The difference, up to 40% depending on the component, should be taken into account when estimating the biomass available for industrial uses, mainly fuelwood and wood for chemistry.
Context: Basic density is a major variable in the calculation of tree biomass. However, it is usually measured on stem wood only and at breast height.
Aims: The objectives of this study were to compare basic density of stem wood at 1.30 m with other tree components and assess the impact of differences on biomass.
Methods: Three softwood species were studied: Abies alba Mill., Picea abies (L.) H. Karst., Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. X-Ray computed tomography was used to measure density.
Results: Large differences were observed between components. Basic density of components was little influenced by tree size and stand density. Overall, bark, knot and branch biomasses were highly underestimated by using basic density measured at 1.30 m.
Conclusion: Using available wood density databases mainly based on breast height measurements would lead to important biases (up to more than 40%) on biomass estimates for some tree components. The task of dividing a raw trajectory into reasonable sub-trajectories and annotating them based on moving subject’s intentions and application domains remains a challenge. This is due to the highly dynamic nature of individuals’ patterns of movement and the complex relationships between such patterns and surrounding points of interest. In this paper, we present a framework called SEMANTIC-SEG for automatic semantic segmentation of trajectories from GPS readings. For the decomposition component of SEMANTIC-SEG, a moving pattern change detection (MPCD) algorithm is proposed to divide the raw trajectory into segments that are homogeneous in their movement conditions. A generic ontology and a spatiotemporal probability model for segmentation are then introduced to implement a bottom-up ontology-based reasoning for semantic enrichment. The experimental results on three real-world datasets show that MPCD can more effectively identify the semantically significant change-points in a pattern of movement than four existing baseline methods. Moreover, experiments are conducted to demonstrate how the proposed SEMANTIC-SEG framework can be applied. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This article presents an empirical user study that compares eight multidimensional projection techniques for supporting the estimation of the number of clusters, k, embedded in six multidimensional data sets. The selection of the techniques was based on their intended design, or use, for visually encoding data structures, that is, neighborhood relations between data points or groups of data points in a data set. Concretely, we study: the difference between the estimates of k as given by participants when using different multidimensional projections; the accuracy of user estimations with respect to the number of labels in the data sets; the perceived usability of each multidimensional projection; whether user estimates disagree with k values given by a set of cluster quality measures; and whether there is a difference between experienced and novice users in terms of estimates and perceived usability. The results show that: dendrograms (from Ward’s hierarchical clustering) are likely to lead to estimates of k that are different from those given with other multidimensional projections, while Star Coordinates and Radial Visualizations are likely to lead to similar estimates; t-Stochastic Neighbor Embedding is likely to lead to estimates which are closer to the number of labels in a data set; cluster quality measures are likely to produce estimates which are different from those given by users using Ward and t-Stochastic Neighbor Embedding; U-Matrices and reachability plots will likely have a low perceived usability; and there is no statistically significant difference between the answers of experienced and novice users. Moreover, as data dimensionality increases, cluster quality measures are likely to produce estimates which are different from those perceived by users using any of the assessed multidimensional projections. It is also apparent that the inherent complexity of a data set, as well as the capability of each visual technique to disclose such complexity, has an influence on the perceived usability. [Termes IGN] Open geospatial consortiumRésumé : (auteur) Studying and planning urban evolution is essential for understanding the past and designing the cities of the future and can be facilitated by providing means for sharing, visualizing, and navigating in cities, on the web, in space and in time. Standard formats, methods, and tools exist for visualizing large-scale 3D cities on the web. In this paper, we go further by integrating the temporal dimension of cities in geospatial web delivery standard formats. In doing so, we enable interactive visualization of large-scale time-evolving 3D city models on the web. A key characteristic of this paper lies in the proposed four-step generic approach. First, we design a generic conceptual model of standard formats for delivering 3D cities on the web. Then, we formalize and integrate the temporal dimension of cities into this generic conceptual model. Following which, we specify the conceptual model in the 3D Tiles standard at logical and technical specification levels, resulting in an extension of 3D Tiles for delivering time-evolving 3D city models on the web. Finally, we propose an open-source implementation, experiments, and an evaluation of the propositions and visualization rules. We also provide access to reproducibility notes allowing researchers to replicate all the experiments.
