[Termes IGN] transformation orthogonaleRésumé : (Auteur) The present paper proposes an automated approach to estimate the aerosol reflectance at the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) red channel. The aerosol dominant pixels were separated through two orthogonal transforms. The aerosol reflectance ratio at these pixels was esti-mated through regression. The results are validated with in situ measurements. The retrieved water-leaving reflectance matched the modelled values with a relative error below 45%. The smallest error values were at the stations with the closest sampling time to image acquisition. However, a weak correlation of 16% was found between water-leaving reflectance and aerosol signals, This suggested that these errors could be attributed to the spatial and temporal variability between the two sampling methods (ship measurement and pixel reflectance). [Termes IGN] spectroradiométrieRésumé : (Auteur) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been widely applied in optical remote sensing. However, it has been demonstrated that NDVI is still partially affected by atmospheric path scattering and bidirectional (illumination and viewing geometry) effects. In this paper we present the benefit of using a bidirectional NDVI, and we discuss the problems in using the maximum NDVI composite method. Based on the assumption that a clear day has a larger NDVI value and a cloudy day has a smaller NDVI value (smaller reflectance in the nearinfrared band and larger reflectance in red band due to atmospheric path scattering), the ratio of squared observed NDVI values and calculated NDVI values is used as a weight in our inversion method. The calculated NDVI values are derived from previously inverted bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs). The inversion process will loop until all weights converge. Our research on the early Terra/MODIS data using a semiempirical kerneldriven BRDF model (the RossThickLiTransit model) shows that this new method can improve inversion results whenever some cloudy pixels are not filtered out. As cloud detection and subpixel cloudiness are always a problem, this technique should still be very useful in improving the quality of BRDF inversion. [Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) Digital data from four multi spectral sensors having different spatial resolution and spectral channel, LISS-III, LISS-II, LISS-I and WiFS acquired from two Indian Remote Sensing satellite platform ( IRS 1B, IRS IC) were evaluated for wheat crop classification accuracy over central India. Classification accuracy was assessed at different spatial resolutions using common red and near infrared (nir) bands in the above four sensors data as well as simulated intermediate resolution data. It was observed that accuracy improved with better spatial resolution and there was a considerable increases in accuracy from 188 to 144 in resolution and from 72 in up to 23 m resolution with the modest increase in the intermediate range. Inclusion of the MIR band, and choice of proper acquisition date resulted in significantly higher crop classification accuracies. The results have been evaluated against the future sensor planned on IRS Platform. We describe a new remote sensing technique for identifying inundated areas based on the properties of the glitterthe strong, angular signature reflection that is characteristic of surface water and uncharacteristic of other cover types. We discriminated three cover types vegetation emergent above inundated soils, open water, and noninundated cover types from analysis of directional data collected in the red spectral band by the airborne POLDER (polarization and directionality of earth's reflectance) sensor. We found that values of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) decreased dramatically in the glitter direction, providing an indication of surface water. Application of our new technique holds promise for mapping the seasonal and interannual extent of inundation, a key descriptor of wetlands hydrology.
