[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic placement of text corresponding to graphical objects is an important issue in several applications such as geographical information systems (GIS), cartography, and graph drawing. We focus on realistic data and present a hybrid algorithm for labeling both line and point features. The first step of the method works on the discretized map and uses tools from morphological image processing. It leads to an initial placement of all labels in allowed (i.e., non-overlapping) position. The second step works on the continuous map and uses a force-directed iterative algorithm to improve this initial placement. In a comprehensive study on realistic data sets the strengths of the method (e.g., its flexibility and simple implementation) as well as its limitations (e.g., on dense maps the force-based method is only capable of small adjustments) are discussed. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method of combining text and icon label placement in a real-time computing environment. The method computes label configurations based on placement properties, cartographic disturbance, and label overlap. The process is divided into four phases. In the first phase, candidate positions of the text labels are chosen. In the second phase, the same is done for the icon labels. The choice of candidate positions is based on cartographic preference and cartographic disturbance. The removal of overlap between labels is solved, in the third phase, by means of a combinatorial optimization technique (simulated annealing). When there are label pairs in conflict that could not be resolved, the fourth and final step is executed to remove one label in the pair. The success of the proposed method lies in the ability to effectively reduce the search space for the combinatorial optimization. A number of strategies for reducing search space have been evaluated in a case study. The results show that a good search-space-reduction strategy will lead to acceptable solutions for text and icon labeling within a limited processing time. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the use of the stochastic optimization technique of simulated annealing for map generalization. An algorithm is presented that performs operations of displacement, size exaggeration, deletion and size reduction of multiple map objects in order to resolve graphic conflict resulting from map scale reduction. It adopts a trial position approach in which each of n discrete polygonal objects is assigned k candidate trial positions that represent the original, displaced, size exaggerated, deleted and size reduced states of the object. This gives rise to a possible kn distinct map configurations; the expectation is that some of these configurations will contain reduced levels of graphic conflict. Finding the configuration with least conflict by means of an exhaustive search is, however, not practical for realistic values of n and k. We show that evaluation of a subset of the configurations, using simulated annealing, can result in effective resolution of graphic conflict. [Termes IGN] placement automatique des écrituresRésumé : (Auteur) The cartographic labelling problem is the problem of placing text on a map. This includes the positioning of the labels, and determining the shape in the case of line and area feature labels. There are many rules and customs that describe aspects of good label placement, like readability and clear association. This paper gives a classification of most label placement rules, and formalizes them into a function that can serve as a quality measure for label placement. If such a function is implemented, it allows comparison of the output of different label placement programs. We give a simple and a more refined example of the quality function.
