[Termes IGN] morphologie urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this article is to present a method to calculate the morphological properties of the built environment using LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data, geographic information systems (GIS) data and three-dimensional (3D) models of cities as a source of information. A hybrid approach that takes into account different types of inputs and consequently evaluates the accuracy of each type of used data is presented. This work is intended to give a first response to the lack of a comprehensive and accurate procedure that uses LiDAR data in order to automatically derive precise morphological properties, such as volumes and surfaces (façades and roofs) of buildings. The method was tested on two case-study areas in the Geneva region with different characteristics, one in the old town along the Rhone River and the other on the CERN campus. A statistical analysis that compares the results of the computation with the 3D model of the built environment was used to validate the results, complemented by significance statistical tests. Outcomes showed that the proposed method to derive morphological properties can reach high levels of accuracy, thus enhancing the potential uses of LiDAR data for numerous applications, typically for the assessment of the urban environmental quality (UEQ) at the city and district scale, such as the estimation of the potential deployment of renewable energies in the built environment and the determination and monitoring of several urban indicators. [Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents an object-based conceptual framework and numerical algorithms for representing and analyzing coastal morphological and volumetric changes based on repeat airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) surveys. This method identifies and delineates individual zones of erosion and deposition as discrete objects. The explicit object representation of erosion and deposition zones is consistent with the perception and cognition of human analysts and geomorphologists. The extracted objects provide ontological and epistemological foundation to localize, represent, and interpret erosion and deposition patches for better coastal resource management and erosion control. The discrete objects are much better information carriers than the grid cells in the field-based representation of source data. A set of spatial and volumetric attributes are derived to characterize and quantify location, area, shape, orientation, depth, volume, and other properties of erosion and deposition objects. Compared with the conventional cell-by-cell differencing approaches, our object-based method gives a concise and high-level representation of information and knowledge about coastal morphological dynamics. The derived attributes enable the discrimination of true morphological changes from artifacts caused by data noise and processing errors. Furthermore, the concise object representation of erosion and deposition zones facilitates overlay analysis in conjunction with other GIS data layers for understanding the causes and impacts of morphological and volumetric changes. We have implemented a software tool for our object-based morphological analysis, which will be freely available for the public. An example is used to demonstrate the utility and effectiveness of this new method. [Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (Auteur) Recently, the intensity characteristics of discrete-return LiDAR sensors were studied for vegetation classification. We examined two normalization procedures affecting LiDAR intensity through the scanning geometry and the system settings, namely, range normalization and the effects of the automatic gain control (AGC) in the Optech ALTM3100 and Leica ALS50-II sensors. Range normalization corresponds to weighting of the observed intensities with the term (R/RRef)a , where R is the range, RRef is a mean reference range, and aset membership, variant[2,4] is the exponent that is, according to theory, dependent on the target geometry. LiDAR points belonging to individual tree crowns were extracted for 13 887 trees in southern Finland. The coefficient of variation (CV) of the intensity was analyzed for a range of values of exponent a. The tree species classification performance using 13 intensity variables was also used for sensitivity analysis of the effect of a. The results were in line with the established theory, since the optimal level of a was lower (a~2) for trees with large or clumped leaves and higher (a~3) for diffuse coniferous crowns. Different echo groups also showed varying responses. Single-return pulses that represented strong reflections had a lower optimal value of a than the first and all echoes in a pulse. The gain in classification accuracy from the optimal selection of the exponent was 2%–3%, and the optimum for classification was different from that obtained using the CV analysis. In the ALS50-II sensor, the combined and optimized AGC and R normalizations had a notably larger effect (6%–9%) on classification accuracy. Our study demonstrates the ambiguity of R normalization in vegetation canopies. [Termes IGN] recensement démographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The collection of population by census is laborious, time consuming and expensive, and often only available at limited temporal and spatial scales. Remote sensing based population estimation has been employed as a viable alternative for providing population estimates based on indicators that make use of two-dimensional areal information of buildings or one-dimensional length information of roads The recent advancement of LIDAR remote sensing provides the opportunity to add the third dimension of height information into the modeling of population distribution. This study explores the use of building volumes derived from LIDAR as a population indicator. Our study shows the volume-based model consistently outperforms area and length-based models at the census block level. Additionally, the study examines the impact of spatial autocorrelation, the presence of which violates the independence assumption of the traditional OLS models. To address this problem, a spatial autoregressive model is employed to account for the spatial autocorrelation in the regression residuals. By incorporating the spatial pattern, the volume-based spatial error model achieves a goodness of fit (R2) of 85 percent, with a significant improvement in model performance and estimation accuracies in comparison with its OLS counterpart. The study confirms building volume as a more valuable indicator and estimator for block level population distribution, especially if an appropriate spatial autoregressive model is adopted.
