[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Most of the maps used today are what we call pan-scalar maps, i.e. interactive zoomable applications comprised of numerous maps of a particular area at different zoom levels (i.e. scales). We argue that such maps require a pan-scalar map design, which may differ significantly from established map design axioms and standards. This review is twofold. First, it reviews current practices in pan-scalar map design. Second, it summarizes and synthesizes literature about pan-scalar map design, as well as human-computer interaction (HCI) best practices for pan-scalar maps. The review of practices is based on a ScaleMaster analysis of the design of three popular pan-scalar maps: Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, and France's IGN Classic. Discussion centers on both stellar and subpar contemporary pan-scalar map design practices to help guide future practical pan-scalar designs and research on pan-scalar maps broadly. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) In order to design better pan-scalar maps, i.e. interactive, zoomable, multi-scale maps, we need to understand how they are perceived, understood, processed, manipulated by the users. This paper reports an experiment that uses an eye-tracker to analyse the gaze behaviour of users zooming and panning into a pan-scalar map. The gaze data from the experiment shows how people look at landmarks to locate the new map view after a zoom. We also identified different types of behaviours during a zoom when people stare at the mouse cursor, or during a pan where the gaze follows a landmark while the map translates. [Termes IGN] web mappingMots-clés libres : narrative mapping Résumé : (auteur) Modern web mapping techniques have enhanced the storytelling capability of cartography. In this paper, we present our recent development of a web mapping facility that can be used to extract interesting stories and unique insights from a diverse range of socio-economic and demographic variables and indicators, derived from a variety of datasets. We then use three curated narratives to show that online maps are effective ways of interactive storytelling and visualisation, which allow users to tailor their own story maps. We discuss the reasons for the revival of the recent attention to narrative mapping and conclude that our interactive web mapping facility powered by data assets can be employed as an accessible and powerful toolkit, to identify geographic patterns of various social and economic phenomena by social scientists, journalists, policymakers, and the public. [Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (auteur) High spatial resolution commercial satellite data provide new opportunities for terrestrial monitoring. The recent availability of near-daily 3 m observations provided by the PlanetScope constellation enables mapping of small and spatially fragmented burns that are not detected at coarser spatial resolution. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the potential for automated PlanetScope 3 m burned area mapping. The PlanetScope sensors have no onboard calibration or short-wave infrared bands, and have variable overpass times, making them challenging to use for large area, automated, burned area mapping. To help overcome these issues, a U-Net deep learning algorithm was developed to classify burned areas from two-date Planetscope 3 m image pairs acquired at the same location. The deep learning approach, unlike conventional burned area mapping algorithms, is applied to image spatial subsets and not to single pixels and so incorporates spatial as well as spectral information. Deep learning requires large amounts of training data. Consequently, transfer learning was undertaken using pre-existing Landsat-8 derived burned area reference data to train the U-Net that was then refined with a smaller set of PlanetScope training data. Results across Africa considering 659 PlanetScope radiometrically normalized image pairs sensed one day apart in 2019 are presented. The U-Net was first trained with different numbers of randomly selected 256 × 256 30 m pixel patches extracted from 92 pre-existing Landsat-8 burned area reference data sets defined for 2014 and 2015. The U-Net trained with 300,000 Landsat patches provided about 13% 30 m burn omission and commission errors with respect to 65,000 independent 30 m evaluation patches. The U-Net was then refined by training on 5,000 256 × 256 3 m patches extracted from independently interpreted PlanetScope burned area reference data. Qualitatively, the refined U-Net was able to more precisely delineate 3 m burn boundaries, including the interiors of unburned areas, and better classify “faint” burned areas indicative of low combustion completeness and/or sparse burns. The refined U-Net 3 m classification accuracy was assessed with respect to 20 independently interpreted PlanetScope burned area reference data sets, composed of 339.4 million 3 m pixels, with low 12.29% commission and 12.09% omission errors. The dependency of the U-Net classification accuracy on the burned area proportion within 3 m pixel 256 × 256 patches was also examined, and patches Numéro de notice : A2022-774 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2022.113203 Date de publication en ligne : 08/08/2022 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2022.113203 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101802

[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) “Why,” “what,” and “how” are basic questions to be answered in augmented map research as an intersecting direction. This study summarizes dynamic visual representations and true 3D interactions as characteristics of augmented maps from the cartographic perspective through analysis of the research progress in different disciplines. From secondary viewpoints of cognition and design, the augmented map cube is presented to establish the research framework in three directions: cognitive purposes, information dimensions, and interactive devices, in which map-based spatial cognition theory, augmented visualization, and interactive features are considered. The research evaluation is carried out to determine the reasonableness of the cube and then identify different research statuses in any one or two of the directions under the cube. Based on a literature search and classification, 30 typical studies were used for structural analysis to discover research trends and new directions that can be mined. The results show that the cube can be used to evaluate the coverage of an article or provide researchers with research trends and new possibilities. Our conclusions include but are not limited to the following: Research for retrieval purposes deserves attention, augmented visualization of specific individual elements is key to understanding maps, and interactive devices become more intangible.
