[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Deforestation and forest degradation have several negative effects on the environment including a loss of species habitats, disturbance of the water cycle and reduced ability to retain CO2, with consequences for global warming. We investigated the evolution of forest resources from development regions in Romania affected by both deforestation and reforestation using a non-Euclidean method based on fractal analysis. We calculated four fractal dimensions of forest areas: the fractal box-counting dimension of the forest areas, the fractal box-counting dimension of the dilated forest areas, the fractal dilation dimension and the box-counting dimension of the border of the dilated forest areas. Fractal analysis revealed morpho-structural and textural differentiations of forested, deforested and reforested areas in development regions with dominant mountain relief and high hills (more forested and compact organization) in comparison to the development regions dominated by plains or low hills (less forested, more fragmented with small and isolated clusters). Our analysis used the fractal analysis that has the advantage of analyzing the entire image, rather than studying local information, thereby enabling quantification of the uniformity, fragmentation, heterogeneity and homogeneity of forests. [Termes IGN] valeur économiqueRésumé : (auteur) The paper aims to explore whether long run benefits can be obtained through the sustainable management of forest ecosystems within protected areas when compared to immediate benefits of doing business as usual. Total economic value of forest ecosystems services is estimated using commonly used valuation techniques under the innovative umbrella of the Sector Scenario Assessment methodology, introducing sectorial focus, alternative management scenarios and time dimension to the evaluation process. The methodology is based on comparing two management scenarios, Business As Usual (BAU) and Sustainable Ecosystem Management (SEM). They were designed by consulting with stakeholders involved in protected areas management, research and regulating or are main beneficiaries of ecosystem services. The economic indicators determined by using the models defined by those scenarios for the next 30 years, results of a complex data collection process and application of appropriate valuation techniques, show that, after 30 years, forestry activities under SEM exceed the values of the BAU scenario in terms of added value to the economy. For the forestry activities in the Maramures Mountains Natural Park, the estimated present value of provisioning ecosystem services is EUR 32.4 million for the BAU scenario, and EUR 32.0 million for the SEM scenario. By focusing not only on forestry related but also on other sectors related ecosystem services, the paper may open doors for considering more complex incentive/financing mechanisms that helps secure biodiversity and ecosystem services more broadly. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is the prevailing tree species of mesic forests in Central Europe. Increasing summer temperatures and decreasing precipitation, as climate change scenarios predict, may, however, negatively influence beech growth and induce a shift to more thermophilous forest communities. Temperatures as expected in the future for western Central Europe are currently found in parts of western Romania. In light of this climate analogy we investigated forest vegetation as an indicator for future vegetation changes in five regions of western Romania representing a climatic gradient. We related species composition to climate variables and examined if tree and understorey species composition respond similarly to the climatic gradient. We further analysed if tree species occurrences correspond with their modelled distance to the rear niche edge. We found evidence for climatic effects on vegetation composition among regions as well as within deciduous and pine forests, respectively. This underlines that vegetation composition is a useful indicator for environmental change. Tree and understorey species compositions were closely linked showing that community-based characterization of forest stands can provide additional information on tree species suitability along environmental gradients. Both, vegetation composition and a climatic marginality index demonstrate the rear niche edge occurrence of beech in the studied sites of Romania and can predict the site suitability for different tree species. While vegetation surveys indicate Quercus petraea to be associated to moderately mesic forests, the marginality index suggested an inner niche position of sessile oak along the climatic gradient. Phytosociological relevés that differentiate between subspecies (or microspecies) of sessile oak with differing habitat requirements should be considered to complement national forest inventories and species distribution maps when modelling rear distribution edges. We conclude that climate driven forest vegetation composition in western Romania is a suitable analogon and may indicate future forest development in western Central Europe.
