamics of carbon fluxes between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, as well as monitoring ecosystem responses to environmental change. Remote sensing remains an attractive tool for estimating tropical forest biomass but relationships and methods used at one site have not always proved applicable to other locations. This lack of a widely applicable general relationship limits the operational use of remote sensing as a method for biomass estimation, particularly in high biomass ecosystems. Here, multispectral Landsat TM and JERS-1 SAR data were used together to estimate tropical forest biomass at three separate geographical locations: Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand. Texture measures were derived from the JERS-1 SAR data using both wavelet analysis and Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix methods, and coupled with multispectral data to provide inputs to artificial neural networks that were trained under four different training scenarios and validated using biomass measured from 144 field plots. When trained and tested with data collected from the same location, the addition of SAR texture to multispectral data showed strong correlations with above ground biomass (r = 0.79, 0.79 and 0.84 for Thailand, Malaysia and Brazil respectively). Also, when networks were trained and tested with data from all three sites, the strength of correlation (r = 0.55) was stronger than previously reported results from the same sites that used multispectral data only. Uncertainty in estimating AGB from different allometric equations was also tested but found to have little effect on the strength of the relationships observed. The results suggest that the inclusion of SAR texture with multispectral data can go someway towards providing relationships that are transferable across time and space, but that further work is required if satellite remote sensing is to provide robust and reliable methodologies for initiatives such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+).
