[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Map generalization is a complex task that sometimes requires human intervention. In order to support such a process on the fly, we propose a generalization approach based on self-generalizing objects (SGOs) that encapsulate geometric patterns (forms common to several cartographic features), generalization algorithms, and spatial integrity constraints. During a database enrichment process, an SGO is created and associated with a cartographic feature or a group of features. Each SGO created is then transformed into a software agent (SGO agent) in a multi-agent on-the-fly map-generalization system. SGO agents are equipped with behaviours that enable them to coordinate the generalization process. This article presents the concept of the SGO and two prototypes developed to support this approach: a prototype for the creation of SGOs and another for the on-the-fly map generalization (which uses the created SGOs). [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The automation of cartographic map production is still an important research field in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). With the increasing development of monitoring and decision-aid systems either on computer networks or wireless networks, efficient methods are needed to visualise geographical data while respecting some application constraints (accuracy, legibility, security, etc.). This paper introduces a B-spline snake model to deal with the current operators involved in the cartographic generalisation process of lines. This model enables us to perform those operators with a continuous approach. In order to avoid local conflicts such as intersections or self-intersections, the consistency of the lines is checked and discrete operations such as segment removal are performed during the process. We apply the method to map production in the highly constrained domain of maritime navigation systems. Experimental results of marine chart generalisation yield some discussions about generalisation robustness and quality. [Termes IGN] PostgreSQLRésumé : (Auteur) This paper discusses extensions of GAP-trees from three aspects and its implementation based on non-topological structure in order to enhance access to large vector data sets. First of all, we apply cartographic generalization rules to build a generalization procedure of the GAP-tree, which makes coarse representations more consistent with human cognition. Second, we replace the three-dimensional (pseudo-) Reactive-tree index with a 2D R-tree index and a B-tree index to improve the system efficiency. Finally, we compress a binary GAP-tree into multi-way GAP-trees in order to reduce data redundancy. The shallower multi-way GAP-trees not only eliminate redundant data but also accelerate the system's response time. The extensions have been successfully implemented in PostgreSQL. A test of Beijing's land-use data at the 1:10 000 scale demonstrates that the extended GAP-trees are efficient, compact, and easy to implement. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) An important aspect of a Dutch research project into usable (and well scaled) mobile maps for consumers is presented: the development of an appropriate field-based usability evaluation methodology for the prototype of a geo-mobile application that will be the result of a user centred design approach. Automatic generalisation, required for the user's orientation in space, but also for progressive data transfer, will be an important aspect of the prototype. What is reported here is an effective and technically unique user research methodology, based on a combination of video observation, thinking aloud and semi-structured interviewing. The experiments that have led to this outcome revealed some interesting usability issues that deserve further investigation.
