[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates the retrieval of soil moisture in the top 5-cm layer at 3-km spatial resolution using L-band dual-copolarized Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data that mapped the globe every three days from mid-April to early July, 2015. Surface soil moisture retrievals using radar observations have been challenging in the past due to complicating factors of surface roughness and vegetation scattering. Here, physically based forward models of radar scattering for individual vegetation types are inverted using a time-series approach to retrieve soil moisture while correcting for the effects of static roughness and dynamic vegetation. Compared with the past studies in homogeneous field scales, this paper performs a stringent test with the satellite data in the presence of terrain slope, subpixel heterogeneity, and vegetation growth. The retrieval process also addresses any deficiencies in the forward model by removing any time-averaged bias between model and observations and by adjusting the strength of vegetation contributions. The retrievals are assessed at 14 core validation sites representing a wide range of global soil and vegetation conditions over grass, pasture, shrub, woody savanna, corn, wheat, and soybean fields. The predictions of the forward models used agree with SMAP measurements to within 0.5 dB unbiased-root-mean-square error (ubRMSE) and -0.05 dB (bias) for both copolarizations. Soil moisture retrievals have an accuracy of 0.052 m3/m3 ubRMSE, -0.015 m3/m3 bias, and a correlation of 0.50, compared to in situ measurements, thus meeting the accuracy target of 0.06 m3/m3 ubRMSE. The successful retrieval demonstrates the feasibility of a physically based time series retrieval with L-band SAR data for characterizing soil moisture over diverse conditions of soil moisture, surface roughness, and vegetation. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Recently, classification of urban area based on multi-sensor fusion has been widely investigated. In this paper, the potential of using visible (VIS) and thermal infrared (TIR) hyperspectral images fusion for classification of urban area is evaluated. For this purpose, comprehensive spatial-spectral feature space is generated which includes vegetation index, differential morphological profile (DMP), attribute profile (AP), texture, geostatistical features, structural feature set (SFS) and local statistical descriptors from both datasets in addition to original datasets. Although Support Vector Machine (SVM) is an appropriate tool in the classification of high dimensional feature space, its performance is significantly affected by its parameters and feature space. Cuckoo search (CS) optimization algorithm with mixed binary-continuous coding is proposed for feature selection and SVM parameter determination simultaneously. Moreover, the significance of each selected feature category in the classification of a specific object is verified. Accuracy assessment on two subsets shows that stacking of VIS and TIR bands can improve the classification performance to 87 percent and 82 percent for two subsets, compare to VIS image (72 percent and 80 percent) and TIR image (50 percent and 56 percent). However, the optimum results obtained based on the proposed method which gains 94 percent and 92 percent. Furthermore, results show that using TIR beside VIS image improves classification accuracy of roads and buildings in urban area. [Termes IGN] TaïwanRésumé : (auteur) We focus herein on the location, characterization and the quantification of the most active structural feature of Taiwan: the Longitudinal Valley Fault that corresponds to the suture in between the Philippine and Eurasian Plates. In order to determine and monitor its present inter-seismic deformation, we focus on the Pingting Terraces area, situated in the South Longitudinal Valley (Eastern Taiwan). We first determine the structural geometry issued from both photo-interpretation deduced from new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) high-resolution Digital Terrain Model data that we acquired (34.78 km2 with 7.73 cm ground sampling distance), combined with geological field work. In order to characterize and quantify the present deformational patterns over the Pingting terraces, we used an InSAR time series Interferometry algorithm (MT-InSAR) applied to nine L-band SAR images from ALOS satellite acquired over the period 2007–2010. The unprecedented density of measurements (about 120 points per km2 for a total of 6,400 points) gives a continuous overview of the inter-seismic shallow deformation. The structural geometry combined with the mean velocity map (MT-InSAR) reveals two clear active faults situated above the scarps of the Pingting terraces and responsible for up to 7 and 20 mm/yr velocity offset along the radar line of sight. A temporal analysis of the deformation is performed with one measurement at each SAR acquisition date, giving major improvements in the characterization and quantification of the Longitudinal Valley active Fault trace. [Termes IGN] vitesse radialeRésumé : (Auteur) In order to enhance the performance of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication (SAR-GMTI) systems, multichannel systems with large and preferably nonuniform baselines are required. In this paper, SAR-GMTI algorithms for multichannel SAR systems, which we call multichannel displaced phase center antenna (DPCA), multichannel along track interferometry (ATI), and multichannel DPCA-ATI, are presented. Multichannel DPCA is a deterministic algorithm for clutter and azimuth ambiguity suppression. It successfully suppresses not only uniform azimuth ambiguities but also nonuniform isolated ones, since it does not require uniform clutter covariance assumption as adaptive algorithms do. Multichannel ATI and multichannel DPCA-ATI are the algorithms for target radial velocity estimation. Both of them reduce the target radial velocity ambiguities, which arise with the long baseline systems, by exploiting the multiple receive channel signals. And multichannel DPCA-ATI further achieves robust performance to clutter influence by suppressing the clutter and the azimuth ambiguity in advance. The performances of the proposed algorithms are shown through airborne Ku-band three-channel SAR experiments. It is shown that the multichannel DPCA suppresses strong azimuth ambiguity up to more than 20 dB, and the accuracy of the radial velocity estimation of the multichannel DPCA-ATI is on the order of 0.1 m/s. Furthermore, statistical performance analysis is presented to discuss the potential performance on the spaceborne system. [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) Many hyperspectral image processing algorithms (e.g., detection, classification, endmember extraction, and so on) are generally designed with the assumption of no spectral or spatial correlation in noise. However, previous studies have shown the presence of nonnegligible correlation between the noise samples in different spectral bands, especially between noises in adjacent bands, and that most of the well-known intrinsic dimension estimation algorithms give poor estimates in the presence of correlated noise. Thus, there is a need to tackle the specific case of spectrally correlated noise for noise estimation. We show, in this paper, that the commonly employed hyperspectral noise estimation algorithm based on regression residuals can be significantly affected by spectrally correlated noise and we suggest a modified approach that proves to be robust to noise correlation. Furthermore, the proposed method improves the noise variance estimates in comparison to the classic residual method even for the case of uncorrelated noise. Simulation results show that the estimation error is reduced at times by a factor of 5 when there is high spectral correlation in the noise. Our proposed per-pixel noise estimator requires an estimate of the noise covariance matrix, and for this, we also propose a method to estimate the noise covariance matrix. Simulation results demonstrate that the per-pixel noise estimates obtained via the use of estimated noise statistics are almost as good as those obtained via use of the true statistics.
