[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The area occupied by plastic-covered greenhouses has undergone rapid growth in recent years, currently exceeding 500,000 ha worldwide. Due to the vast amount of input (water, fertilisers, fuel, etc.) required, and output of different agricultural wastes (vegetable, plastic, chemical, etc.), the environmental impact of this type of production system can be serious if not accompanied by sound and sustainable territorial planning. For this, the new generation of satellites which provide very high resolution imagery, such as QuickBird and IKONOS can be useful. In this study, one QuickBird and one IKONOS satellite image have been used to cover the same area under similar circumstances. The aim of this work was an exhaustive comparison of QuickBird vs. IKONOS images in land-cover detection. In terms of plastic greenhouse mapping, comparative tests were designed and implemented, each with separate objectives. Firstly, the Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) was applied using five different approaches combining R, G, B, NIR, and panchromatic bands. The combinations of the bands used, significantly influenced some of the indexes used to classify quality in this work. Furthermore, the quality classification of the QuickBird image was higher in all cases than that of the IKONOS image. Secondly, texture features derived from the panchromatic images at different window sizes and with different grey levels were added as a fifth band to the R, G, B, NIR images to carry out the MLC. The inclusion of texture information in the classification did not improve the classification quality. For classifications with texture information, the best accuracies were found in both images for mean and angular second moment texture parameters. The optimum window size in these texture parameters was 3*3 for IK images, while for QB images it depended on the quality index studied, but the optimum window size was around 15*15. With regard to the grey level, the optimum was 128. Thus, the optimum texture parameter depended on the main objective of the image classification. If the main classification goal is to minimize the number of pixels wrongly classified, the mean texture parameter should be used, whereas if the main classification goal is to minimize the unclassified pixels the angular second moment texture parameter should be used. On the whole, both QuickBird and IKONOS images offered promising results in classifying plastic greenhouses. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Research in the area of 3D city modelling from remote sensed data greatly developed in recent years with an emphasis on systems dealing with the detection and representation of man-made objects, such as buildings and streets. While these systems produce accurate representations of urban environments, they ignore information about the vegetation component of a city. This paper presents a complete image analysis system which, from high-resolution color infrared (CIR) digital images, and a Digital Surface Model (DSM), extracts, segments and classifies vegetation in high density urban areas, with very high reliability. The process starts with the extraction of all vegetation areas using a supervised classification system based on a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. The result of this first step is further on used to separate trees from lawns using texture criteria computed on the DSM. Tree crown borders are identified through a robust region growing algorithm based on tree-shape criteria. A SVM classifier gives the species class for each tree region previously identified. This classification is used to enhance the appearance of 3D city models by a realistic representation of vegetation according to the vegetation land use, shape and tree species. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) An approach for tree species classification in urban areas from high resolution colour infrared (CIR) aerial images and the corresponding Digital Surface Model (DSM) is described in this paper. The proposed method is a supervised classification one based on a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. Texture features from the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) are computed to form feature vectors for both per-pixel and per-region classification approaches. The two approaches are presented and results obtained are evaluated and compared both against each other and also against a manual defined ground truth. To perform tree species classification on highdensity urban area images, trees must previously be segmented into individual objects. All intermediary methods developed to segment individual trees will also be shortly described. Tree parameters (height, crown diameter) are estimated from the DSM. These parameters together with the tree species information are used for a 3D realistic modelling of the trees in urban environments. Results of the described system are presented for a typical scene. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (auteur) Updating 2D databases has become a crucial issue in most mapping agencies. Such a work traditionally starts out with a change detection phase. A subsequent update phase is then carried out to register changes in the up-to-date database. The first phase is by far the most costly and plodding, as it has until now required field or visual inspection (of orthophotos). The main goal of this paper is to present a new method for detecting changes in the building layer of a 2D cadastral database. This method aims at giving potential changes to a human operator for subsequent validation and update registration. In this paper, we propose a new workflow for the change detection process, by splitting it into 2 separate steps. The first step consists in verifying automatically buildings through a hypothesizeand verify process: the initial description of the database is used to guide the change detection process. The second step consists in extracting new buildings from geometric considerations. In this paper, the method is tested and assessed in a densely built-up area. A specific methodology is firstly employed to estimate the best parameters to use in the system and also to characterise its performance. Results are secondly assessed and show the high potential of our system in such a context.
