[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The geographical information systems (GIS) community has over the years captured and generated large amounts of geographical data. Discovery of these heterogeneous data sets is our main concern. Research described in this paper is focussed on one component of a Georesource Centre, an infrastructure facilitating the sharing of geographical data and processes among organisations. The role of this component, the Selector Broker, is to process metadata queries in the search for appropriate data sets. Processing of queries within the Selector Broker involves translation of the metadata semantics and query syntax. There are several ways such a translation can be done and we have adopted the direct translation of semantics and syntax in this paper. In direct translation, semantic and syntactic differences are mapped directly between systems without going through an intermediate system. In the design of the Centre, organisations use the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to store entries of geographical data sets they have collected. The Selector Broker processes these entries using pre-defined semantic and syntactic mappings to translate the initial queries. The service provided by the Selector Broker is accessed through the Common Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Gazeteers and geographical thesauri can be regarded as parsimonious spatial models that associate geographical location with place names and encode some semantic relations between the names. They are of particular value in processing information retrieval requests in which the user employs place names to specify geographical context. Typically the geometric locational data in a gazetteer are confined to a simple footprint in the form of a centroid or a minimum bounding rectangle, both of which can be used to link to a map but are of limited value in determining spatial relationships. Here we describe a Voronoi diagram method for generating approximate regional extents from sets of centroids that are respectively inside and external to a region. The resulting approximations provide measures of areal extent and can be used to assist in answering geographical queries by evaluating spatial relationships such as distance, direction and common boundary length. Preliminary experimental evaluations of the method have been performed in the context of a semantic modelling system that combines the centroid data with hierarchical and adjacency relations between the associated place names. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Conventionally, spatial data models have been designed according to object- or field-based conceptualizations of reality. Conceptualization of complex geographic phenomena that have both object and field-like properties, such as wildfire and precipitation, has not yet been incorporated into GIS data models. To this end, a new conceptual framework is proposed in this research for organizing data about such complex geographic phenomena in a GIS as a hierarchy of events, processes, and states. In this framework, discrete objects are used to show how events and processes progress in space and time, and fields are used to model how states of geographic themes vary in a space-time frame. Precipitation is used to demonstrate the construction and application of the proposed framework with digital precipitation data from April 15 to May 22, 1998, for the state of Oklahoma, U.S.A. With the proposed framework, two sets of algorithms have been developed. One set automatically assembles precipitation events and processes from the data and stores the precipitation data in the hierarchy of events, processes, and states, so that attributes about events, processes, and states are readily available for information query. The other set of algorithms computes information about the spatio-temporal behavior and interaction of events and processes. The proposed approach greatly enhances support for complex spatio-temporal queries on the behavior and relationships of events and processes. Note de contenu : 1.CONTEXTE

Note de contenu : INTRODUCTION
