In this article the spatial variability of soil nutrients was investigated and a regionalized nutrient management system was developed using geostatistics and geographic information system technologies. A total of 511 GPS-referenced soil samples were taken in Yongji County, Shanxi province, China, and analysed for major soil nutrients: soil total nitrogen (TN), Olsen extractable phosphorus (OLSENP) and extractable potassium (EXTK). Low concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were found and they are likely to be the main limiting nutrients for crop growth in this county. Within the county moderate spatial dependence was found for all three soil variables, but at different spatial scales. The spatial distributions of TN, OLSENP and EXTK were estimated by using kriging interpolation. The cropped areas of the county were divided into fertilizer management categories consisting of four classes of TN, three classes of OLSENP and two classes of EXTK. For the targeted crop yields, regionalized fertilization maps of N, P and K in the county were produced using geographic information system. In 3-year field verification trials in two villages the crop yields of the wheat-maize rotation system increased by 10-20%, and farmers' cash income increased by 1550-2610 RMB ha-1 year-1 where regional fertilization recommendations were implemented, in comparison with traditional farmers' practices. The regionalized maps are a practical alternative to site-specific soil nutrient management approaches in areas where it is not practical, because of small farm size or other constraints, to use intensive soil sampling and chemical analyses. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Interpolation of point measurements using geostatistical techniques such as kriging can be used to estimate values at non-sampled locations in space. Traditional geostatistics are based on the spatial autocorrelation concept that nearby things are more related than distant things. In this study, additional information was used to modify the traditional Euclidean concept of distance into an adjusted distance metric that incorporates similarity in terms of quantifiable landscape characteristics such as topography or land use. This new approach was tested by interpolating soil moisture content, pH and carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio measured in both the mineral and the organic soil layers at a field site in central Sweden. Semivariograms were created using both the traditional distance metrics and the proposed adjusted distance metrics to carry out ordinary kriging (OK) interpolations between sampling points. In addition, kriging with external drift (KED) was used to interpolate soil properties to evaluate the ability of the adjusted distance metric to incorporate secondary data into interpolations. The new adjusted distance metric typically lowered the nugget associated with the semivariogram, thereby better representing small-scale variability in the measured data compared to semivariograms based on the traditional distance metric. The pattern of the resulting kriging interpolations using KED and OK based on the adjusted distance metric were similar because they represented secondary data and, thus, enhanced small-scale variability compared to traditional distance OK. This created interpolations that agreed better with what is expected for the real-world spatial variation of the measured properties. Based on cross-validation error, OK interpolations using the adjusted distance metric better fit observed data than either OK interpolations using traditional distance or KED. [Termes IGN] Kiangsou (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) It is important to map dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations in order to accurately predict the outbreak of red tides. This study aims to determine the feasibility of retrieving DIN in Haizhou Bay, East China from multi-temporal MODIS satellite data and to assess the impact of DIN concentration level on its inversion accuracy. DIN was modeled from the reflectance of MODIS bands and their combinations both linearly and nonlinearly. It was found that individual MODIS bands are loosely correlated with DIN concentrations. Of the various combinations of multiple bands, bands 3 and 4 bear a highly positive correlation with DIN concentrations. In particular, (R3 + R4)/(R3 - R4) is a more accurate predictor of DIN than R3 times R4/(R3 - R4). All the regression models involving this exploratory variable have an R2 value over 0.7 and a relative accuracy of around 70%. However, regression residuals are dependent of each other for DIN 70 ug/L in murky coastal waters. During the study period of 2004-2006, Haizhou Bay experienced a deteriorating trend in DIN in that low concentration areas decreased while areas of a high DIN concentration level expanded. [Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) Fall fertilization may increase plant nutrient reserves, yet associated impacts on seedling cold hardiness are relatively unexplored. Bareroot red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) seedlings in north-central Minnesota, USA were fall fertilized at the end of the first growing season with ammonium nitrate (NH4 NO3) at 0, 11, 22, 44, or 89 kg N ha−1. Seedling morphology and cold hardiness [assessed by freeze induced electrolyte leakage (FIEL)] were evaluated six weeks after fertilization and following the second growing season. Seedling height and number of needle primordia increased with fertilizer rate for both sampling years. Seedlings fertilized with 44 and 89 kg N ha−1 attained target height (15 cm) after the second growing season. Shoot and root N concentration increased after the first growing season in fall fertilized seedlings compared to controls. Fall fertilized seedlings had lower FIEL (i.e., increased cold hardiness) compared to controls when tested at –40 °C after the first growing season, but no significant differences in FIEL of control and fertilized seedlings were observed after the second growing season. Results suggest that fall fertilization of red pine seedlings can help render desired target height in the nursery, while maintaining or increasing cold hardiness levels.
