Note de contenu : 1. Introduction

[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) The paper presents an iterative matching method to improve a direct geo-referencing approach for stationary terrestrial 3D laser scans by means of the positional and transformational uncertainties of two 3D point clouds. In this approach, a geo-referenced point cloud from a station inherits the following stochastic information: (1) transformational uncertainties from processed GNSS data through the Kalman filter and (2) positional uncertainties through the range and angular uncertainties from the terrestrial laser scanner as well as the incident angle of the laser beam to a surface. This stochastic information from two (pre-) geo-referenced 3D point clouds is implemented within a novel iterative matching algorithm, named Geo-referencing ICP with Helmert 3D transformation, for subsequent post-processing procedures such as segmentation and further calibration. [Termes IGN] texturageRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] One might wonder what can be gained from the image-laser fusion and in which measure such a hybrid system can generate automatically complete and photorealist 3D models of difficult to access and unstructured underground environments. Our research work is focused on developing a vision-based system aimed at automatically generating in-situ photorealist 3D models in previously unknown and unstructured underground environments from image and laser data. In particular, we are interested in modeling underground prehistoric caves. In such environments, special attention must be given to the main issue standing behind the automation of the 3D modeling pipeline which is represented by the capacity to match reliably image and laser data in GPS-denied and feature-less areas. In addition, time and in-situ access constraints require fast and automatic procedures for in-situ data acquisition, processing and interpretation in order to allow forin-situ verification of the 3D scene model completeness. Finally, the currently generated 3D model represents the only available information providing situational awareness based on which autonomous behavior must be built in order to enable the system to act intelligently on-the-fly and explore the environment to ensure the 3D scene model completeness. This chapter evaluates the potential of a hybrid image-laser system for generating in-situ complete and photorealist 3D models of challenging environments, while minimizing human operator intervention. The presented research focuses on two main aspects: (i) the automation of the 3D modeling pipeline, targeting the automatic data matching in feature-less and GPS-denied areas for in-situ world modeling and (ii) the exploitation of the generated 3Dmodels along with visual servoing procedures to ensure automatically the 3D scene model completeness. We start this chapter by motivating the jointly use of laser and image data and by listing the main key issues which need to be addressed when aiming to supply automatic photorealist3D modeling tasks while coping with time and in-situ access constraints. The next four sections are dedicated to a gradual description of the 3D modeling system in which we project the proposed image-laser solutions designed to be embedded onboard mobile plateforms, providing them with world modeling capabilities and thus visual perception. This is an important aspect for the in-situ modeling process, allowing the system to be aware and to act intelligently on-the-fly in order to explore and digitize the entire site. For this reason, we introduce it as ARTVISYS, the acronym for ARTificial VIsion-based SYStems. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineIndex. décimale : 30.60 Géodésie spatiale Résumé : (Auteur) There is a growing demand for high-quality spatial data and for efficient methods of updating spatial databases. In the present study, automated object-based interpretation methods were developed and tested for coarse land use mapping, detailed land cover and building mapping, and change detection of buildings. Various modern remotely sensed datasets were used in the study. An automatic classification tree method was applied to building detection and land cover classification to automate the development of classification rules. A combination of a permanent land cover classification test field and the classification tree method was suggested and tested to allow rapid analysis and comparison of new datasets. The classification and change detection results were compared with up-to-date map data or reference points to evaluate their quality. The combined use of airborne laser scanner data and digital aerial imagery gave promising results considering topographic mapping. In automated building detection using laser scanner and aerial image data, 96% of all buildings larger than 60 m2 were correctly detected. This accuracy level (96%) is compatible with operational quality requirements. In automated change detection, about 80% of all reference buildings were correctly classified. The overall accuracy of a land cover classification into buildings, trees, vegetated ground and non-vegetated ground using laser scanner and aerial image data was 97% compared with reference points. When aerial image data alone were used, the accuracy was 74%. A comparison between first pulse and last pulse laser scanner data in building detection was also carried out. The comparison showed that the use of last pulse data instead of first pulse data can improve the building detection results. The results yielded by automated interpretation methods could be helpful in the manual updating process of a topographic database. The results could also be used as the basis for further automated processing steps to delineate and reconstruct objects. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical satellite image data used in the study have their main potential in land cover monitoring applications. The coarse land use classification of a multitemporal interferometric SAR dataset into built-up areas, forests and open areas lead to an overall accuracy of 97% when compared with reference points. This dataset also appeared to be promising for classifying built-up areas into subclasses according to building density. Important topics for further research include more advanced interpretation methods, new and multitemporal datasets, optimal combinations of the datasets, and wider sets of objects and classes. From the practical point of view, work is needed in fitting automated interpretation methods in operational mapping processes and in further testing of the methods. Note de contenu : 1. INTRODUCTION
