[Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) A global and consistent characterization of land use and land change in urban and suburban environments is crucial for many fundamental social and natural science studies and applications. Presented here is a dense sampling method (DSM) that uses satellite scatterometer data to delineate urban and intraurban areas at a posting scale of about 1 km. DSM results are analyzed together with information on population and housing censuses, with Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) imagery, and with Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) night-light data. The analyses include Dallas-Fort Worth and Phoenix in the United States, Bogotá in Colombia, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Guangzhou in China, and Quito in Ecuador. Results show that scatterometer signatures correspond to buildings and infrastructures in urban and suburban environments. City extents detected by scatterometer data are significantly smaller than city light extents, but not all urban areas are detectable by the current SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite. Core commercial and industrial areas with high buildings and large factories are identified as high-backscatter centers. Data from DSM backscatter and DMSP nighttime lights have a good correlation with population density. However, the correlation relations from the two satellite datasets are different for different cities indicating that they contain complementary information. Together with night-light and census data, DSM and satellite scatterometer data provide new observations to study global urban and suburban environments and their changes. Furthermore, the capability of DSM to identify hydrological channels on the Greenland ice sheet and ecological biomes in central Africa demonstrates that DSM can be used to observe persistent structures in natural environments at a km scale, providing contemporaneous data to study human impacts beyond urban and suburban areas. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3D du bâtiRésumé : (Auteur) The advent of Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) technique provides a promising resource for three-dimensional building detection. Due to the difficulty of removing vegetation, most building detection methods fuse lidar data with multispectral images for vegetation indices and relatively few approaches use only lidar data. However, the fusing process may cause errors introduced by resolution and time difference, shadow and high-rise building displacement problems, and the geo-referencing process. This research presents a morphological building detecting method to identify buildings by gradually removing non-building pixels. First, a ground-filtering algorithm separates ground pixels with buildings, trees, and other objects. Then, an analytical approach removes the remaining non-building pixels using size, shape, height, building element structure, and the height difference between the first and last returns. The experimental results show that this method provides a comparative performance with an overall accuracy of 95.46 percent as in a study site in Austin urban area. [Termes IGN] variable régionaliséeRésumé : (Auteur) Difficulties exist in calculating watershed parameters from raster datasets over large regions because of the excessive computation time involved. A technique is presented which divides a large region into hydrologically distinct subregions, in each of which raster analyses are performed, in order to efficiently process large raster datasets. The results of raster analyses are stored as attributes on the resulting vector data. The vector data are then merged, and appropriate values accumulated to obtain regional parameter values for points of interest along the stream network. The technique, called Raster-Network Regionalization, uses the vector stream network as the backbone for the integration of subregions into a single region. A case study is presented which utilizes the technique to prepare geospatial inputs for the Water Rights Analysis Package simulation model. [Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a spectral analysis of several coastal land cover types in South Padre Island, Texas using AISA+ hyperspectral remote sensing data. AISA+ hyperspectral data (1.5 metre) were acquired throughout the area on 9 March 2005. Data over mangrove areas were converted to percent reflectance using four 88 metre reflectance tarps (4%, 16%, 32% and 48%) and empirical line calibration. These data were then compared to percent reflectance values of other terrestrial features to determine the ability of AISA+ data to distinguish features in coastal environments. Results suggest that these data may be appropriate to discriminate coastal mangrove vegetation and provide researchers with high resolution spatial and spectral information to more effectively manage coastal ecosystems. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Users of geographic information systems (GIS) usually render terrain using a point light source defined by an illumination vector. A terrain shaded from a single point provides good perceptual cues to surface orientation. This type of hill shading, however, does not include any visual cues to the relative height of surface elements. We propose shading the terrain under uniform diffuse illumination, where light arrives equally from all directions of a theoretical sky surrounding the terrain. Surface elements at lower elevations tend to have more of the sky obscured from view and are thus shaded darker. This tinting approach has the advantage that it provides more detailed renderings than point source illumination. We describe two techniques of computing terrain shading under uniform diffuse illumination. One technique uses a GIS-based hill-shading and shadowing tool to combine many point source renderings into one approximating the terrain under uniform diffuse illumination. The second technique uses a C++ computer algorithm for computing the inclination to the horizon in all azimuth directions at all points of the terrain. These virtual horizons are used to map sky brightness to the rendering of the terrain. To evaluate our techniques, we use two Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)-of the Schell Creek Range of eastern Nevada and a portion of downtown Houston, Texas, developed from Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) data. Renderings based on the uniform diffuse illumination model show more detailed changes in shading than renderings based on a point source illumination model.
