Three case studies are reported, for urban, suburban and rural areas, with a combined use of two mobile applications: a commercial software package (ESRI’s Collector for ArcGIS) and an opensource self-developed application named BoundGeometry. The parameters of time, quality and accuracy are assessed and the identified difficulties are classified. It is concluded that the method is applicable both in developed and developing countries, and each time adjustable to the available infrastructure. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (auteur) The emergence of low-cost, navigation-type receivers capable to provide carrier-phase data (the so-called high-sensitivity carrier-phase positioning) has been steadily growing over the recent years. The aim of this study was to evaluate the positioning performance of a high-sensitivity receiver in a network real-time kinematic environment for mapping surveying applications. Specifically, using as rover receiver the u-blox NEO-7P module and the low-cost antenna Tallysman TW2410, sets of data were collected for the purpose of mapping surveying. The external accuracy of the obtained solutions is considered using different positioning techniques and the internal indicators of the system during real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning are assessed. The assessment indicates that in benign environments this type of receivers produce results that are comparable to RTK positioning using geodetic receivers and with a significantly lower cost. A set of corresponding microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) are used along with a radio transmission unit and a microprocessor. In conjunction with the WSN, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) measurements are used. Specifically, the aim of this work is to introduce a low-cost WSN node with verified repeatability that will raise an initial signal for possible slope change which will be further verified by TLS measurements. The paper demonstrates the deployment of the developed design for a 3-month period in the Corinth Canal in Greece and presents indicative results. [Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents a detailed accuracy evaluation of the Hellenic Geodetic Reference System 1987 (HGRS87), a non-geocentric traditional local datum which was established thirty years ago and it is still used as the official coordinate system for surveying applications in Greece. This is the first time that a large-scale assessment of HGRS87 is performed, which aims to reveal its weakness by quantifying its consistency with a higher quality ITRF/GNSS-based frame over the entire country. A geodetic velocity model is employed in our analysis in an attempt to eliminate the accumulated geodynamical distortions of the (static) HGRS87 coordinates, and thus to provide a more judicious comparison between the underlying frames at a common epoch. Our results show that, even after removing the geodynamical distortions, the average accuracy of HGRS87 at national scale remains worse than 45 cm, yet significant variations exist in its regional accuracy level over different parts of Greece. [Termes IGN] topographeRésumé : (Auteur) Volunteered geographic information (VGI) has enabled many innovative applications in various scientific fields. This paper introduces a new framework called “collaborative cloud-based land surveying” (CCLS) that uses VGI principles for data sharing among surveyor engineers to boost the productivity and improve the quality of their applications. A cloud-based spatio-temporal data repository is presented, aiming to facilitate the sharing of VGI among surveyor engineers. A fully-functional distributed software application has been developed and used to apply CCLS in a large-scale land surveying project run by the Greek Ministry of Culture, which involves the mapping of the historic center of Athens. Results from the data analysis of hundreds of measurements indicate a substantial (30% to 60%) error reduction and also a significant productivity raise (22%). The collected measurements are shared in an online database, accessible by professional surveyors who can in turn contribute their own data to further enhance the CCLS system.
