[Termes IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (auteur) Modelling and visualization of three-dimensional (3D) models for cities is a great challenge for computer software and graphics. Recently, 3D city modelling has grown due to advances in applications accompanying the information technology revolution. 3D Geographic Information Systems (3D-GIS) have evolved enormously due to the availability of large-scale 3D modelling techniques. These technologies have become very important in representing large cities and conducting various analyses in the city’s virtual environment to support urban decision-making. CityEngine is one of the most recent 3D-GIS modelling applications. CityEngine can be described as parametric modelling using Procedural Modelling (PM) to create 3D urban elements through macros and routines. This paper highlights the importance of 3D Procedural Modelling (PM) of cities in the GIS environment using ESRI CityEngine and presents a parametric concept for designing urban spaces. This issue has been addressed in three respects. First, discuss the concept and strength of parametric design. Second, the concept of procedural modelling and its power to generate complex 3D models using a set of rules is discussed. Finally, CityEngine was evaluated through a real-world case study of a neighbourhood in the new city of Beni-Suef, Egypt. The results confirm the effectiveness of CityEngine as a 3D-GIS modelling software that generates dynamic 3D models from 2D spatial data. While the results are promising, it is important to investigate more complex cases. The CityEngine modelling approach enables comprehensive urban analyses such as sequence vision, façade studies, urban fabric and character, and statistical operations based on attribute database. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) We present a new method to create spatial data using a generative adversarial network (GAN). Our contribution uses coarse and widely available geospatial data to create maps of less available features at the finer scale in the built environment, bypassing their traditional acquisition techniques (e.g. satellite imagery or land surveying). In the work, we employ land use data and road networks as input to generate building footprints and conduct experiments in 9 cities around the world. The method, which we implement in a tool we release openly, enables the translation of one geospatial dataset to another with high fidelity and morphological accuracy. It may be especially useful in locations missing detailed and high-resolution data and those that are mapped with uncertain or heterogeneous quality, such as much of OpenStreetMap. The quality of the results is influenced by the urban form and scale. In most cases, the experiments suggest promising performance as the method tends to truthfully indicate the locations, amount, and shape of buildings. The work has the potential to support several applications, such as energy, climate, and urban morphology studies in areas previously lacking required data or inpainting geospatial data in regions with incomplete data. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Deep learning techniques have recently been experimented for map generalization. Although promising, these experiments raise new problems regarding the evaluation of the output images. Traditional map generalization evaluation cannot directly be applied to the results in a raster format. Additionally, the internal evaluation used by deep learning models is mostly based on the realism of images and the accuracy of pixels, and none of these criteria is sufficient to evaluate a generalization process. Finally, deep learning processes tend to hide the causal mechanisms and do not always guarantee a result that follows cartographic principles. In this article, we propose a method to adapt constraint-based evaluation to the images generated by deep learning models. We focus on the use case of mountain road generalization, and detail seven raster-based constraints, namely, clutter, coalescence reduction, smoothness, position preservation, road connectivity preservation, noise absence, and color realism constraints. These constraints can contribute to current studies on deep learning-based map generalization, as they can help guide the learning process, compare different models, validate these models, and identify remaining problems in the output images. They can also be used to assess the quality of training examples. [Termes IGN] Wuhan (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) Detecting interchanges in road networks benefit many applications, such as vehicle navigation and map generalization. Traditional approaches use manually defined rules based on geometric, topological, or both properties, and thus can present challenges for structurally complex interchange. To overcome this drawback, we propose a graph-based deep learning approach for interchange detection. First, we model the road network as a graph in which the nodes represent road segments, and the edges represent their connections. The proposed approach computes the shape measures and contextual properties of individual road segments for features characterizing the associated nodes in the graph. Next, a semi-supervised approach uses these features and limited labeled interchanges to train a graph convolutional network that classifies these road segments into an interchange and non-interchange segments. Finally, an adaptive clustering approach groups the detected interchange segments into interchanges. Our experiment with the road networks of Beijing and Wuhan achieved a classification accuracy >95% at a label rate of 10%. Moreover, the interchange detection precision and recall were 79.6 and 75.7% on the Beijing dataset and 80.6 and 74.8% on the Wuhan dataset, respectively, which were 18.3–36.1 and 17.4–19.4% higher than those of the existing approaches based on characteristic node clustering. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) Transportation infrastructure, such as road or railroad networks, represent a fundamental component of our civilization. For sustainable planning and informed decision making, a thorough understanding of the long-term evolution of transportation infrastructure such as road networks is crucial. However, spatially explicit, multi-temporal road network data covering large spatial extents are scarce and rarely available prior to the 2000s. Herein, we propose a framework that employs increasingly available scanned and georeferenced historical map series to reconstruct past road networks, by integrating abundant, contemporary road network data and color information extracted from historical maps. Specifically, our method uses contemporary road segments as analytical units and extracts historical roads by inferring their existence in historical map series based on image processing and clustering techniques. We tested our method on over 300,000 road segments representing more than 50,000 km of the road network in the United States, extending across three study areas that cover 42 historical topographic map sheets dated between 1890 and 1950. We evaluated our approach by comparison to other historical datasets and against manually created reference data, achieving F-1 scores of up to 0.95, and showed that the extracted road network statistics are highly plausible over time, i.e., following general growth patterns. We demonstrated that contemporary geospatial data integrated with information extracted from historical map series open up new avenues for the quantitative analysis of long-term urbanization processes and landscape changes far beyond the era of operational remote sensing and digital cartography.
