[Termes IGN] véhicule automobileRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new method for the automatic detection of cars in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images acquired over urban contexts. UAV images are characterized by an extremely high spatial resolution, which makes the detection of cars particularly challenging. The proposed method starts with a screening operation in which the asphalted areas are identified in order to make the car detection process faster and more robust. Subsequently, filtering operations in the horizontal and vertical directions are performed to extract histogram-of-gradient features and to yield a preliminary detection of cars after the computation of a similarity measure with a catalog of cars used as reference. Three different strategies for computing the similarity are investigated. Successively, for the image points identified as potential cars, an orientation value is computed by searching for the highest similarity value in 36 possible directions. The last step is devoted to the merging of the points which belong to the same car because it is likely that a car is identified by more than one point due to the extremely high resolution of UAV images. As outcomes, the proposed method provides the number of cars in the image, as well as the position and orientation for each of them. Interesting experimental results, conducted on a set of real UAV images acquired over an urban area, are presented and discussed. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (auteur) Fuel type mapping of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) in support of fire spread simulation modelling should include both natural and urban features. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of (1) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) structural data, (2) ortho-image data and (3) a combination of both as input to an object-based classification approach for mapping fuels within two WUI areas in San Diego, California. A separability analysis was utilized to determine the surface topographical and spectral layers most influential for discriminating WUI fuels. An accuracy assessment revealed that the combination of LiDAR and ortho-image data inputs substantially increased classification accuracy by 20–30% and achieved overall accuracies > 80%. Results from the study provide knowledge on how reliable fuel types within the WUI can be mapped using high-resolution LiDAR and ortho-image data while presenting new insights into fuel type mapping. This paper proposed a method of land cover classification with finer resolution remote sensing data integrating temporal features extracted from time series coarser resolution data. The coarser resolution vegetation index data is first fused with finer resolution data to obtain time series finer resolution data. Temporal features are extracted from the fused data and added to improve classification accuracy. The result indicates that temporal features extracted from coarser resolution data have significant effect on improving classification accuracy of finer resolution data, especially for vegetation types. The overall classification accuracy is significantly improved approximately 4% from 90.4% to 94.6% and 89.0% to 93.7% for using Landsat 8 and Landsat 5 data, respectively. The user and producer accuracies for all land cover types have been improved. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Let S be a set of n points in a fixed axis-parallel rectangle R Í R2 , i.e. in the two-dimensional space (2D). Assuming that those points are stored in an R-tree, this paper presents several algorithms for finding the empty rectangle in R with the largest area, sides parallel to the axes of the space, and containing only a query point q. This point can not be part of S, that is, it is not stored in the R-tree. All algorithms follow the basic idea of discarding part of the points of S, in such a way that the problem can be solved only considering the remaining points. As a consequence, the algorithms only have to access a very small portion of the nodes (disk blocks) of the R-tree, saving main memory resources and computation time. We provide formal proofs of the correctness of our algorithms and, in order to evaluate the performance of the algorithms, we run an extensive set of experiments using synthetic and real data. The results have demonstrated the efficiency and scalability of our algorithms for different dataset configurations. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) High spatial resolution and spectral fidelity are basic standards for evaluating an image fusion algorithm. Numerous fusion methods for remote sensing images have been developed. Some of these methods are based on the intensity–hue–saturation (IHS) transform and the generalized IHS (GIHS), which may cause serious spectral distortion. Spectral distortion in the GIHS is proven to result from changes in saturation during fusion. Therefore, reducing such changes can achieve high spectral fidelity. A GIHS-based spectral preservation fusion method that can theoretically reduce spectral distortion is proposed in this study. The proposed algorithm consists of two steps. The first step is spectral modulation (SM), which uses the Gaussian function to extract spatial details and conduct SM of multispectral (MS) images. This method yields a desirable visual effect without requiring histogram matching between the panchromatic image and the intensity of the MS image. The second step uses the Gaussian convolution function to restore lost edge details during SM. The proposed method is proven effective and shown to provide better results compared with other GIHS-based methods.
