[Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The present study uses a satellite remote sensing approach for assesssing coastal sediment dynamics in the western side of the Zanzibar channel, Tanzania. Four Landsat images (1986, 1998, 1999 and 2000) were used for the study. investigation of the four images revealed that the Ruvu delta north of the river mouth has been growing rapidly, especially between 1986 and 1998, with an annual northward linear growth rate of about 133m year -1 and an annual areal growth rate of about 1 km2 every 3 years. The study identified a palaeo-shoreline feature that is parallel to the present shoreline and located about 1.9 km inland from the present shoreline. An important sediment contributor to river Ruvu is derived from the Uluguru Mountains, a tropical mountainous area located about 200 km from the coastline of the Tanzania mainland. The working hypothesis is that either the observed growth of the delta occured at a gradual rate between 1986 and 1998 or it was mainly an episodic event related to the extreme rainfall events such as the 1997/98 El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, which was associated with extreme rainfall and widespread landslides. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The northern part of Lantau Island in Hong Kong is undergoing very rapid development following completion of the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok on the island. This development is adjacent to a range of steeply sloping hills that experience levels of annual rainfall in the range of 2000-2400mm. Rainfall-induced landslides on this steeply sloping natural terrain are therefore potential hazards to property developments downslope. The objective of this study is to characterize the initiation process and the subsequent travel distance of the landslides resulting from recent rainstorms, by integrating aerial photogrammetry with GIS. These landslides, which occurred during the 18 July 1992 and 4-5 November 1993 rainstorms, were interpreted from sequential aerial photographs. Data on these landslides were collected to form a landslide database. Such data, together with information on geology, slope gradient, elevation, slope aspect, slope shape, and vegetation cover were entered into a Geographical Information System (GIS), to determine the geologic and geomorphologic characteristics of the landslide source and to estimate the travel distance of landslide debris. It is demonstrated that this integrated approach of GIS and aerial photogrammetry could serve as an effective means of landslide characterization. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Snow cover has a substantial impact on processes involved in the interaction between atmosphere and surface, and the knowledge of snow parameters is important in both climatology and weather forecasting. With the upcoming launch of Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) instruments on Envisat, enhanced snow-mapping capabilities are foreseen. In this paper fully polarimetric C- and L-band airborne SAR data, ERS SAR and auxiliary data from various snow conditions in mountainous areas are analysed in order to determine the optimum ASAR modes for snow monitoring. The data used in this study are from the Norwegian part of the snow and ice experiment within the European Multi-sensor Airborne Campaign (EMAC'95) acquired in the Kongsfjellet area, located in Norway, 66°N, 14°E. Fully polarimetric C- and L-band SAR data from ElectroMagnetic Institute SAR (EMISAR), an airborne instrument operated by the Danish Center for Remote Sensing (DCR), were acquired in March, May, and July 1995. In addition, several ERS SAR, airborne photos, field and auxiliary data were acquired.
A larger separation between wet snow and bare ground in EMISAR C-VV polarisation data was found at high incidence angle (55°) compared to lower incidence angle (45°). Crosspolarized observations from bare ground, dry and wet snow in the incidence angle range 35° to 65° are below the specified Envisat ASAR noise floor of -20-22 dB. The backscattering angular dependency for wet snow and bare ground derived from EMISAR C-VV and ERS SAR data corresponds well, and agrees to some extent with volume and surface scattering model results. The C-band is more sensitive to variation in snow properties than the L-band.Numéro de notice : A2003-282 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/0143116021000053319 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/0143116021000053319 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=22577

[Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (Auteur) Here on Earth, high winds, heavy rains, deep snow, and other forms of severe weather can disrupt our daily lives. Conditions on the Sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, and the ionosphere can also affect our lives through the effects they have on satellites, communications, navigation, and power systems. Scientists are now studying space weather with a wide range of tools to try to learn more about the physical and chemical processes taking place in the upper atmosphere and beyond. One of these tools is GPS. The signals from the GPS satellites travel through the ionosphere on their way to receivers on or near Earth's surface. The free electrons populating this region of the atmosphere affect the propagation of the signals, changing their speed and direction of travel. By processing the data from a dual-frequency GPS receiver, it's actually possible to estimate just how many electrons were encountered by the signal along its travel path - the total electron content (TEC). TEC is the number of electrons in a column with a cross-sectional area of one square meter centered on the signal path. If a regional network of ground-based GPS receivers is used, then a map of TEC above the region can be constructed. The TEC normally varies smoothly from day to night as Earth's dayside atmosphere is ionized by the Sun's extreme ultraviolet radiation, while the nightside ionosphere electron content is reduced by chemical recombination. But the ionosphere can experience stormy weather just as the lower atmosphere does. Smooth variations in TEC are replaced by rapid fluctuations, and some regions experience significantly higher or lower TEC values than normal. In this month's column, we look at how GPS is being used to study such storms and how it is furthering our understanding of the Earth-Sun environment.
