[Termes descripteurs IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Data classification, i.e. organising data items in groups (classes), is a general technique widely used in data visualisation and cartography, in particular, for creation of choropleth maps. Conventionally, data are classified by dividing the data range into intervals and assigning the same symbol or colour to all data falling within an interval. For instance, the intervals may be of the same length or may include the same number of data items. We propose a method for defining intervals so that some quantity represented by values of another attribute is equally distributed among the classes. This kind of classification supports exploratory analysis of relationships between the attribute used for the classification and the distribution of the phenomenon whose quantity is represented by the additional attribute. The approach may be especially useful when the distribution of the phenomenon is very unequal, with many data items having zero or low quantities and quite a few items having larger quantities. With such a distribution, standard statistical analysis of the relationships may be problematic. We demonstrate the potential of the approach by analysing data referring to a set of spatially distributed people (patients) in relationship to characteristics of the areas in which the people live. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Visualizations of 3D cadastral information incorporating both intrinsically spatial and non-spatial information are examined here. The design of a visualization prototype is linked to real-case 3D property information. In an interview with domain experts, the functional and visual features of the prototype are assessed. The choice of rendering attributes was identified as an important aspect for further analysis. A computational approach to systematic assessment of the consequences of different graphical design choices is proposed. This approach incorporates a colour similarity metric, visual saliency maps, and k-nearest-neighbour (kNN) classification to estimate risks of confusing or overlooking relevant elements in a visualization. The results indicate that transparency is not an independent visual variable, as it affects the apparent colour of 3D objects and makes them inherently more difficult to distinguish. Transparency also influences visual saliency of objects in a scene. The proposed analytic approach was useful for visualization design and revealed that the conscious use of graphical attributes, like combinations of colour, transparency, and line styles, can improve saliency of objects in a 3D scene. [Termes descripteurs IGN] optimisation (mathématiques)Résumé : (auteur) Choropleth mapping provides a simple but effective visual presentation of geographical data. Traditional choropleth mapping methods assume that data to be displayed are certain. This may not be true for many real-world problems. For example, attributes generated based on surveys may contain sampling and non-sampling error, and results generated using statistical inferences often come with a certain level of uncertainty. In recent years, several studies have incorporated uncertain geographical attributes into choropleth mapping with a primary focus on identifying the most homogeneous classes. However, no studies have yet accounted for the possibility that an areal unit might be placed in a wrong class due to data uncertainty. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a robustness measure and incorporating it into the optimal design of choropleth maps. In particular, this study proposes a discretization method to solve the new optimization problem along with a novel theoretical bound to evaluate solution quality. The new approach is applied to map the American Community Survey data. Test results suggest a tradeoff between within-class homogeneity and robustness. The study provides an important perspective on addressing data uncertainty in choropleth map design and offers a new approach for spatial analysts and decision-makers to incorporate robustness into the mapmaking process. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Typographic variables were only briefly discussed by Bertin with no example applications. We review historic examples to extend Bertin’s framework with literal encoding, 10 typographic attributes, variations on scope including characters, words, phrases and paragraphs, and more layout types. We then apply the framework to Bertin’s population dataset to create 11 new typographic visualizations. The approach raises questions for new research such as readability, semantic association, interaction, and comprehension. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Trajectory analysis has attracted growing attention in the research field of geography. Beyond traditional moving object trajectories, another type of trajectory exists in which the coordinates are object attributes rather than geographical coordinates. In this paper, a framework to analyse these so-called attribute trajectories is proposed that uses four techniques typically employed in the analysis of moving object trajectories: the Reeb graph, the similarity matrix, the convoy and the mega-convoy. The Reeb graph provides the ability to visualise the temporal dynamics of attribute similarities. The similarity matrix is a supplement of the Reeb graph whose purpose is to visualise the pairwise similarities among the attributes. Moreover, the similarity matrix forms a basis for clustering. The convoy highlights objects whose attributes remain similar for a sufficiently long period. The mega-convoy reduces the number of convoys and reveals their evolutionary histories by merging overlapping convoys. A small real-world meteorological dataset is used as an example to illustrate the attribute trajectory analysis framework and the techniques. This paper aims to form a starting point for applying trajectory analysis techniques in many research fields.
