[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The Advanced Spacebome Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Terra spacecraft provides alongtrack digital stereo image data at 15m resolution. As part of ASTER digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy evaluation efforts by the US/Japan ASTER Science Team, stereo image data for four study sites around the world have been employed to validate prelaunch estimates of heighting accuracy. Automated stereocorrelation procedures were implemented using the Desktop Mapping System (DMS) software on a personal computer to derive DEMs with 30-to 150m postings. Results indicate that a rootmeansquare error (RMSE) in elevation between + 7 and + 15 m can be achieved with ASTER stereo image data of good quality. An evaluation of an ASTER DEM data product produced at the US Geological Survey (USGS) EROS Data Center (EDC) yielded an RMSE of + 8.6 m. Overall, the ability to extract elevations from ASTER stereopairs using stereocorrelation techniques meets expectations. [Termes IGN] restitutionRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEMs) produced from photogrammetric data sources have long relied on the use of ground control points to give them scale and orientation. However, in areas such as coastlines, landslides, or glaciers, where identification of suitable natural features and premarking is difficult, the use of conventional ground control may be unfeasible. This paper reports on research that uses independently collected DEMs derived from kinematic GPS to orient surfaces produced by aerial photogrammetric methods, using a leastsquares surface matching algorithm. During algorithm development, three stages of testing were carried out, Using increasingly more complex datasets. Initially, simulated surfaces were used to validate the matching theory and program. Then, a DEM derived from conventional aerial photography was matched with a GPS model, highlighting the effectiveness of surface matching to recover systematic errors in datosets. Finally, surfaces derived from small format digital imagery were successfully fused with wireframe GPS surfaces, the high redundancy and automation potential creating an elegant and cheaper alternative to photocontrol. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) The standard method of building compact triangulated surface approximations to terrain surfaces (TINs) from dense digital elevation models (DEMs) adds points to an initial sparse triangulation or removes points from a dense initial mesh. Typically, in each triangle in the current TIN, the worst fitting point, in terms of vertical distance, is selected. The order of insertion of the points is determined by the magnitude of the maximum vertical difference. This measure produces triangulations that minimize the maximum vertical distance between the TIN and the source DEM. Other approximation criteria are often used, however, including the rootmeansquared error or the mean absolute error, both for the vertical difference and normal difference, i.e., the distance in the direction of the normal to the triangular approximation. For these approximation criteria, we still select the worst fit point, but determine the insertion order by various sums of' errors over the triangle. Experiments show that using these better evaluation measures significantly reduces the size of the TIN for a given approximation error. [Termes IGN] image radarRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the enormous quantity of radar images acquired by satellites and through shuttle missions, there is an evident need for efficient automatic analysis tools. This paper describes unsupervised classification of radar images in the framework of hidden Markov models and generalized mixture estimation. Hidden Markov chain models, applied to a Hilbert-Peano scan of the image, constitute a fast and robust alternative to hidden Markov random field models for spatial regularization of image analysis problems, even though the latter provide a finer and more intuitive modeling of spatial relationships. We here compare the two approaches and show that they can be combined in a way that conserves their respective advantages. We also describe how the distribution families and parameters of classes with constant or textured radar reflectivity can he determined through generalized mixture estimation. Sample results obtained on real and simulated radar images are presented.
