[Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) With a focus on mobile and web mapping, we propose several algorithms for on-the-fly generalization of point data, such as points of interest (POIs) or large point collections. In order to achieve real-time performance, we use a quadtree data structure. With their hierarchical subdivision structure and progressive levels of detail, indices of the quadtree family lend themselves as auxiliary data structures to support algorithms for generalization operations, including selection, simplification, aggregation, and displacement of point data. The spatial index can further be used to generate several local and global measures that can then serve to make educated guesses on the density and proximity of points across map scales, and thus enable control of the operation of the generalization algorithms. An implementation of the proposed algorithms has shown that, and thanks to the quadtree index, real-time performance can be achieved even for large point sets. Furthermore, the quadtree data structure can be extended into a caching structure, which can be used to store pre-computed generalizations; thus, a desired level of detail (LOD) can simply be retrieved from cache. [Termes IGN] réductionRésumé : (Auteur) Map mashups are often visually chaotic and methods for solving this chaos are required. We introduce a set of clutter reduction criteria for evaluating methods to reduce clutter in map mashups. We present a synthesis of cartographic generalisation operators for point data and clutter reduction methods used in information visualisation and evaluate the methods against the criteria. The resulting evaluation table can be used in finding suitable clutter reduction methods for cases of map mashups with different primary criteria, and more specifically in finding methods that cover each others’ limitations. [Termes IGN] simplification de contourRésumé : (Auteur) Traditionally schematised maps make extensive use of curves. However, automated methods for schematisation are mostly restricted to straight lines. We present a generic framework for topology-preserving curved schematisation that allows a choice of quality measures and curve types. The framework fits a curve to every part of the input. It uses Voronoi diagrams to ensure that curves fitted to disjoint parts do not intersect. The framework then employs a dynamic program to find an optimal schematisation using the fitted curves. Our fully-automated approach does not need critical points or salient features. We illustrate our framework with Bézier curves and circular arcs. [Termes IGN] module d'extensionRésumé : (Auteur) Little by little, co-existing geographical data sets are integrated into multi-representation databases, where the data sets represent different level of detail, or different point of views for the same geographical features. The ScaleMaster model makes it possible to formalize how to choose the features to map from the different data sets. The paper proposes an extension of the ScaleMaster model that drives automatic generalization rather than guidelines for manual mapmaking. The ScaleMaster 2.0 has been implemented and is tested for use with real data.
