[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The environmental satellite (ENVISAT) advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) offers the opportunity for monitoring snow parameters with dual polarization and multi-incidence angle. Snow wetness is an important index for indicating snow avalanche, snowmelt runoff modelling, water supply for irrigation and hydropower stations, weather forecasts and understanding climate change. We used a first-order scattering model that includes both volume and air/snow surface scattering based on a developed inversion model to estimate snow dielectric constant, which can be further related for estimating snow wetness. Comparison with field measurement showed that the correlation coefficient for snow permittivity estimated from ASAR data was observed to be 0.8 at 95% confidence interval and model bias was observed as 2.42% by volume at 95% confidence interval. The comparison of ASAR-derived snow permittivity with ground measurements shows the average absolute error 2.5%. The snow wetness range varies from 0 to 15% by volume. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Editeur) Starlab Barcelona is the developer of Oceanpal, a fully operational GNSS-R system for water-oriented services (see Figure 1). This article provides a brief description of this instrument and the range of water applications it offers: sea state monitoring and sea level monitoring, as well as inland water (i.e. lake) applications. Moreover, recent research has evidenced the applicability of this instrument for soil moisture related applications and measurement of land bio-geophysical parameters. [extrait] The fundamentals behind this concept are to use not only the direct GNSS signals coming from the transmitting satellites, but also to process the same GNSS signals reflected from the Earth's surface (see Figure 2 for the on-ground case). The direct and reflected signals are compared in order to extract some relevant geophysical information, especially related to water surface (inland or sea). In order to exploit this concept, a GNSS-R instrument (Oceanpal in particular) features a zenith-looking antenna that gathers the direct signal, and a nadir-looking antenna that collects the reflected signal. In order to investigate the differences between measurements from the two different instruments, we explore the statistical properties of the data and determine reasonable scales in space and time at which to examine them. The resulting differences between the data sets show that the laser and the radar are reflecting from different surfaces and that the magnitude of the difference decreases with increasing surface air temperature. This suggests that the penetration depth of the radar signal, into the snow, varies with temperature. The results also show the potential for computing Arctic wide snow depth maps by combining measurements from laser and radar altimeters.
