[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel algorithm for extracting street light poles from vehicleborne mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point-clouds. First, the algorithm rapidly detects curb-lines and segments a point-cloud into road and nonroad surface points based on trajectory data recorded by the integrated position and orientation system onboard the vehicle. Second, the algorithm accurately extracts street light poles from the segmented nonroad surface points using a novel pairwise 3-D shape context. The proposed algorithm is tested on a set of point-clouds acquired by a RIEGL VMX-450 mobile LiDAR system. The results show that road surfaces are correctly segmented, and street light poles are robustly extracted with a completeness exceeding 99%, a correctness exceeding 97%, and a quality exceeding 96%, thereby demonstrating the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed algorithm to segment road surfaces and extract street light poles from huge volumes of mobile LiDAR point-clouds. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) Target identification is an important process in terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) measurements; however, due to strong competition between manufacturers, the design of laser scanners is kept secret and is usually strengthened by accompanying proprietary software. Moreover, the target identification algorithms (i.e. definitions of the target centre) are not specified. This makes it difficult for users to objectively compare scanners from different manufacturers and to judge the reliability of the captured scan data by a brand scanner and accompanying software. This paper presents a unified general method to complete the process of target identification. The proposed method consists of four major steps: first, determination of the target plane; second, classification of the reflection intensity values and extraction of the border between white and black; third, detection and elimination of erroneous points from step two; and fourth, fitting of the intersection lines and calculation of the centre of the two lines. Because TLS is a reflectorless surveying model that can receive hundreds of signals, its measurements require more stringent objective conditions than traditional measurement by total stations (TS). Therefore, robust estimation methods are used to reduce the influence of random errors; moreover, the model of error-in-value (EIV) is also introduced to deal with captured data. Finally, the target’s centre can be obtained from an iteration process. For the experiments, a Leica HDS 7000 terrestrial laser scanner, with its accompanying software, Cyclone, and a Leica Laser Tracker AT901 were employed. The performance of the proposed method is compared with Cyclone and some early methods from published studies at different resolutions and distances. The paper concludes that the proposed method can obtain reliable results at the same level of accuracy level as those obtained using accompanying software; thus, it provides an objective means to compare the quality of different scanners. The advantage is that our method only makes use of information provided by all scanners and does not require additional proprietary information that cannot be accessed. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) The application of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) in capturing forest inventory parameters such as diameter at breast height, height and diameters along stem profiles, and in monitoring forest growth, was investigated and validated by comparison with conventionally measured individual tree parameters and plot-level forest growth in a stand of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) in Ireland. The data acquisition for all the plots with different tree sizes and different slopes was carried out using a terrestrial laser scanner (FARO LS 800 HE80) in November 2007 and November 2009, using the same plot centres and measurement procedures. The point cloud data were processed with Autostem™ software. The results showed that TLS enables the acquisition of forest stand parameters with an acceptable accuracy. Pruning of the lower branches did not improve tree recognition and the number of (partly) occluded trees stayed the same. Over the 2-year period, the average difference between the volume increment of the trees visible to the scanner derived using the conventional method and Autostem™ was 4.77 m3 ha−1 and resulted in scanner-derived estimates that were lower than the estimates obtained by conventional method by 6.1 %. Using a simple correction factor to account for occlusion in the laser scanner data, the difference between these estimates for all trees in the stand became an over-estimation by 6.96 m3 ha−1 (8.1 %). At heights up along the stems >15 m, the errors in stem diameter estimates started to escalate. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) The present paper compares between four data sources for creating digital terrain models (DTMs), based on analytical aerial photogrammetry, laser scanning, total station (TS) and global positioning system surveys. The case study presents the comparative results obtained using the methods listed above. After obtaining the ground coordinates of points using each method, DTMs were created using Surfer Software to establish comparison consistency. To check accuracy of each method used, a series of 100 independent points were collected at random positions over the case study area using the TS for horizontal position and a digital level for elevation. The comparison of the results of the methods was performed based on accuracy and efficiency aspects. The results have shown that TS and terrestrial laser scanners (TLSs) could represent precise, effective and rapid solutions to produce economical and accurate DTMs. Also, using TLSs allow more various possibilities of data representation. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser transportableRésumé : (auteur) Tahiti is a unique geodetic site located in the south Pacific Ocean where few observatories exist nearby. The American mobile station MOBLAS-8 was installed in Tahiti in 1998, and GPS and DORIS systems were also deployed in its vicinity in order to develop this site into one of the fundamental colocated sites of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame. In order to make a new estimate of the colocation differences between the different techniques, a campaign of the French Transportable Laser Ranging System (FTLRS) was conducted in Tahiti between April and October 2011. The FTLRS was deployed close to the existing equipment. Observations for LAGEOS 1, LAGEOS 2 and Starlette were studied, and the solutions to the local ties between FTLRS, MOBLAS-8, DORIS and GPS were evaluated. Our results of the geodetic local-ties between laser stations and GPS agree well with the measurements made by the Institut National de l’Information Géographique et Forestière (IGN) during the campaign, with differences less than 2 mm in the vertical direction. The laser station range biases as a function of satellites are also presented, −3 (±2) mm for MOBLAS-8 and 3 (±3) mm for FTLRS, respectively. In addition, we investigated the role of time bias (ranging from a few hundreds of nanoseconds to one microsecond) given by the Time Transfer by Laser Link experiment, which shows a limited impact on the present SLR analysis. We also compared the coordinates of the three available techniques at Tahiti, i.e., laser, GPS and DORIS. We found the accuracy of laser solutions still needs to be improved, so that the SLR at Tahiti could contribute more effectively to the tracking of satellites and thus to the international reference frame. This study is useful in evaluating the SLR and other space techniques in order to prepare the deployment of new equipment in Tahiti in the near future.
