[Termes IGN] Wyoming (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Seasonal snow melt in the Wind River Range, Wyoming, has been ending earlier over the last several decades leaving the region to rely more on supplemental melt water from mountain glaciers. This leads to the necessity of understanding recent glacial changes. This study uses elevation data from 1966, 2006 and 2011 to calculate surface elevation and volume changes that have occurred on Continental Glacier. Results indicate a mean volume change of -0.034 1 0.02 km3 and surface elevation change of -0.36 1 0.19 m y-1 between 1966 and 2006. Detailed spatial analysis shows that the glacier is divided into two sections which are thinning at different rates (lower section: -0.0610.19 m y-1; upper section: -0.51 1 0.19 m y-1). The upper section has experienced 97% of the thinning (or 742.5 * 103 m3 of melt water equivalent per year) and increased its rate since 2006 by 27.5%. [Termes IGN] matrice de covarianceRésumé : (Auteur) The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission measures the Earth’s gravity field since March 2002. We propose a new filtering procedure for post-processing GRACE-based monthly gravity field solutions provided in the form of spherical harmonic coefficients. The procedure is tuned for the optimal estimation of linear trends and other signal components that show a systematic behavior over long time intervals. The key element of the developed methodology is the statistically optimal Wiener-type filter which makes use of the full covariance matrices of noise and signal. The developed methodology is applied to determine the mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet, both per drainage system and integrated, as well as the mass balance of the ice caps on the islands surrounding Greenland. The estimations are performed for three 2-year time intervals (2003–2004, 2005–2006, and 2007–2008), as well as for the 6-year time interval (2003–2008). The study confirms a significant difference in the behavior of the drainage systems over time. The average 6-year rate of mass loss in Greenland is estimated as 165 + 15 Gt/year. The rate of mass loss of the ice caps on Ellesmere Island (together with Devon Island), Baffin Island, Iceland, and Svalbard is found to be 22 + 4, 21 + 6, 17 + 9, and 6 + 2 Gt/year, respectively. All these estimates are corrected for the effect of glacial isostatic adjustment. [Termes IGN] SvalbardRésumé : (Auteur) Arctic glaciers are reliable indicators of global climate changes. However, monitoring snow and ice dynamics in Arctic regions is challenging: some fast but key events can be missed since they are short in time but significant in the hydrological budget. In the context of long term monitoring with high temporal and spatial resolutions of the snow cover dynamics, automated digital cameras were installed around the Austre Lovénbreen glacier basin (Spitsbergen, Norway, 79°N). Despite data losses due to rough weather conditions and control electronics failure, a dataset of 2411 pictures (out of an expected 3294) was gathered over a 1 year hydrological period to assess the snow coverage of the glacier as a function of time with daily resolution. 73% of the total number of expected images was thus recorded, with gaps associated with temporary electronics or data storage failure. The six camera stations oriented so as to observe the glacier itself provide a surface coverage of 96%. Furthermore, geometric corrections of the pictures, using reference ground control points located on the glacier through GPS receivers, yield a quantitative information from initially qualitative images. Projecting the resulting mosaic of the images gathered from six cameras on a GIS allows for the precise monitoring of ice-related processes, and especially the snow coverage evolution over time. This paper summarizes our current understanding of such dynamics, based on the analysis of daily mosaics of images allowing for the observation of both long term evolution on the seasonal scale and the short term events on a weekly scale. Such results demonstrated over one typical full hydrological season (April–October 2009) that snow coverage evolves following discrete steps, either due to water precipitation or warm events, with a snow coverage ranging from 100% (april) to 37% (September). [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, there has been increased utilization of fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) data to study glaciated terrain features for glaciological and climate change modelling. This article is concerned with more accurate results and appropriate analysis of POLSAR data over a highly rugged glaciated area in Himalayan region. For this purpose, the modified Yamaguchi four-component scattering power decomposition (4-CSPD) method with a rotation concept of 3 x 3 coherency matrix [T] about line of sight is evaluated. It has been found that the modified Yamaguchi 4-CSPD method significantly improved the decomposition results as compared with the original 4-CSPD by minimizing the cross-polarized Horizontal-Vertical (HV) components. This modified 4-CSPD leads to enhancement in the double bounce scattering and surface scattering components and also avoids the overestimation problem in the volume scattering component as compared with the original 4-CSPD from the sloped terrain. The significant reductions of the negative power occurrence in the surface scattering (3.9%) and the double bounce scattering (19.7%) components have also been noticed as compared with the original 4-CSPD method over the glaciated area in this part of the Indian Himalaya.
