[Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) The three-dimensional (3-D) structure of forests, especially the vertical structure, is an important parameter of forest ecosystem modeling for monitoring ecological change. Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) provides scene reflectivity estimation of vegetation along elevation coordinates. Due to the advantages of super-resolution imaging and a small number of measurements, distribution compressive sensing (DCS) inversion techniques for polarimetric SAR tomography were successfully developed and applied. This paper addresses the 3-D imaging of forested areas based on the framework of DCS using fully polarimetric (FP) multibaseline SAR interferometric (MB-InSAR) tomography at the P-band. A new DCS-based FP TomoSAR method is proposed: a new wavelet-based distributed compressive sensing FP TomoSAR method (FP-WDCS TomoSAR method). The method takes advantage of the joint sparsity between polarimetric channel signals in the wavelet domain to jointly inverse the reflectivity profiles in each channel. The method not only allows high accuracy and super-resolution imaging with a low number of acquisitions, but can also obtain the polarization information of the vertical structure of forested areas. The effectiveness of the techniques for polarimetric SAR tomography is demonstrated using FP P-band airborne datasets acquired by the ONERA SETHI airborne system over a test site in Paracou, French Guiana. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) Methods to estimate forest biomass change have been investigated using experimental P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the recent airborne campaigns BioSAR 2007 and BioSAR 2010 conducted over a hemiboreal test site in southern Sweden. Regression models based on backscatter change were developed using reference biomass change maps derived from high-density laser scanning data. Different regression models were developed for linear, square root, and logarithmic biomass change scales. The models were compared to the change maps based on laser data using twofold cross-validation, and estimation errors were evaluated using six 80 m by 80 m plots with detailed in situ measurements. The results indicate that the root-mean-square error of biomass change estimates based on P-band SAR backscatter data is about 15% or 20 t/ha. This suggests that not only clear-cuts but also growth and thinning can be measured. Simulations were performed in order to evaluate the possibility of using a spaceborne P-band SAR for measurements of forest biomass change. The simulations show that, with 64 equivalent number of looks (ENL) and a 50% change in biomass, it is possible to correctly indicate whether the forest has gained or lost biomass. Similarly, for a biomass loss of more than 75%, a correct indication of the sign of biomass change can be achieved with only 8 ENL. First is the basic concepts, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data sources and the different algorithms documented in the literature, primarily focusing on persistent scatterers. In the second part, the techniques are compared in order to establish more linkage in terms of the variability of their applications, strength and validation of the interpreted results. Also, current issues in sensor and algorithm development are discussed. The study identified six existing A-DInSAR algorithms used for monitoring various deformation types. Generally, reports of their performance indicate that all the techniques are capable of measuring deformation phenomena at varying spatial resolution with high level of accuracy. However, their usability in suburban and vegetated areas yields poor results, compared to urbanized areas, due to inadequate permanent features that could provide sufficient coherent point targets. Meanwhile, there is continuous development in sensors and algorithms to expand the applicability domain of the technology for a wide range of deformable surfaces and displacement patterns with higher precision. On the sensor side, most of the latest SAR sensors employ longer wavelength (X and P bands) to increase the penetrating power of the signal and two other sensors (ALOS-2 PALSA-2 and SENTINEL-1) are scheduled to be launched in 2013. Researchers are investigating the possibility of using single-pass sensors with different look angles for SAR data collection. With these, it is expected that more data will be available for various applications. Algorithms such as corner reflector interferometry SAR, along track interferometry, liqui-InSAR, and squeeSAR are emerging to increase reliable estimation of deformation from different surfaces. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Analyzing the precision of vegetation height estimation with compact (i.e., single transmit instead of dual transmit) polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) with the homogeneous random volume over ground model can help justify the use of this type of radar rather than using the full PolInSAR. However, since compact PolInSAR provides less information than full PolInSAR, a loss of precision in the vegetation height estimation is expected, which can depend on the single transmit polarization. The adaptation of the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) derived for full PolInSAR in our earlier work to compact PolInSAR measurement provides a general methodology to characterize this loss of precision. Indeed, the CRB is a lower bound of the variance of unbiased estimators that does not depend on the choice of a particular estimation method. We illustrate this methodology for P-band measurements with three synthetic examples chosen for their variability of polarimetric responses. For these examples, it is shown that there can exist a large set of transmit polarizations for which the loss of precision described by the CRB is small (smaller than a factor 2) although there also exist transmit polarizations for which the loss can be large (about a factor 100). This loss of precision is compared with the large dependency of the precision to the vegetation height estimation that can be observed with the vegetation height (more than a factor 100 in the precision described by the CRB) when all the other parameters of the vegetation, ground, and radar system are constant. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we discuss the design concepts and preliminary results relating to the European Space Agency's ground-based campaign TropiScat, whose main goal is to evaluate temporal coherence at P-band in a tropical forest in quad-polarization, considering temporal lags ranging from hours to months and at different heights within the vegetation layer. The experiment has been successfully set up and operated since October 2011 at the Paracou field station, French Guiana, where the equipment was installed on top of the 55-m high Guyaflux Tower to illuminate the forest below. The system consists of a vector network analyzer connected to 20 antennas through a switchbox, which allows the use of any of them either as a transmitter or as a receiver. Vertical imaging and fully polarimetric capabilities are achieved by operating the 20 antennas in a multistatic fashion, resulting in an equivalent monostatic array consisting of 15 phase centers displaced along the vertical direction in each polarization. Such a design allows unambiguous imaging of the vegetation while yielding a minimum distance between nearby antennas on the order of 0.8 m, so as to minimize coupling effects. The equipment allows the gathering of signals with the tomographic array within a few minutes, resulting in the possibility to produce a tomographic image of the forest with a temporal sampling of 15 min. System calibration and validation was performed by employing a 2-m trihedral reflector and a rotating dihedral reflector. This allowed the evaluation of the system pulse response in all polarizations and also assessment of the extent of tower motions. As a result, tomographic images have been generated from 500 (P-band) to 900 MHz in all polarizations. Results from real data acquired in Fall 2011 confirm the feasibility of carrying out reliable coherence measurements for the whole duration of the campaign.
