[Termes IGN] SIG participatifRésumé : (auteur) Societies have rapidly morphed into complex entities that are creating accessibility, yet, at the same time, they are developing new forms of neogeographic-poverty related to information uptake. Those that have managed to partake in the opportunities provided by the web have new vistas to survive in, in contrast to the new poor who have limited or no access to information. New forms of data in spatial format are accessible to all, however few realize the implications of such a transitional change in wellbeing: Whether entire societies or individuals. The different generations taking up the information access can face different levels of accessibility that may be limited by access to online data, knowledge of usage of tools and the understanding of the results, all within the limits on the spaces they are familiar with. This paper reviews a conceptual process underlining the initial steps of a long-term project in the Maltese Islands that seeks to create an online series of tools that bring the concept of “physical place” to the different generations through the management of a major project, the creation of a 3D virtuality, employing scanning processes, GIS, conversion aspects, and a small block-based Minecraft engine. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (auteur) Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a powerful tool to monitor large-scale ground deformation at active volcanoes. However, vegetation and pyroclastic deposits degrade the radar coherence and therefore the measurement of 3-D surface displacements. In this article, we explore the complementarity between ALOS–PALSAR coherence images, airborne LiDAR data and in situ measurements acquired over the Piton de La Fournaise volcano (Reunion Island, France) to determine the sources of errors that may affect repeat-pass InSAR measurements. We investigate three types of surfaces: terrains covered with vegetation, lava flows (a′a, pahoehoe or slabby pahoehoe lava flows) and pyroclastic deposits (lapilli). To explain the loss of coherence observed over the Dolomieu crater between 2008 and 2009, we first use laser altimetry data to map topographic variations. The LiDAR intensity, which depends on surface reflectance, also provides ancillary information about the potential sources of coherence loss. In addition, surface roughness and rock dielectric properties of each terrain have been determined in situ to better understand how electromagnetic waves interact with such media: rough and porous surfaces, such as the a′a lava flows, produce a higher coherence loss than smoother surfaces, such as the pahoehoe lava flows. Variations in dielectric properties suggest a higher penetration depth in pyroclasts than in lava flows at L-band frequency. Decorrelation over the lapilli is hence mainly caused by volumetric effects. Finally, a map of LAI (Leaf Area Index) produced using SPOT 5 imagery allows us to quantify the effect of vegetation density: radar coherence is negatively correlated with LAI and is unreliable for values higher than 7.5. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3DRésumé : (Auteur) A 3-D tree structure plays an important role in many scientific fields, including forestry and agriculture. For example, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) can efficiently capture high-precision 3-D spatial arrangements and structure of trees as a point cloud. In the past, several methods to reconstruct 3-D trees from the TLS point cloud were proposed. However, in general, they fail to process incomplete TLS data. To address such incomplete TLS data sets, a new method that is based on a structure-aware global optimization approach (SAGO) is proposed. The SAGO first obtains the approximate tree skeleton from a distance minimum spanning tree (DMst) and then defines the stretching directions of the branches on the tree skeleton. Based on these stretching directions, the SAGO recovers missing data in the incomplete TLS point cloud. The DMst is applied again to obtain the refined tree skeleton from the optimized data, and the tree skeleton is smoothed by employing a Laplacian function. To reconstruct 3-D tree models, the radius of each branch section is estimated, and leaves are added to form the crown geometry. The developed methodology has been extensively evaluated by employing a dozen TLS point clouds of various types of trees. Both qualitative and quantitative performance evaluation results have indicated that the SAGO is capable of effectively reconstructing 3-D tree models from grossly incomplete TLS point clouds with significant amounts of missing data. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur)This study explored a combination of hyperspectral and lidar systems for vegetation mapping in the Florida Everglades. A framework was designed to integrate two remotely sensed datasets and four data processing techniques. Lidar elevation and intensity features were extracted from the original point cloud data to avoid the errors and uncertainties in the raster-based lidar methods. Lidar significantly increased the classification accuracy compared with the application of hyperspectral data alone. Three lidar-derived features (elevation, intensity, and topography) had the same contributions in the classification. A synergy of hyperspectral imagery with all lidar-derived features achieved the best result with an overall accuracy of 86 percent and a Kappa value of 0.82 based on an ensemble analysis of three machine learning classifiers. Ensemble analysis did not significantly increase the classification accuracy, but it provided a complementary uncertainty map for the final classified map. The study shows the promise of the synergy of hyperspectral and lidar systems for mapping complex wetlands.
