In the study of geographic phenomena, a distinct form of replicability is particularly important – whether a result obtained in one geographic context applies in another geographic context. However, the laws of geography suggest that it may be challenging to use replication to assess the credibility of findings across space and to identify new laws. Many geographic phenomena are spatially heterogeneous, which implies they exhibit uncontrolled variance across the surface of the earth and lack a characteristic mean. When a phenomenon is spatially heterogeneous, it may be difficult or impossible to establish baselines or rules for study-to-study comparisons. At the same time, geographic observations are typically spatially dependent, which makes it difficult to isolate the effects of interest for cross-study comparison. In this paper, we discuss how laws describing the spatial variation of phenomena may influence the use of replication in geographic research. Developing a set of shared principles for replication assessment based on fundamental laws of geography is a prerequisite for adapting replication standards to meet the needs of disciplinary subfields while maintaining a shared analytical foundation for convergent spatial research. [Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Aiming at solving the problems of inaccurate segmentation of edge targets, inconsistent segmentation of different types of targets, and slow prediction efficiency on semantic segmentation of high-resolution remote sensing images by classical semantic segmentation network, this study proposed a class feature attention mechanism fused with an improved Deeplabv3+ network called CFAMNet for semantic segmentation of common features in remote sensing images. First, the correlation between classes is enhanced using the class feature attention module to extract and process different categories of semantic information better. Second, the multi-parallel atrous spatial pyramid pooling structure is used to enhance the correlation between spaces, to extract the context information of different scales of an image better. Finally, the encoder-decoder structure is used to refine the segmentation results. The segmentation effect of the proposed network is verified by experiments on the public data set GaoFen image dataset (GID). The experimental results show that the CFAMNet can achieve the mean intersection over union (MIOU) and overall accuracy (OA) of 77.22% and 85.01%, respectively, on the GID, thus surpassing the current mainstream semantic segmentation networks. However, the cost of generating and constructing 3D building models with semantic information is high both in time and in labour. To solve this problem, we developed a web-based interactive system, VGI3D, with the ambition of becoming a VGI platform to collect 3D building models with semantic information by using the power of crowdsourcing. VGI3D is a platform-independent software program that is composed of a spatially relational database (PostgreSQL/PostGIS) for the storage and management of spatially geometrical data and other software modules, allowing users to import, analyse, reconstruct, visualise, modify and export 3D building models according to the OBJ/CityGML standard. In this paper, we present the VGI3D in detail, focusing on relevant technical implementations, and report the results of limited usability testing aimed at optimising the system and user experience. After limited expert and non-expert participants’ testing, we proved the usefulness of VGI3D and its promising value for the 3D modelling community. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) This article presents a novel adaptive edge preserving (aEP) scheme in Markov random fields (MRFs) for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. MRF regularization usually suffered from over-smoothing at boundaries and insufficient refinement within class objects. This work divides and conquers this problem class-by-class, and integrates K ( K−1 )/2 ( K is the class number) aEP maps (aEPMs) in MRF model. Spatial label dependence measure (SLDM) is designed to estimate the interpixel label dependence for given spectral similarity measure. For each class pair, aEPM is optimized by maximizing the difference between intraclass and interclass SLDM. Then, aEPMs are integrated with multilevel logistic (MLL) model to regularize the raw pixelwise labeling obtained by spectral and spectral–spatial methods, respectively. The graph-cuts-based α β -swap algorithm is modified to optimize the designed energy function. Moreover, to evaluate the final refined results at edges and small details thoroughly, segmentation evaluation metrics are introduced. Experiments conducted on real HSI data denote the superiority of aEPMs in evaluation metrics and region consistency, especially in detail preservation. [Termes IGN] système de gestion de bases de données relationnellesRésumé : (auteur) Planners and geospatial analysts have long been using GIS and optimization methods to solve a wide range of spatial decision problems from routing and facility location to political redistricting. However, there has been a notable disconnection between the tools of GIS and optimization, constraining the capability of spatial decision-making in GIS. This article presents relational linear programming (RELP), a new framework and tool for bridging the gap between the two fields by integrating a generic optimization solver into GIS: a solver for integer linear programming (ILP). In particular, we choose relational/spatial databases as the GIS platform. We demonstrate that not only data, but also programs for spatial problems (in the form of ILP) can be managed and executed in SQL inside spatial databases. The main focus of this article is on location modeling, and we show how classic models can be formulated succinctly in a declarative way using SQL. The declarative approach of RELP allows researchers to focus on formulating new spatial decision problems without being bogged down in sophisticated programming. The integrated approach allows data processing and decision-making in one language. Therefore, it brings the power of location modeling to non-specialist GIS practitioners.
