[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) Very little existing literature has addressed the issues of the perceived usefulness of 3D visualizations over 2D and the use of cartographic shadow representations in the planning community. Urban planning has moved toward a 3D, geographic-information-system-centric, and functional decision support framework. This study aims to examine the preferences of urban planning professionals with respect to 2D and 3D visualizations in a case study. The authors built a 3D representation of a proposed building along with the existing urban environment in Queenstown, New Zealand and conducted a usefulness test through a survey and interview. Based on the survey, the study evaluated the degree of task utility perceived in each visualization method, the effect on the mental image, and shadow representation preferences. The findings support the literature that the benefits of using a 2D or 3D model are closely related to the types of planning tasks undertaken. The findings also reveal a complex view of planning activities, suggesting that planners themselves cannot be treated as a single group for research purposes. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) Despite advances in remote sensing, retrieving surface properties at high resolutions in complex terrain is a major challenge. Slope and aspect as well as the topography surrounding a target impact surface insolation and lead to variability in calculated surface reflectance even for homogeneous land cover. Retrieval of surface reflectance is particularly problematic in case of topographic shading, where the total irradiation at the surface is a combination of diffuse irradiation and terrain-reflected irradiation from nearby slopes. To facilitate the retrieval of surface reflectance from high-resolution optical remote sensing, we have explored the feasibility of using a three dimensional radiative transfer code to simulate gridded surface irradiance for a View the MathML source∼37km2 area in the New Zealand Southern Alps. We have tested the sensitivity of simulated irradiance and calculated surface reflectance both in- and outside shaded areas to atmospheric aerosol content, surface albedo, atmospheric boundary layer structure and different solar spectra. Retrieved surface reflectance has been shown to be highly sensitive to atmospheric aerosols and surface albedo, particularly for areas shaded by topography. Not considering atmospheric aerosols in topographic correction can increase derived surface reflectance by well over 50%, while terrain-reflected irradiance can contribute 40% to surface reflectance in shaded areas, even for wider valleys. Both factors should therefore be considered in topographic correction of satellite imagery, even for relatively aerosol-free atmospheres and low surface albedo. Topographic correction for the whole scene was performed with the model settings resulting in the smallest RMSD between surface reflectivity in shaded and unshaded areas of similar land cover. Topographic correction based on 3D radiative transfer simulations has proven to effectively remove topographic effects and almost equalise derived mean reflectance in- and outside shaded areas. While the effective removal of shadows likely requires a higher dynamic range than Landsat’s ETM+ can offer, we suggest further evaluation of this approach in future studies at other sites and with other sensors. Rather than relying on simple information retrieval techniques, researchers are increasingly turning to the creative exploration and reapplication of data in order to more fully explore the meaning of newly available and diverse data sets. In this context, the cinema historian becomes the creator of visual texts which can be assessed for both their interpretive insight and their aesthetic qualities. This paper presents four research projects that use different spatio-temporal visualization techniques to understand the industrial dynamics of post-war film exhibition and distribution in Australia. The research integrates work by a group of inter-disciplinary investigators into the effectiveness of techniques such as dendritic mapping, Circos circular visualizations, animation, cartogram mapping, and multivariate visualization for the study of cinema circuits and operations at a number of scales. [Termes IGN] tempêteRésumé : (Auteur) We investigate daily and sub-daily non-tidal oceanic and atmospheric loading (NTOAL) in the Australian region and put an upper bound on potential site motion examining the effects of tropical cyclone Yasi that crossed the Australian coast in January/February 2011. The dynamic nature of the ocean is important, particularly for northern Australia where the long-term scatter due to daily and sub-daily oceanic changes increases by 20–55 % compared to that estimated using the inverted barometer (IB) assumption. Correcting the daily Global Positioning System (GPS) time series for NTOAL employing either a dynamic ocean model or the IB assumption leads to a reduction of up to 52 % in the weighted scatter of daily coordinate estimates. Differences between the approaches are obscured by seasonal variations in the GPS precision along the northern coast. Two compensating signals during the cyclone require modelling at high spatial and temporal resolution: uplift induced by the atmospheric depression, and subsidence induced by storm surge. The latter dominates ( > 135 %) the combined net effect that reaches a maximum of 14 mm, and 10 mm near the closest GPS site TOW2. Here, 96 % of the displacement is reached within 15 h due to the rapid transit of cyclones and the quasi-linear nature of the coastline. Consequently, estimating sub-daily NTOAL is necessary to properly account for such a signal that can be 3.5 times larger than its daily-averaged value. We were unable to detect the deformation signal in 2-hourly GPS processing and show that seasonal noise in the Austral summer dominates and precludes GPS detection of the cyclone-related subsidence.
