[Termes IGN] MNS SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) Vegetation canopy heights derived from the SRTM 30 m grid DEM minus USGS National Elevation Data (NED) DTM were compared to three vegetation metrics derived from a medium footprint LIDAR data (LVIS) for the US Sierra Nevada forest in California. Generally the SRTM minus NED was found to underestimate the vegetation canopy height. Comparing the SRTM-NED-derived heights as a function of the canopy percentile height (shape/vertical structure) derived from LVIS, the SRTM SAR signal was found to penetrate, on average, into about 44% of the canopy and 85% after adjustment of the data. On the canopy type analysis, it was found that the SRTM phase scattering centres occurred at 60% for red fir, 53% for Sierra mixed conifer, 50% for ponderosa pine and 50% for montane hardwood-conifer. Whereas analysing the residual errors of the SRTM-NED minus the LVIS-derived canopy height as a function of LVIS canopy height and cover it was observed that the residuals generally increase with increasing canopy height and cover. Likewise, the behaviour of the RMSE as a function of canopy height and cover was observed to initially increase with canopy height and cover but saturates at 50 m canopy height and 60% canopy cover. On the other hand, the behaviour of the correlation coefficient as a function of canopy height and cover was found to be high at lower canopy height (15 m and 20% and Numéro de notice : A2009-257 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/01431160802555853 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160802555853 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=29887

[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar systems have been widely adopted for the acquisition of dense and accurate topographic data over extended areas. The level of detail and the quality of the collected point cloud motivated the research community to investigate the possibility of automatic object extraction from such data. Prior knowledge of the terrain surface will improve the performance of object detection and extraction procedures. In this paper, a new strategy for automatic terrain extraction from lidar data is presented. The proposed strategy is based on the fact that sudden elevation changes, which usually correspond to non-ground objects, will cause relief displacements in perspective views. The introduced relief displacements will occlude neighboring ground points. To start the process, we generate a digital surface model (DSM) from the irregular lidar points using an interpolation procedure. The presence of sudden-elevation changes and the resulting occlusions can be discerned by sequentially checking the off-nadir angles to the lines of sight connecting the DSM cells and a pre-defined set of synthesized projection centers. Detected occlusions are then used to identify the occluding points, which are hypothesized to be non-ground points. Surface roughness and discontinuities together with inherent noise in the point cloud will lead to some false hypotheses. Therefore, we use a statistical filter to remove these false hypotheses. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated and verified using both simulated and real lidar datasets with varying levels of complexity. [Termes IGN] trajectographie par GPSRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar (laser scanning) technology has been proven as a prominent technique for the acquisition of high-density and accurate topographic information. Because of systematic errors in the lidar measurements (drifts in the position and orientation information and biases in the mirror angles and ranges) and/or in the parameters relating the system components (mounting parameters), adjacent lidar strips may exhibit discrepancies. Although position and orientation drifts can have a more significant impact, these errors and their impact do not come as a surprise if the quality of the GPS/INS integration process is carefully examined. Therefore, the mounting errors are singled out in this work. The ideal solution for improving the compatibility of neighbouring strips in the presence of errors in the mounting parameters is the implementation of a rigorous calibration procedure. However, such a calibration requires the original observations, which may not be usually available. In this paper, a strip adjustment procedure to improve the compatibility between parallel lidar strips with moderate flight dynamics (for example, acquired by a fixed-wing aircraft) over an area with moderately varying elevation is proposed. The proposed method is similar to the photogrammetric block adjustment of independent models. Instead of point features, planar patches and linear features, which are represented by sets of non-conjugate points, are used for the strip adjustment. The feasibility and the performance of the proposed procedure together with its impact on subsequent activities are illustrated using experimental results from real data.
