[Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Results of observations of the Mt. Vesuvius caldera, carried out by means of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) in May 2005, October 2006 and June 2009, are reported here. In each survey the whole crater was acquired with 17/20 scans from 6 different viewpoints and the corresponding digital surface models were generated and registered into the UTM-WGS84 reference frame. In this way, a comparison between the multitemporal models leads to an evaluation of the occurred changes. The deformation maps, i.e. the contouring plots of the differences between the models along the direction of maximum variations, showed a progressive mass loss due to rock-falls from the NE vertical crater wall whose area was about 5000m2. The TLS data also showed the accumulation at the bottom. The volume loss which occurred from 2005 to 2009, was computed by subtraction of volumes defined with respect to reference planes parallel to the caldera walls and was estimated to be 20300m3. The volume uncertainties due to registration errors, subsampling noise effects, and effects due to choice of the reference plane, were also estimated. Some results were also interpreted on the basis of micro-seismic and meteorological data in order to plan a monitoring technique where seismic signals related to rock-fall and/or signals of intense rainfalls are used as alarms for fast TLS surveys able to characterize the corresponding changes of the caldera walls. The proposed methodology, in particular the simple but effective approach used in the estimation of volume uncertainties, can be applied to each rock slope instability phenomenon, regardless of the particular environment. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) The first step in the preservation of monuments and historic buildings is to completely survey and map the target; this is followed by digitised documentation for future research, reference or rebuild. With the help of point-cloud mapping and scanning technology, the problems of manual measurement and documentation can be solved fast and efficiently. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) The height and shape of shrub canopies are critical measurements for characterizing shrub steppe rangelands. Remote sensing technologies might provide an efficient method to acquire these measurements across large areas. This study compared point-cloud and rasterized lidar data to field-measured sagebrush height and shape to quantify the correlation between field-based and lidar-derived estimates. The results demonstrated that discrete return, small-footprint lidar with high point density (9.46 points/m2) can provide strong predictions of true sagebrush height (H2 of 0.84 to 0.86), but with a consistent underestimation of approximately 30 percent. Our results provided the first successful lidar-based descriptors of sagebrush shape with R2 values of 0.65, 0.74, and 0.78 for respective predictions of shortest canopy diameter, longest canopy diameter, and canopy area. Future studies can extend lidar-derived shrub height and shape measurements to canopy volume, cover, and biomass estimates. [Termes IGN] squelettisationRésumé : (auteur) Modeling the 3D canopy structure of trees provides the structural mapping capability on which to assign distributed values of light-driven physiological processes in tree canopies. We evaluate the potential of automatically extracted skeletons from terrestrial lidar data as a basis for modeling canopy structure. The automatic and species independent evaluation method for lidar data of trees is based on the SKELTRE algorithm. The SKELTRE skeleton is a graphical representation of the branch hierarchy. The extraction of the branch hierarchy utilizes a graph splitting procedure to extract the branches from the skeleton. Analyzing the distance between the point cloud points and the skeleton is the key to the branch diameter. Frequency distributions of branch length and diameter were chosen to test the algorithm performance in comparison to manually measured data and resulted in a correlation of up to 0.78 for the branch length and up to 0.99 for the branch diameter.
