[Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (auteur) Snow is a key parameter for global climate and hydrological systems. Global Navigation Satellite System interferometric reflectometry (GNSS-IR) has been applied to accurately monitor snow height (SH) with low cost and high temporal–spatial resolution. We proposed an improved GNSS-IR method using detrended signal-to-noise ratio (δSNR) arcs corresponding to multipath reflection tracks with different azimuths. After using wavelet decomposition and random sample consensus, noise with various frequencies for SNR arcs and outliers of reflector height (RH) estimations have been sequentially mitigated to enhance the availability of the proposed method. Thus, a height datum based on the ground RHs retrieved from multi-GNSS SNR data is established to compensate for the influence of topography variation with different azimuths in SH retrieval. The approximately 3-month δSNR datasets collected from three stations deployed on sloping topography were used to retrieve SH and compared with the existing method and in situ measurements. The results show that the root mean square errors of the retrievals derived from the proposed method for the three sites are between 4 and 8 cm, and the corresponding correlation surpasses 0.95 when compared to the reference SH datasets. Additionally, we compare the performance of a retrieval with the existing GNSS-IR Web App, and it shows an improvement in RMSE of about 7 cm. Furthermore, because topography variation has been considered, the average correction of SH retrievals is between 2 and 4 cm. The solution with the proposed method helps develop the applications of the GNSS-IR technique on complex topography. [Termes IGN] pouvoir de résolution radiométriqueRésumé : (auteur) Soot deposition from wildfires decreases snow and ice albedo and increases the absorption of shortwave radiation, which advances and accelerates melt. Soot deposition also induces algal growth, which further decreases snow and ice albedo. In recent years, increasingly severe and widespread wildfire activity has occurred in western Canada in association with climate change. In the summers of 2017 and 2018, westerly winds transported smoke from extensive record-breaking wildfires in British Columbia eastward to the Canadian Rockies, where substantial amounts of soot were deposited on high mountain glaciers, snowfields, and icefields. Several studies have addressed the problem of soot deposition on snow and ice, but the spatiotemporal resolution applied has not been compatible with studying mountain icefields that are extensive but contain substantial internal variability and have dynamical albedos. This study evaluates spatial patterns in the albedo decrease and net shortwave radiation (K*) increase caused by soot from intense wildfires in Western Canada deposited on the Columbia Icefield (151 km2), Canadian Rockies, during 2017 and 2018. Twelve Sentinel-2 images were used to generate high spatial resolution albedo retrievals during four summers (2017 to 2020) using a MODIS bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model, which was employed to model the snow and ice reflectance anisotropy. Remote sensing estimates were evaluated using site-measured albedo on the icefield's Athabasca Glacier tongue, resulting in a R2, mean bias, and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.68, 0.019, and 0.026, respectively. The biggest inter-annual spatially averaged soot-induced albedo declines were of 0.148 and 0.050 (2018 to 2020) for southeast-facing glaciers and the snow plateau, respectively. The highest inter-annual spatially-averaged soot-induced shortwave radiative forcing was 203 W/m2 for southeast-facing glaciers (2018 to 2020) and 106 W/m2 for the snow plateau (2017 to 2020). These findings indicate that snow albedo responded rapidly to and recovered rapidly from soot deposition. However, ice albedo remained low the year after fire, and this was likely related to a bio-albedo feedback involving microorganisms. Snow and ice K* were highest during low albedo years, especially for south-facing glaciers. These large-scale effects accelerated melt of the Columbia Icefield. The findings highlight the importance of using large-area high spatial resolution albedo estimates to analyze the effect of wildfire soot deposition on snow and ice albedo and K* on icefields, which is not possible using other approaches. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) The impact of ongoing climate change on plant communities varies according to vegetation type and location across the globe. Snowbed flora count among the most sensitive vegetation due to their dependence on long-lasting snow patches. This is especially the case toward their rear distribution edge, where warming has already induced a marked decrease in snow deposition. Thus, analysing the dynamics of snowbed plant communities is crucial for understanding the ecological processes that condition their persistence under new environmental conditions. The Pyrenees represent the southern distribution limit of several eurosiberian snowbed species. We surveyed eight snowbeds based on permanent plots, where the presence of each taxon was recorded annually between 2012 and 2019. We analysed vegetation patterns between sites and plots, related them to environmental gradients, and assessed temporal trends of community dynamics. We detected important between-site differences regarding species composition. However, these differences were not supported by species' biogeographical patterns, which suggests that local abiotic factors filter species with distinct autecology. In parallel, temporal community turnover was observed through the expansion of widespread grassland species, which supports the hypothesis of colonisation of snowbeds by common alpine taxa. Such changes could be related to a decrease in snow cover over recent times, which releases extreme environmental constraints to plant growth. Therefore, it is crucial to characterise fine-scale ecological conditions to forecast plant community dynamics and provide reliable information for conserving snowbed vegetation across the Palearctic. [Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (Auteur) More accurate snow quality predictions are needed to economically and socially support communities in a changing Arctic environment. This contrasts with the current availability of affordable and efficient snow monitoring methods. In this study, a novel approach is presented to determine spatial snow depth distribution in challenging alpine terrain that was tested during a field campaign performed in the Tarfala valley, Kebnekaise mountains, northern Sweden, in April 2019. The combination of a multispectral camera and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used to derive three-dimensional (3D) snow surface models via Structure from Motion (SfM) with direct georeferencing. The main advantage over conventional photogrammetric surveys is the utilization of accurate Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning which enables direct georeferencing of the images, and therefore eliminates the need for ground control points. The proposed method is capable of producing high-resolution 3D snow-covered surface models (7 cm/pixel) of alpine areas up to eight hectares in a fast, reliable and affordable way. The test sites’ average snow depth was 160 cm with an average standard deviation of 78 cm. The overall Root-Mean-Square Errors (RMSE) of the snow depth range from 11.52 cm for data acquired in ideal surveying conditions to 41.03 cm in aggravated light and wind conditions. Results of this study suggest that the red components in the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., the red, red edge, and near-infrared (NIR) band, contain the majority of information used in photogrammetric processing. The experiments highlighted a significant influence of the multi-spectral imagery on the quality of the final snow depth estimation as well as a strong potential to reduce processing times and computational resources by limiting the dimensionality of the imagery through the application of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) before the photogrammetric 3D reconstruction. The proposed method is part of closing the scale gap between discrete point measurements and regional-scale remote sensing and complements large-scale remote sensing data and snow model output with an adequate validation source. [Termes IGN] toundraRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing of snow is a method to measure snow cover characteristics without direct physical contact with the target from airborne or space-borne platforms. Reliable estimates of snow cover extent and snow properties are vital for several applications including climate change research and weather and hydrological forecasting. Optical remote sensing methods detect the extent of snow cover based on its high reflectivity compared to other natural surfaces. A universal challenge for snow cover mapping is the high spatiotemporal variability of snow properties and heterogeneous landscapes such as the boreal forest biome. The optical satellite sensor’s footprint may extend from tens of meters to a kilometer; the signal measured by the sensor can simultaneously emerge from several target categories within individual satellite pixels. By use of spectral unmixing or inverse model-based methods, the fractional snow cover (FSC) within the satellite image pixel can be resolved from the recorded electromagnetic signal. However, these algorithms require knowledge of the spectral reflectance properties of the targets present within the satellite scene and the accuracy of snow cover maps is dependent on the feasibility of these spectral model parameters. On the other hand, abrupt changes in land cover types with large differences in their snow properties may be located within a single satellite image pixel and complicate the interpretation of the observations. Ground-based in-situ observations can be used to validate the snow parameters derived by indirect methods, but these data are affected by the chosen sampling. This doctoral thesis analyses laboratory-based spectral reflectance information on several boreal snow types for the purpose of the more accurate reflectance representation of snow in mapping method used for the detection of fractional snow cover. Multi-scale reflectance observations representing boreal spectral endmembers typically used in optical mapping of snow cover, are exploited in the thesis. In addition, to support the interpretation of remote sensing observations in boreal and tundra environments, extensive in-situ dataset of snow depth, snow water equivalent and snow density are exploited to characterize the snow variability and to assess the uncertainty and representativeness of these point-wise snow measurements applied for the validation of remote sensing observations. The overall goal is to advance knowledge about the spectral endmembers present in boreal landscape to improve the accuracy of the FSC estimates derived from the remote sensing observations and support better interpretation and validation of remote sensing observations over these heterogeneous landscapes. The main outcome from the work is that laboratory-controlled experiments that exclude disturbing factors present in field circumstances may provide more accurate representation of wet (melting) snow endmember reflectance for the FSC mapping method. The behavior of snow band reflectance is found to be insensitive to width and location differences between visible satellite sensor bands utilized in optical snow cover mapping which facilitates the use of various sensors for the construction of historical data records. The results also reveal the high deviation of snow reflectance due to heterogeneity in snow macro- and microstructural properties. The quantitative statistics of bulk snow properties show that areal averages derived from in-situ measurements and used to validate remote sensing observations are dependent on the measurement spacing and sample size especially over land covers with high absolute snow depth variability, such as barren lands in tundra. Applying similar sampling protocol (sample spacing and sample size) over boreal and tundra land cover types that represent very different snow characteristics will yield to non-equal representativeness of the areal mean values. The extensive datasets collected for this work demonstrate that observations measured at various scales can provide different view angle to the same challenge but at the same time any dataset individually cannot provide a full understanding of the target complexity. This work and the collected datasets directly facilitate further investigation of uncertainty in fractional snow cover maps retrieved by optical remote sensing and the interpretation of satellite observations in boreal and tundra landscapes.
