[Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (auteur) In urban areas, information concerning very high resolution land cover and especially material maps are necessary for several city modelling or monitoring applications. That is to say, knowledge concerning the roofing materials or the different kinds of ground areas is required. Airborne remote sensing techniques appear to be convenient for providing such information at a large scale. However, results obtained using most traditional processing methods based on usual red-green-blue-near infrared multispectral images remain limited for such applications. A possible way to improve classification results is to enhance the imagery spectral resolution using superspectral or hyperspectral sensors. In this study, it is intended to design a superspectral sensor dedicated to urban materials classification and this work particularly focused on the selection of the optimal spectral band subsets for such sensor. First, reflectance spectral signatures of urban materials were collected from 7 spectral libraires. Then, spectral optimization was performed using this data set. The band selection workflow included two steps, optimising first the number of spectral bands using an incremental method and then examining several possible optimised band subsets using a stochastic algorithm. The same wrapper relevance criterion relying on a confidence measure of Random Forests classifier was used at both steps. To cope with the limited number of available spectra for several classes, additional synthetic spectra were generated from the collection of reference spectra: intra-class variability was simulated by multiplying reference spectra by a random coefficient. At the end, selected band subsets were evaluated considering the classification quality reached using a rbf svm classifier. It was confirmed that a limited band subset was sufficient to classify common urban materials. The important contribution of bands from the Short Wave Infra-Red (SWIR) spectral domain (1000–2400 nm) to material classification was also shown. [Termes IGN] SIFT (algorithme)Résumé : (auteur) Multiple classifiers on the dissimilarity space are proposed to address the problem of forest species recognition from microscopic images. To that end, classical texture-based features such as Gabor filters, local binary patterns (LBP) and local phase quantization (LPQ), as well as two keypoint-based features, the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) and the speeded up robust features (SURF), are used to generate a pool of diverse classifiers on the dissimilarity space. A comprehensive set of experiments on a database composed of 2,240 microscopic images from 112 different forest species was used to evaluate the performance of each individual classifier of the generated pool, the combination of all classifiers, and different dynamic selection of classifiers (DSC) methods. The best result (93.03 %) was observed by incorporating probabilistic information in a DSC method based on multiple classifier behavior. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) This thesis focusses on the task of navigating an autonomous vehicle along a previously driven path using feedback obtained from a camera system. The desired path is stored in the form of a “visual memory”, essentially a collection of images, captured when the vehicle was first driven along the path. Algorithms of this form find applications in many semi-autonomous inspection/exploration tasks, where the vehicle is initially navigated by an operator, using the visual data for other purposes. On completion of the task, the operator has provided the autonomous vehicle with all the information it needs to find its way back to the starting location, and potentially repeat the entire trip. By using reference images recorded along the initial path, the system is afforded a form of global localisation using only local sensing, by providing relative information to specific key-points within the environment.
The work presented in this thesis uses, as a base, two well established path following controllers, and extends these control algorithms into the visual domain, by deriving the required parameters of each of the controllers from information gathered in the images. One of the key focus points of this work is the use of only the bearing (yaw) information from the images. By only working with feature bearing information we essentially reduce the number of parameters by half (by ignoring elevation) without sacrificing performance on 2D-manifolds.
The first controller extends the well-known shortest distance to path control algorithm, by deriving a scaled distance to path and relative orientation from the visual memory. Using the scaled distance to path, we incorporate the unknown scale that typically plagues vision-based systems, into the controller to remove the velocity dependence of the control law. This algorithm was implemented and tested in an indoor environment with a motion capture system.
The second controller extends a model predictive control (MPC) based algorithm, derived during the 2007 DARPA Grand Challenge and initially reliant on GPS information, to make use of image data, thereby alleviating the need for GPS position information. To achieve this, a novel image-based cost function is proposed that can relate the relative distances between several images. This cost function guides the choice of control trajectories to minimise the computed cost from the reference path. The performance of the proposed cost function is examined in detail, including the effects of the number of features, average distance to feature, feature observation noise and the number of outliers.
To use this cost function, the control algorithm also needs an indication of how future actions will affect the cost, and to this end feature extrapolation becomes necessary. With limited visual information, and short baselines, this process is often not very successful, and various techniques are presented to improve the performance. These include the weighting of features based on their error prediction, and the reduction of the prediction horizon required by the controller.
This control algorithm was demonstrated in both urban and extra-urban settings over paths on the order of 400m where the performance is shown to be comparable to that of differential GPS. Finally, it is also shown how the algorithm can be simply adapted to incorporate collision avoidance behaviour during the path replay in the event that the environment has changed between recording and playback.

[Termes IGN] réductionRésumé : (auteur) Due to the large diversity of existing feature descriptors in content-based image retrieval, the image contents can be better represented by the joint use of several descriptors in order to explore their potentially complementary characteristics. This paper presents and discusses a strategy for fusion of the different multidimensional features involved, based on inverted multi-indices and dedicated to similarity search. Image descriptors are quantized separately and efficiently through dimension reduction techniques, before being combined in the inverted multi-indices. To exhibit its effectiveness, the proposal is evaluated on two datasets having different contents and sizes, facing several state-of-the-art approaches of image descriptor fusion. The obtained results reconfirm that the joint use of several descriptions improves similarity search, and show that our fusion proposal outperforms other solutions, while manipulating lower or similar volumes of features.
