Considering the extent and the consequences of the damage caused by the large fire, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki began to collaborate with national authorities to provide all the necessary information to develop forest protection and restoration plans. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of three main textural indices for the automatic evaluation and classification of landscape scenic quality using digital ground photographs. Based on the textural indices that are commonly used in landscape ecology, the richness, diversity and dominance indices were selected to be examined, and the results from the application of these indices to a sample of ground photographs are described in this paper. The application of the textural indices to the sample of photographs takes place in two different ways, using a geographic information system (GIS) that aims to describe the general and partial heterogeneity of the landscape appearing in each photograph. Furthermore, we investigate the effectiveness of the indices selected as to the classification of the landscape's scenic quality, with the results being compared to other results derived from a research programme of the National Technical University of Athens. Comments and suggestions are presented for further investigation. The main conclusion of the investigation is that the texture indices are sensitized in the landscape's scenic quality, a fact that is positive and encourages the pursuit of further research. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, the efficiency of an integrated operational system, based on three satellite infrared techniques, to support nowcasting and very short range forecasting of high precipitation rates provided by a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model is examined. Three algorithms, one for the detection and tracking of convective cloud cells and another two for rainfall estimation, are applied on satellite sensor data in order to qualitatively and quantitatively verify the precipitation forecasts provided by a NWP model. The application of the detection and tracking algorithm aims at verifying qualitatively, in real time, the precipitation forecasts by monitoring the detected convective cloud cells, at the same time intervals that the model forecasts are given. The application of the rainfall estimation techniques on satellite sensor data is needed for both quantitative and qualitative crosscomparisons with the model outputs. The developed tool is applied in a case of intense precipitation over Greece. The results of the application are promising and show the potential for the implementation of the integrated system as a support tool for nowcasting and very short range forecasting by performing realtime validation of NWP precipitation forecasts. [Termes IGN] lacRésumé : (Auteur) This study investigates the potential of applying the radial basis function (RBF) neural network architecture for the classification of multispectral very high spatial resolution satellite images into 13 classes of various scales. For the development of the RBF classifiers, the innovative fuzzy means training algorithm is utilized, which is based on a fuzzy partition of the input space. The method requires only a short amount of time to select both the structure and the parameters of the RBF classifier. The new technique was applied to the area of Lake Kerkini, which is a wetland of great ecological value, located in northern Greece. Eleven experiments were carried out in total in order to investigate the performance of the classifier using different input parameters (spectral and textural) as well as different window sizes and neural network complexities. For comparison purposes the same satellite scene was classified using the maximum likelihood (MLH) classification with the same set of training samples. Overall, the neural network classifiers outperformed the MLH classification by 10-17%, reaching a maximum overall accuracy of 78%. Analysis showed that the selection of input parameters is vital for the success of the classifiers. On the other hand, the incorporation of textural analysis and/or modification of the window size do not affect the performance substantially. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a set of multi-spectral images were used to locate and identify the irregular settlements zones in the Athens metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, indexes-Brightness Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-and supervised classification are computed and applied to the images. In order to locate and identify these regions, common biophysical characteristics related to the urban and suburban landscape structures were identified. Five types of biophysical class were distinguished: (1) inner dense city with high buildings and absence of vegetation; (2) suburban areas with recent construction of buildings and absence of vegetation ; (3) green suburban areas; (4) high-density vegetation zones; and (5) recent forest fire regions. Some limitations are presented and discussed due to confusion of land-cover types between bare land and recent constructed areas, or between various types of vegetation and some urban green zones. Results are integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowing the user to check the legaI situation of the classified areas using the Urban Plan of Athens (1983-1995) documentation. This facilitates a proposal and representation of topology of irregular settlements. Such techniques might be very fruitful for developing countries or recently industrialized ones to identify speciflic irregular settlements.
