[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This thesis describes the significance of multiple representation for spatial data sets. Multiple representation denotes the provision of different representations for the same real world objects. In an overview the benefits of multiple representations are described, with a focus on multi-scale representations. The basic idea is to use this hierarchical scheme in order to ease analysis of phenomena and processes on an adequate level of detail. A prerequisite is, however, that the different representation do not exist separately, but are connected with each other, thus allowing a transition from one level to the next.
The way to generate, manage and use multiple representations differs for spatial representation formats. In the thesis, these issues are investigated for the important spatial data structures, namely image data, surfaces and vector data, as they are represented in Geographic information systems (GIS).
It is important to see that these representation forms should not be treated separately, but can be combined beneficially. Consider e.g. that images serve as data source for GIS. Furthermore, GIS-data are used as models for image interpretation. This mutual use can only be successful, when the models in the respective representations correspond and can be mutually transformed into each other.
The generation of different levels of detail is achieved using generalization methods. A prerequisite for the automatic generation in GIS and cartography is the availability of basic generalization operators. After a detailed description of the state of the art in generalization, three new methods are presented, that can be used for the following problems :
building generalization,
displacement,
typification.
Whereas the building generalization algorithm works locally, the approach for displacement is operates globally: all spatial conflicts in the data sets are solved in one step, without introducing new conflicts. Prerequisite is that other generalization operations have already been applied, and that only spatial conflicts remain to be solved. Thus allows for a continuous re-arrangement of the data set. In order to make larger scale transitions, discrete generalization methods are needed (e.g. removal of objects). An approach for typification solves the problem of reducing the amount of data, while preserving the spatial structure and density of the objects. The proposed algorithms serve as important tools for an integrated generalization system. An important feature of the algorithms is the possibility of self-diagnosis and quality measures.
Finally, an outline is given on the possibilities of an integrated multiple representation scheme for all spatial data types.

[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with researches in the field of automatic cartographic generalization. One difficulty to this automation resides in the needs of formalising cartographic knowledge to guide the application of generalization algorithms. This formalisation can be done by the means of rule bases. But the rule bases are not perfect. Cartographic generalization results needs an alteration process to correct errors. Our aim is to take advantage of this alteration process to improve rule bases. We define thus a method which analyses the alteration phase to detect an improve deficient rules from a base, in order to obtain generalization results as perfect as possible. In the field of artificial intelligence, this process is called revision. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper intends to introduce an original infrastructure based on multi-agents systems approach for automating the generalisation of the road network, a key issue for an efficient map. This takes place in the context of the European research project AGENT (ESPRIT 24939). It highlights the need for a multi-level analysis. It demonstrates how the multi-agent based infrastructure used meets the requirements of road network generalisation and illustrates with results the relevance of this approach. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Most research efforts on cartographic generalization have focussed on producing a map at a less detailed level than the input map or the input data. Only the final outcome is of interest. In this paper, we study how the changes made to a map during generalization can be visualized such that it looks smooth, that is, without sudden changes. This is necessary for continuous zooming during interactive mapping. We analyze the possibilities and identify various complications that arise.
