[Termes IGN] rapport signal sur bruitRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a critical review of the hyperspectral splitting of the solar reflected radiation acquired by hyperspectral imaging sensors. The bandwidth used in the range from 2.0-2.5 um by many hyperspectral sensors sometimes is too narrow for land cover classification. In fact, hyperspectral imagers often suffer from low signal-to-noise (SNR) in the short-wave infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, resulting in noisy image collection. This paper presents a new methodological approach to the splitting of the solar reflected radiation, called the "superspectral approach" It is based on the principle of increasing the channel bandwidth by increasing the number of wavelengths, to build synthetic spectral bands with higher SNR. The methodology has been applied to the Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer (MIVIS) sensor, an airborne hyperspectral scanner used for environmental remote sensing applications in Italy. Interesting results have been achieved in crop classification, processing the Cordenons survey carried out in August 2001 in the northeastern part of Italy. The Spectral Angle Mapper algorithm was used for classification because it is insensitive to shadows. For accuracy assessment, the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (k) were calculated and used in the comparison. Using the superspectral approach, an increment in the overall accuracy of about 42 % and an increment in the kappa coefficient of about 51 % were obtained in comparison to the classification accuracy of unprocessed original MIVIS data (OA = 41.21, k = 0.35). A second case study is presented using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's experimental hyperspectral imager HYPERION. Data acquired over the lake of Garda (Italy) in October 2002 was processed with the superspectral approach. Comparing the simulated HYPERION superspectral bands with the original data, SNR improvements are achieved in the shortwave infrared region (from 0.7-54.2 for 2.012-pm wavelength and from 0.7-64.5 for the 2.365-pm wavelength). The methodology proposed is sensor independent and can be applied to any of the hyperspectral sensors currently available. A major aim of the experiments was examination of existing algorithms for soil moisture retrieval from active and passive microwave remote sensors under high vegetation water content conditions. The data obtained from the passive and active L and S band sensor (PALS) along with physical variables measured by in situ sampling have been used in this study to demonstrate the sensitivity of the instrument to soil moisture and perform soil moisture retrieval using statistical regression and physical modeling techniques. The land cover conditions in the region studied were predominantly soybean and corn crops with average vegetation water contents ranging from 0 to ~ 5 kg/m2. The PALS microwave sensitivity to soil moisture under these vegetation conditions was investigated for both passive and active measurements. The performance of the PALS instrument and retrieval algorithms has been analyzed, indicating soil moisture retrieval errors of approximately 0.04 g/g gravimetric soil moisture. Statistical regression techniques have been shown to perform satisfactorily with soil moisture retrieval error of around 0.05 g/g gravimetric soil moisture. The retrieval errors were higher for the corn than for the soybean fields due to the higher vegetation water content of the corn crops. However, the algorithms performed satisfactorily over the full range of vegetation conditions. [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (Auteur) Although satellite remote sensing techniques have been widely implemented for a variety of applications, using either single or time-series images, few studies have explicitly considered atmospheric effects, and how they can most effectively be minimized. Despite the considerable number of available atmospheric correction algorithms, there is little literature concerning their relative merits. Over water bodies, atmospheric effects account for the majority of the at-satellite measured radiance in the visible bands, and therefore targets of this type provide an opportunity for assessing the effectiveness of the different methods available. This paper reports a study of atmospheric effects and their correction, using multi-spectral satellite remote sensing data for an area to the west of London that includes eight large water reservoirs and a major international airport (Heathrow). Through comparisons of reflectance within a time series of 12 Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images, the overall impact of atmospheric contributions is shown. The available atmospheric correction literature is then reviewed, and the methods applied to the satellite imagery of the reservoirs. The results are compared with reflectances acquired using a field spectro-radiometer. A critical appraisal of the results, and of problems encountered in applying the various methods, leads to an evaluation of their value in practice. These constitute the first comprehensive hotspot measurements at the scale of a continent. The retrieval technique requires that the hotspot characteristics at small angular scales are approximately invariant over a region of about 50km in extent, but accommodates pixel-to-pixel variations in the other characteristics, of the angular signature. Continental maps of the amplitude and half-width of the hotspot, in two spectral bands, are presented for two 41-day orbit cycles in different seasons and compared with a vegetation map. The half-widths are predominantly in the range 0.5°-1.5°, with no systematic difference between the 670 nm and 865 nm bands, and show little spatial structure. The maps of hotspot amplitude display significant spatial structure that corresponds closely to the vegetation map. Generally, areas of trees and tall shrubs are characterized by low hotspot amplitudes, while cropland, grassland and areas of low shrubs have high hotspot amplitudes. The evergreen broadleaf eucalypt forests are notable in that the amplitude is low at 670 nm and high at 865 nm. [Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) In the atmospheric correction algorithm for Sea-viewing Wide Fieldof-view Sensor, the effects of the spectral variation of the aerosol radiance contributions at the two near-infrared (NIR) bands are estimated directly from sensor-measured radiance. The aerosol effects at the NIR are then extrapolated into, the visible through a process of aerosol model selection from evaluation of the NIR single-scattering epsilon value, which is defined as the ratio of the single-scattering aerosol reflectance between two NIR bands. The aerosol radiance contribution at the visible wavelengths is then removed. In this paper, a slightly different approach in the aerosol model selection and extrapolation, i.e. using the NIR multiple-scattering epsilon instead of the single-scattering epsilon, is examined. The NIR multiple-scattering epsilon is the ratio of the aerosol multiple-scattering reflectance between two NIR wavelengths. Simulations show that, in general, both methods give comparable results. Statistically, more than 95% of cases in the retrieved ocean colour spectrum are within required accuracy for both methods. For clear atmosphere, however, the results of the atmospheric correction using the single-scattering epsilon method usually performed slightly better than the multiple-scattering epsilon method. On the other hand, for the large aerosol optical thickness the multiple-scattering epsilon method has slightly better retrievals for the Tropospheric aerosols. Some detailed analyses and discussions are provided to explain differences in these two approaches for extrapolating and retrieving the aerosol effects in the visible.
