We model speckle as additive signaldependent noise, and propose to use the normal inverse Gaussian (NIG) distribution as a statistical model for the wavelet coefficients of both the reflectance image and the noise image. A method for estimating the parameters of the proposed statistical models is presented, and we show that the NIG distribution makes excellent fits to the distributions of the wavelet coefficients of single-look synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The performance of the g-WMAP filter is tested on three single-look SAR images. We find that when the filter is used in a global mode it may severely blur the image. However, when applied in a local, adaptive mode the new algorithm has excellent de-speckling performance. Visual comparisons with the g-MAP filter show that g-WMAP tends to give better de-speckling. Quantitative comparisons in homogeneous regions using both the equivalent number of looks and the log standard deviation as measures definitely show that the g-WMAP gives better speckle filtering. In the light of recent expansion of the technique to a wide range of applications, the need for an up-to-date reference has become urgent. This fully revised and expanded edition of the best-selling Surface-Penetrating Radar (IEE, 1996) presents, for the non-specialist user or engineer, all the key elements of this technique, which span several disciplines including electromagnetics, geophysics and signal processing. The book will help users to assess the potential of the technique and currently available technology and to apply them effectively. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) This work proposes new speckle reduction filters for multilook, amplitude detected Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) approach and compares their performance. The new filters use an adaptive approach based on the one-dimensional k-means clustering algorithm over the variance ratio and also a regiongrowing procedure. The trade-off between the loss of radiometric resolution and edge preservation is evaluated in the filtered images. In order to obtain quantitative measures of the speckle reduction and of the edge blurring, we used some parameters such as the classical equivalent number of looks and the Hough transform. Experiments have been carried out with natural images corrupted with synthetic speckle noise following the Rayleigh and square root of gamma distributions and with real SAR images. Monitoring the plant on small water bodies can be done from the shore. On large lakes like Lake Victoria, however, this no longer works adequately. Remote sensing techniques can provide a means to monitor the presence of water hyacinth on large lakes. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) techniques are not hampered by cloud cover and can produce good quality data, well-suited for the inventory of water hyacinth. [Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Incidence angle dependence of three statistical parameters the mean of the backscattering coefficient (°) standard deviation, and autocorrelation coefficient of texture (T and T) of the C band horizontal-horizontal (HH) polarization backscattering signatures of the Baltic Sea ice are investigated using RADARSAT ScanSAR Narrow images and helicopterborne Helsinki University of Technology Scatterometer (HUTSCAT) data. The analysis of the large amount of data shows that the relationship between the mean ° in decibel scale and the incidence angle in the range from 19° to 46° is usually well described by a linear model. In general, the RADARSAT and HUTSCAT results agree with each other, and they are also supported by theoretical backscattering model calculations; the more deformed the ice, the smaller the slope between ° and the incidence angle, and the higher the moisture content of snow or ice, the larger the slope. The derived ° incidence angle dependencies can be used to roughly compensate the ° incidence angle variation in the SAR images to help their visual and automated classification. The variability of T and T with the increasing incidence angle is insignificant compared to the variability within each ice type. Their average changes with the incidence angle are so small that, in practice, their trends do not need to be compensated. The results of this study can be utilized when developing classification algorithms for the RADARSAT ScanSAR and ENVISAT HH-polarization Wide Swath images of the Baltic Sea ice.
