[Termes IGN] surface de la merRésumé : (auteur) Among the various remote sensing technologies that have been applied to monitor oil spills on the sea surface, passive ultraviolet (UV) imaging is a controversial one that has raised some disputes in the community of oil spill remote sensing. As a result, the research and applications of oil spill detection using passive UV imaging have not been as developed as other methods. In order to clarify some existing questions on oil spill detection using passive UV remote sensing technology, this paper discusses the needs of thin oil film detection, examines the feasibility of thin oil film detection using passive UV imaging through field experiments under controlled conditions and validates it with the UV imagery derived from the airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) observation of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Two types of fully automatic models are designed to extract the thin oil films on the water surface: (1) a binary classification model based on an adaptive threshold; (2) an unsupervised image segmentation model based on image clustering and greyscale histogram analysis. The two models are tested on the UV imagery obtained through both field experiments and AVIRIS observations. The results indicate that the binary classification model can extract the thin oil films with reasonable accuracy under stable imaging conditions, while the unsupervised image clustering model can robustly detect the thin oil films at the cost of higher computational complexity. These results infer that passive UV imaging is an effective way to detect thin oil films and could be applied to provide early warning at the beginning stage of oil spills and reduce further damage. It may also be applied as a supplementary method for oil spill detection to achieve comprehensive oil spill monitoring. [Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (auteur) Underwater ultraviolet radiation (UVR), which plays a significant role in photobiological and photochemical processes, is one of the key factors in marine ecosystems. A new algorithm KpcaUV, based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and multiple linear regression (MLR), was proposed in this study for the retrieval of the UVR diffuse attenuation coefficient Kd(λ) from remote sensing reflectance Rrs(λ) in the global ocean. KPCA can be applied in all areas that principal components analysis (PCA) can be used. More importantly, KPCA can help mapping data into high dimensions and reducing the nonlinearity between inputs and outputs, which will improve the performance and robustness of algorithms when deriving large dynamic ranges parameters. Compared with SeaUVc, which is one of the most successful Kd(λ) retrieval algorithms in UVR, the results showed that KpcaUV (with R2 : 0.970 and RMSE: 14.0%) performed similar to SeaUVc (with R2 : 0.963 and RMSE: 15.6%) when implemented with high-quality data. Nevertheless, KpcaUV was more robust and consistent than SeaUVc when implemented on the satellite images with different levels of quality control. The RMSD of SeaUVc had a significant reduction from 26.8% (QA ≥ 0.6) to 12.7% (QA = 1.0), and the RMSD of KpcaUV varied less than SeaUVc from 14.6% (QA ≥ 0.6) to 10.1% (QA = 1). Hence, considering its good nonlinear-problem-solving ability and robustness when applied to multiple satellites, KpcaUV proposed by this study can be used to obtain Kd(380) for the continuous observation of the large area. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The payload on board the FengYun 3 (FY-3) satellite series has been providing critical observations to the Earth, and the observation data have been processed and distributed to various users by the corresponding ground application system. In this paper, the FY-3 payload and its future development plan are presented, and its ground system is introduced. The major characteristics of the FY-3 instruments and the requirement on the instruments for major applications are discussed as well. There are nine new instruments, including the Microwave Temperature Sounder (MWTS), Microwave Humidity Sounder (MWHS), Infrared Atmospheric Sounder (IRAS), Medium-Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI), Microwave Radiation Imager (MWRI), Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Sounder, Total Ozone Unit, Solar Irradiation Monitor, and Earth Radiation Measurement. The data quality from the IRAS, MWTS, MWHS, and MWRI has proved to be good, and according to our evaluation at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the data have a very high availability. The MERSI has 20 visible (VIS) and infrared (IR) channels, of which three are VIS channels with a 250-m spatial resolution, one is a near-IR channel with a 250-m spatial resolution, and one is a long-wave IR channel with a 250-m spatial resolution. The global data at a 250-m spatial resolution are very useful in weather, disaster, and environmental monitoring. Compared with the ground observations, the ozone products derived from the FY-3 series are highly accurate. We have completed the calibration and validation of these sensors and most products. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of the paper is to carry on methodological development for retrieving forest parameters from medium-footprint lidar signals and for assessing the performance of different sampling strategies. The 2.4 m footprint lidar prototype (a profiler instrument using an ultraviolet laser) was flown above two different maritime pine stands: a young plantation (10 years old) and a mature, semi-natural stand (55 years old), both in the Landes forest, France. The vertical distribution of lidar measurements was studied for retrieving forest height parameters (mean total height, mean crown height and top height). The processing algorithm was based on an aggregation of successive signals followed by the correction of the signal attenuation along the travel through the vegetation. The performance of different sampling strategies was assessed by comparing the results for the full dataset (several fight lines over the stands) and for only a data subset (one flight line). In addition, the horizontal distribution of height measurements was studied for identifying the planting pattern of the stands and assessing the tree spacing of the semi-natural parcel, using geostatistics. We obtained a submetric estimation error (lidar – reference) of 0.2 m on the mean total height in the young stand (-0.7 m in the mature stand), a bias of -0.3 m (-0.3 m) on the mean crown height measurement and of 0.6 m (-1.0 m) on the top height. The planting pattern was also successfully identified, and the distance between trees was assessed in agreement with ground measurements. Having demonstrated its ability to assess forest structure, even with a unique flight line, the lidar prototype seems to be a valuable sensor for performing fast forest inventory at regional scale. In addition, this sensor opens the way to the development of bi-functional lidar for both atmosphere and vegetation remote sensing. [Termes IGN] Ultra Léger MotoriséRésumé : (Auteur) Un effort conjoint de l'Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (LMD, LSCE et LATMOS), du Cemagref et du Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), a conduit à mettre en œuvre le nouveau prototype Lidar Atmosphérique Ultraviolet Aéroporté (LAUV(A)) afin d'étudier la répartition verticale de la canopée forestière dans la région des Landes, aux abords du bassin d'Arcachon et de Mimizan. Ce lidar compact et polyvalent embarqué sur ULM permet d'effectuer des mesures avec une maniabilité inégalée, de disposer d'une grande capacité d'adaptation des paramètres instrumentaux (divergence, champ de vue, énergie émise, résolutions verticale et horizontale, angle de visée) et d'effectuer des plans de vol complexes. L'utilisation d'une longueur d'onde dans l'ultra-violet, à 355 nm, permet l'émission d'impulsions énergétiques (16 mJ à 20 Hz) tout en conservant la sécurité oculaire. Les principaux résultats de cette première expérience sont orientés vers une caractérisation statistique des structures verticales (hauteur et distribution verticale de la canopée et sous-bois) des parcelles arborées. Trois parcelles d'environ 500 x 500 m2, composées principalement de pins maritimes de plusieurs âges, ont été échantillonnées suivant différentes configurations expérimentales. Les résultats obtenus constituent des travaux amont nécessaires à la préparation de futures missions lidar spatiales dédiées à l'étude des canopées forestières à l'échelle globale.
