[Termes IGN] programmation par contraintesRésumé : (auteur) Cartographic generalization seeks to summarize geographical information from a geo-database to produce a less detailed and readable map. The specifications of a legible map are translated into a set of constraints to guide the generalization process and evaluate it. The global evaluation of the map, or of a part of it, consisting in aggregating all the single constraints satisfactions, is still to tackle for the generalization community. This paper deals with the use of the social welfare theory to handle the aggregation of the single satisfactions on the map level. The social welfare theory deals with the evaluation of the economical global welfare of a society, based on the individual welfare. Different social welfare orderings are adapted to generalization, compared and some are chosen for several generalization use cases. Experiments with topographic maps are carried out to validate the choices. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Improving the use of vector data in web mapping is often shown as an important challenge. Such shift from raster to vector web maps would open web mapping and GIS to new innovations and new practices. The main obstacle is a performance issue: Vector web maps in nowadays web mapping environments are usually too slow and not usable. Existing techniques for vector web mapping cannot solve alone the performance issue. This article describes a unified framework where some of these techniques are integrated in order to build efficient vector web mapping clients and servers. This framework is composed of the following elements: Specific formats for vector data and symbology, vector tiling, spatial index services, and generalization for multi-scale data. A prototype based on this framework has been implemented and has shown satisfying results. Some principles for future standards to support the development of vector web mapping are given. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : automated generalisation rule revision trial and error strategy Résumé : (auteur) Automating the generalisation process, a major issue for national mapping agencies, is extremely complex. Several works have proposed to deal with this complexity using a trial and error strategy. The performance of systems based on such a strategy is directly dependent on the quality of the control knowledge (i.e. heuristics) used to guide the trials. Unfortunately, most of the time, the definition and updation of knowledge is a fastidious task. In this context, automatic knowledge revision can not only improve the performance of the generalisation, but also allow it to automatically adapt to various usages and evolve when new elements are introduced. In this article, an offline knowledge revision approach is proposed, based on a logging of the system and on the analysis of outcoming logs. This approach is dedicated to the revision of control knowledge expressed by production rules. We have implemented and tested this approach for the automated generalisation of groups of buildings within a generalisation model called AGENT, from initial data that reference a scale of approximately 1:15,000 compared with the target map's scale of 1:50,000. The results show that our approach improves the quality of the control knowledge and thus the performance of the system. Moreover, the approach proposed is generic and can be applied to other systems based on a trial and error strategy, dedicated to generalisation or not. [Termes IGN] généralisation cartographique automatiséeRésumé : (Auteur) Les cartes en ligne pourraient être améliorées par l'utilisation des méthodes de cartographie numérique existantes, en particulier de généralisation automatique. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Maps are not like other images. Internet maps could be improved through the use of automated mapping methods, particularly automated generalization techniques. Operational automated generalization systems exist, but they are not used on the Web. Integrating generalization and Web-mapping systems is an important challenge for Internet cartography; this integration requires that the architecture of existing Web-mapping systems be improved. This article gives some recommendations to progress toward this integration: spatial data servers should diffuse more vector data and fewer pre-computed raster tiles; they should be made “scale aware” and should provide multi-scale data; the generalization transformations should be shared between servers and clients; and Web-mapping clients should be able to compute dynamic graphic generalizations to adapt the spatial data display to the user's needs.
