[Termes IGN] symbole graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper extends European research on generating cartographic base maps at multiple scales from a single detailed database. Similar to the European work, we emphasize reference maps. In contrast to the Europeans' focus on data generalization, we emphasize changes to the map display, including symbol design or symbol modification. We also work from databases compiled at multiple resolutions rather than constructing all representations from a single high-resolution database. We report results demonstrating how symbol change combined with selection and elimination of subsets of features can produce maps through almost the entire range of map scales spanning 1:10,000 to 1:5,000,000. We demonstrate a method of establishing specific map display scales at which symbol modification should be imposed. We present a prototype decision tool called ScaleMaster that can guide multi-scale map design across a small or large range of data resolutions, display scales, and map purposes. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Editeur) Users have come to expect instant access to up-to-date geographical information, with global coverage-presented at widely varying levels of detail, as digital and paper products; customisable data that can readily combined with other geographic information. These requirements present an immense challenge to those supporting the delivery of such services (National Mapping Agencies (NMA), Government Departments, and private business. Generalisation of Geographic Information : Cartographic Modelling and Applications provides detailed review of state of the art technologies associated with these challenges, including the most recent developments in cartometric analysis techniques able to support high levels of automation among multi scale derivation techniques.
The book illustrates the application of these ideas within existing and emerging technologies. In addition to providing a comprehensive theoretical underpinning, the book demonstrates how theoretical developments have translated into commercial systems deployed within NMAs.
The book explores relevance of open systems in support of collaborative research and open source web based map services.Note de contenu : Preface.

Note de contenu : Introduction

[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] In most GIS softwares, geographical data are often stored and managed using a set of independent layers. Many important relationships existing between objects of these layers are not explicit and can therefore be broken by some treatments on the data (such as generalisation) and create inconsistencies. In this paper, we focus on the relationship existing between relief and hydrographic network. This relationship is particularly important: in the real world, the hydrographic network flows down on the relief. Many rivers are located inside deep thalwegs, which have been hollowed out by the rivers themselves. The geographic data representing the relief and the hydrographic network should therefore respect this outflow relationship. This relationship is sometimes not respected in geographic datasets. A cause of this inconstancy is that the elevation and hydrographic data are often collected separately (with different acquisition processes and levels of detail) without taking into account this relationship. An other cause is the use of some treatments on either the relief or the hydrographic network or even both, which can alter the outflow relationship. For example, in map generalisation, hydrographic sections are often displaced in order to avoid an overlapping with other objects, such as a road parallel to a river. As a consequence, the outflow relationship between hydrographic sections and the relief can be broken. Our goal is to give a method to correct these inconsistencies Numéro de notice : C2007-052 Affiliation des auteurs : COGIT (1988-2011) Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Communication nature-HAL : ComAvecCL&ActesPubliésIntl DOI : sans En ligne : https://icaci.org/files/documents/ICC_proceedings/ICC2007/documents/doc/THEME%20 [...]
