[Termes IGN] image obliqueRésumé : (Auteur) The 2006 edition of the ASPRS Annual Conference was held in Reno, Nevada between 1st and 5th may and attracted 1350 participants. As usual they were offered the first-class technical exhibition that we have come to expect at this meeting. Almost all the major system suppliers and software houses were present, as were several of the main commercial providers of mapping services in North America. Besides which, all the major U.S. government agencies concerned with mapping (USGS, NOAA, NIMA, EPA, NASA) had interesting displays. However a special feature of this year's technical exhibition was the introduction of a number of new airborne digital frame cameras based on the latest generation of larger-format CCD area arrays that have been released by the manufacturers over the last half-year or so. These arrays provide a substantial increase in performance, especially in terms of the ground coverage and resolution that can be achieved within an individual frame image. Besides these important products, the exhibition also saw the launch of a new airborne multiple camera system and a new airborne pushbroom scanner, both designed to acquire oblique digital imagery. Yet another introduction was that of a new model of an airborne laser scanner. On the DPW front, the exhibition saw the introduction of a number of stereo-displays, including an example of an auto-stereoscopic system, as well as numerous enhancements to DPW software. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution satellite images at sub-5-m footprint, such as IKONOS and SPOT5 HRG/HRS images, are becoming increasingly available to the earth observation community and their respective clients. The related cameras all use linear array CCD technology for image sensing. The processing of these kinds of images provides a challenge for algorithmic redesign and this offers the possibility of reconsidering and improving many photogrammetric processing components. This contribution presents an advanced matching approach for automatic DSM generation from high-resolution satellite images. It can provide dense, precise and reliable results. The method matches multiple (more than two) images simultaneously and it uses a coarse-to-fine hierarchical solution with an effective combination of several image matching algorithms and automatic quality control. The DSMs are generated by a combination of matching results of feature points, grid points and edges. The proposed approach has been applied to IKONOS images over a testfield in Thun, Switzerland with accurate ground control points, a 1600-m height range and variable land cover, but with sub-optimal imaging conditions (snow, long shadows). The accuracy tests are based on the comparison between the reference data from an airborne laser scanner and the automatically extracted DSMs. The RMS errors for the whole area, excluding trees and bushes, are 2-3 m, while for bare ground the accuracy is about 1 m or even better. [Termes IGN] Multi-Angle Imaging SpectroradiometerRésumé : (Auteur) This paper focuses on the validation aspect of the geometric calibration approach as implemented for the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), a part of the payload for NASA's Terra spacecraft. The MISR instrument, launched in December 1999, continuously acquires a systematic, global, multi-angle imagery in reflected sunlight in order to support and improve studies of-Earth's ecology and climate. Moderate-resolution data acquired with a unique configuration of nine fixed pushbroom cameras need to be autonomously georectified prior to use in subsequent scientific retrievals. A robust data production algorithm is based on in-flight generated calibration datasets produced at the beginning of the mission and operationally validated in the first two years. However, in order to maintain required subpixel co-registration accuracies, globally and throughout the life of the mission, data production operations are complemented with a quality monitoring system. This system has been critical in: 1) resolving impact issues that georectification quality may have on subsequent retrievals, 2) providing bases for decisions regarding updates of the calibration datasets and production algorithm, and 3) evaluating and summarizing overall pointing stability and georectification performance. With the series of quality investigations focusing on the georectification requirements, it was determined that the pointing stability of one of the cameras is not as good as the other eight cameras. As a result, the data production algorithm has been updated to assure uniform georectification and co-registration performance prior to processing a final data collection for the entire life of the mission. Presented in this paper will be: an overview of the calibration approach and related quality monitoring system, operational results prior to and after the final implementation and the global summaries on geospatial data accuracies. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) The cameras commonly used for Earth observation from satellites require high attitude stability during the image acquisition. For some types of cameras (high-resolution 'pushbroom' scanners in particular), instantaneous attitude changes of even less than one arcsecond result in significant image distortion and blurring. Especially problematic are the effects of high-frequency attitude variations originating from micro-shocks and vibrations produced by the momentum and reaction wheels, mechanically activated coolers, and steering and deployment mechanisms on board. The resulting high attitude-stability requirements for Earth-observation satellites are one of the main reasons for their complexity and high cost. The novel SmartScan imaging concept, based on an opto-electronic system with no moving parts, offers the promise of high-quality imaging with only moderate satellite attitude stability. SmartScan uses real-time recording of the actual image motion in the focal plane of the camera during frame acquisition to correct the distortions in the image. Exceptional real-time performances with subpixel-accuracy image-motion measurement are provided by an innovative high-speed onboard opto-electronic correlation processor. SmartScan will therefore allow pushbroom scanners to be used for hyperspectral imaging from satellites and other space platforms not primarily intended for imaging missions, such as micro- and nano-satellites with simplified attitude control, low-orbiting communications satellites, and manned space stations.
