[Termes IGN] véhicule automobileRésumé : (auteur) Accurate and continuous vehicle localization in urban environments has been an important research problem in recent years. In this paper, we propose a landmark based localization method using road signs and road markings. The principle is to associate the online detections from onboard cameras with the landmarks in a pre-generated road infrastructure database, then to adjust the raw vehicle pose predicted by the inertial sensors. This method was evaluated with data sequences acquired in urban streets. The results prove the contribution of road signs and road markings for reducing the trajectory drift as absolute control points. [Termes IGN] véhicule automobileRésumé : (auteur) Vision based localization is a cost effective method for indoor and outdoor application. However, it has drift problem if none global optimization is used. We proposed a geo-referenced traffic sign based localization method, which integrated the constraints of 3D traffic signs with local bundle adjustment to reduce the drift. Comparing to global bundle adjustment, Local Bundle Adjustment(LBA) has low computational cost but suffers the drift problem for large scale localization because of the random error accumulation. We reduced the drift by means of the constraints from geo-referenced traffic signs for bundle adjustment process. The original LBA model was extended for the constraints and the traffic signs were detected in images and matched with 3D landmark database automatically. From the experiments of simulated and real images, our approach can reduce the drift and have better locating results than none-constraint LBA based localization method. Simple clustering heuristics fail as soon as similar objects are close. This paper formulates a framework to use the geometric quality of the reconstruction as a hint to do a proper clustering. We present a methodology to solve the resulting combinatorial optimization problem with some simplifications and approximations in order to make it tractable. The proposed method is applied to the reconstruction of 3D traffic signs from their 2D detections to demonstrate its capacity to solve ambiguities. [Termes IGN] vidéo numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper contributes to debates in the emerging field of cinematic cartography (Caquard and Taylor, 2009) by exploring the ways in which strategies of digital cinemapping can function as tools of critical spatial practice and urban wayfinding. More specifically, the paper considers the scope for digital video technologies to reshape, contest and ‘ground’ spaces of urban representation and the ‘spatial stories’ these bring into play. Basing my analysis on the mediation of the events surrounding the abduction and murder of the 2-year-old boy James Bulger in 1993, I examine the case as a constellation of spatial narratives within which I weave my own spatial story in the form of a video mapping of the abduction route (in Bootle near Liverpool) and the responses and issues this further mediation has provoked. Methodological reflections on the map-making process are discussed alongside narratives generated by the video on YouTube. The paper argues that, by adopting practices of wayfinding, and by being critically attentive to the ways in which film and video-making practices are also spatial practices, moving image cartographies can provide insights into lived and embedded spaces of memory, and the hidden or muted spatial stories to which they play host. The design and development of geospatial applications, such as interactive maps and mobile navigation applications, has been typically founded on the expertise of surveying, cartography and geoinformatics. This has often led to relatively complex expert tools that many users find difficult to use. The research of spatial cognition can provide elementary understanding about human thinking in the use situations of these applications and supplement the knowledge gained using the usability research. Perception of landmarks along routes in nature was studied in season and time-of-day studies with participants who walked nature trails in summer, winter, day and night while thinking aloud about the surroundings. The recall of the route was measured afterwards using sketch-map drawing and photo recognition tasks. The think-aloud protocols were analysed using classification of propositions and natural language processing. The importance of landmarks for the human route perception in nature was confirmed. “Structures”, “Passages” and “Waters” were the most perceived landmark groups. Season and time-of-day significantly affected landmark perception and, based on the results, the adaptivity of geospatial applications in the studied conditions can be improved. The transfer of the empirically acquired knowledge of the landmark perception to geoinformatics was illustrated with a formal landmark ontology for hiking in nature. The measures of landmark recall were found unexpectedly similar in all the studied conditions. The similarity was explained by the salience of landmarks in nature and the structure of route-like sketch maps but also by the participants’ conceptions on what should be drawn on maps. “Passages” and “Structures” were the most-often drawn landmark groups on the sketch maps. Support of geospatial images for wayfinding was evaluated using a literaturebased evaluation framework. Visualisation of elevation was experimented with by rendering a 3D map, a derivative of which was compared to 2D elevation visualisations in an eye-tracking study. Vertical elements and elevation were found to be central wayfinding elements in geo-images and the aerial oblique vantage point the most effective image parameter for transferring spatial knowledge. The rendered 3D map was evaluated as cognitively demanding to look at but, however, showed potential in representing the terrain relief. The dissertation also considers challenges in the application of the methods of spatial cognition research and identifies directions for future studies. Note de contenu : 1. Introduction
