[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we describe the evaluation of a method for building detection by the Dempster–Shafer fusion of airborne laser scanner (ALS) data and multi-spectral images. For this purpose, ground truth was digitised for two test sites with quite different characteristics. Using these data sets, the heuristic models for the probability mass assignments are validated and improved, and rules for tuning the parameters are discussed. The sensitivity of the results to the most important control parameters of the method is assessed. Further we evaluate the contributions of the individual cues used in the classification process to determine the quality of the results. Applying our method with a standard set of parameters on two different ALS data sets with a spacing of about 1 point/m2, 95% of all buildings larger than 70 m2 could be detected and 95% of all detected buildings larger than 70 m2 were correct in both cases. Buildings smaller than 30 m2 could not be detected. The parameters used in the method have to be appropriately defined, but all except one (which must be determined in a training phase) can be determined from meaningful physical entities. Our research also shows that adding the multi-spectral images to the classification process improves the correctness of the results for small residential buildings by up to 20%. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) A method is described for integrating panchromatic (P) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features into multispectral (XS) images using conjointly the modified Brovey transform (MBT) and the 'à trous' wavelet decomposition (ATDW). The MBT is based on the local modulation of each multispectral image by the ratio of the new and initial intensity components to produce new multispectral images directly. The ATWD allows extraction of features from P and SAR images, which are combined through a feature selection rule to integrate into the initial intensity component. For evaluating the effect of each feature selection on new XS images, experimental results are conducted on SPOT (XS, P) and Radarsat (SAR) images using both visual inspection and many refined statistical measures. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) An operational processing system is described for the automated retrieval of cloud-top heights (CTHs) and amounts from the Gridded Brightness Temperature (GBT) 1 km product derived from the dual view of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR-2) instrument onboard the ESA ERS-2 satellite. A new stereo matching algorithm, called M4 is described together with the overall processing chain for retrieving cloud-top heights and amounts. M4 is based on the successful stereo matchers, M2 and M3 which have been in operation with the NASA MISR sensor since March 2000 and which have also been applied to mapping cloud fraction in the polar region using ATSR-2 (Cawkwell and Bamber 2002, Cawkwell et al. 2001). Results in companion papers (Naud et al., Denis et al. 2007) describe the accuracy achieved using this algorithm and detailed scene-by-scene results are available from http://cloudmap.org under results->UCL->ATSR-2 Validation. We assess the impact of cloud-top winds on the accuracy of the retrieved cloud-top heights and conclude that for most middle and lower tropospheric clouds, cloud-top winds will have little, if any, noticeable impact. We show how ATSR-2 cloud-top heights at the different wavelengths (particularly visible compared with thermal IR) can sometimes yield information on multi-layer clouds which is unique to ATSR-2. The processing system has recently been applied to three years of ASTR-2 GBT data and results are shown. These results are available from the British Atmospheric Data Centre. [Termes IGN] spatial metricsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper aims to present a new approach for automatic extraction of building footprints in a combination of the IKONOS imagery with pan-sharpened multi-spectral bands and the low-sampled (not, vert, similar 0.1 points/m2) airborne laser scanning data acquired from the Optech's 1020 ALTM (Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper). Initially, a laser point cluster in 3D object space was recognized as an isolated building object if all the member points were similarly attributed as building points by investigating the height property of laser points and the normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI) driven from IKONOS imagery. As modelling cues, rectilinear lines around building outlines collected by either data-driven or model-driven manner were integrated in order to compensate the weakness of both methods. Finally, a full description of building outlines was accomplished by merging convex polygons, which were obtained as a building region was hierarchically divided by the extracted lines using the Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) tree. The system performance was evaluated by objective evaluation metrics in comparison to the Ordnance Survey's MasterMap®. This evaluation showed the delineation performance of up to 0.11 (the branching factor) and the detection percentage of 90.1% (the correctness) and the overall quality of 80.5%. GIS technology has the ability to successfully incorporate the vast amounts of visual data and geospatial information produced by various sensors and imaging systems currently deployed in defense applications. However, it is not just data assimilation practicality that has put GIS 'on the map' for the defense intelligence community, but its potential for rapid data integration, analysis and distribution of complex spatial information.
