[Termes IGN] probabilitésRésumé : (Auteur) Soft classifiers defer the decision about the class membership of a pixel in favor of an expression of the degree of membership it exhibits in each of the landcover classes under consideration. The reasons for using a soft classifier include the examination of classification uncertainty, but are most commonly directed to the potential of uncovering the proportional constituents of mixed pixelsa process called subpixel classification. In this study we examine the assumptions and procedures of a commonly cited Bayesian softclassification procedure for subpixel classification, and test its ability to uncover mixture proportions. The procedure involves the use of mixedcover training sites to estimate the underlying class signatures through the development of fuzzy mean reflectances and covariance matrices. These are then used to evaluate the Bayesian a posteriori probability of belonging to each landcover class. Using an artificial data set, it was found that this Bayesian softclassification procedure is unable to uncover constituent class proportions unless substantial overlap exists in the distributions of parent classes. It was found that the use of fuzzy training sites improves the accuracy of this procedure, but not because of any special insights it offers into the underlying distributions, but rather, because of its tendency to increase the degree of overlap between parent distributions. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) Georeferenced highresolution satellite images can be used for acquisition of topographic information, navigation and visualisation for various environmental studies. The present study is part of the multidisciplinary EU project GEOWARN related to monitoring, warning and emergency planning for volcanic hazards in the island of Nisyros, Greece. Here, the main aim was the orthorectification of a 1m resolution pansharpened IKONOS Geo image of Nisyros island. For the orthorectification, a digital elevation model (DEM) with a cell size of 2 m and an RMS accuracy of ca. 3.5 m was used, as well as 38 selected ground control points (GCPs) measured with differential GPS. An objecttopixel space transformation using the ground control points was computed using two different models, a reliefcorrected affine transformation and the polynomial mapping functions of Kratky. These transformations were used for orthorectification and the orthopboto accuracy was evaluated using GCPs as check points. Postprocessing for radiometric improvement of the orthophotos was applied. The ortbophoto and the DEM served as basic tools for subsequent base mapping and visualisation. The first part presents the proposed method, which is an adaptation of previous work to the specific case of urban areas. The major modifications are 1) the clique potentials of the Markov random field that extracts the road network are adapted and 2) a multiscale framework is used. Results on shutle mission and aerial SAR images with different resolutions are presented. The second part is dedicated to road extraction combining two SAR images taken with different flight directions (orthogonal and antiparallel passes), and the obtained improvement is analyzed. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents an automatic approach for the generalisation of 3D building models with regard to the visualisation of urban landscapes. Simplified versions of such models are not only needed for level of detail structures in real-time rendering, but also for web-based 3D GIS and for the presentation on mobile computing devices. To yield more sophisticated building models compared to already known surface simplification algorithms from the field of computer vision, the presented solution is based on least squares adjustment theory combined with an elaborate set of surface classification and simplification operations. This concept allows for the integration of surface regularities into the building models which are important for visual impression. These regularities are stringently preserved over the course of the generalisation process.
