[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) National-scale forest inventories have endeavoured to include holistic measurements of forest health inclusive of attributes such as downed dead wood and tree regeneration that occur in the forest understory. Inventories may require year-round measurement of inventory plots with some of these measurements being affected by seasonal obstructions (e.g. snowpacks and seasonal flooding). In order to assess the potential effects that snow/water obstructions may have on the measurement/analysis of forest seedlings across large scales, the differences in seedling abundance between two inventory measurements (∼5-year remeasurement period) and as affected by snow/water depth was ascertained using a repeated forest inventory across the eastern US. Results indicate that there is a general trend of decreasing seedling density over time (−33.16 seedlings ha−1 year−1) in the eastern US, with snow/water depths in excess of 15 cm significantly affecting resulting estimates of seedling abundance. Although snow/water obstruction to seedling measurement occurred on ∼9 per cent of inventory plots across the eastern US, snow was a much more common situation occurring on nearly 50 per cent of plots (at time 1, 2 or both) at high latitudes (>45°). Given the statistically significant effect of snow/water on seedling abundance estimates, tree regeneration assessments should not include observations obstructed by snow/water depths that exceed minimum seedling heights. Furthermore, seedling abundance inventories may mitigate the influence of measurement obstructions by sampling only during the summer or incorporating climate information into their sampling logistics. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses real-time monitoring of the precipitable water vapor (PWV) from GNSS measurements and presents some results obtained from 6-month long GNSS PWV experiments using international and domestic GNSS networks. In the real-time GNSS PWV monitoring system a server/client structure is employed to facilitate formation of PWV networks and single-differenced GNSS measurements are utilized to mitigate errors in GNSS satellites’ orbits and clocks. An issue relating to baseline length between the server and clients is discussed in detail and as a result the PWV monitor is configured to perform in two modes depending on the baseline length. The server estimates sequentially the zenith wet delay of the individual stations, which is then converted into the PWV of the stations. We evaluate system performance by comparing the real-time PWV solution with reference solutions including meteorological measurements obtained with radiosondes and deferred-time precision GNSS PWV solutions. Results showed that the standard deviation of difference between the real-time PWV and the reference solutions ranged from 2.1 to 3.4 mm in PWV for a 6-month long comparison, which was improved to 1.4 to 2.9 mm by reducing comparison period to 20 days in winter. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) Radiometric measurements could provide continuous information about atmospheric conditions. In this paper, a sky status indicator (SSI) is proposed as a real-time recognition criterion for the detection, in particular, of the presence of rain events along the propagation path. The computation of the SSI is based on ground-based brightness temperature measurements, at 23.8 and 31.4 GHz, collected in Cabauw, Netherlands, in 2009 by the ESA Atmospheric Propagation and Profiling System (ATPROP) multichannel radiometer. A validation analysis is carried out between simulated data, which are computed by applying the radiative transfer equation to a database of radiosonde profiles collected in De Bilt, Netherlands, by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, and two data sets of radiometric observations at two elevation angles (è equal to 90° and è equal to 69.6°). The analysis based on SSI probability distribution functions has allowed for calculation of the boundary threshold values that are able to discriminate the status of the sky. Furthermore, performances of the SSI were validated against rainfall measurements collected at the ground by a rain gauge located near the ESA ATPROP multichannel radiometer.
