[Termes IGN] simulation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Land-cover maps are important science products needed for natural resource and ecosystem service management, biodiversity conservation planning, and assessing human-induced and natural drivers of land change. Analysis of hyperspectral, or imaging spectrometer, imagery has shown an impressive capacity to map a wide range of natural and anthropogenic land cover. Applications have been mostly with single-date imagery from relatively small spatial extents. Future hyperspectral satellites will provide imagery at greater spatial and temporal scales, and there is a need to assess techniques for mapping land cover with these data. Here we used simulated multi-temporal HyspIRI satellite imagery over a 30,000 km2 area in the San Francisco Bay Area, California to assess its capabilities for mapping classes defined by the international Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). We employed a mapping methodology and analysis framework that is applicable to regional and global scales. We used the Random Forests classifier with three sets of predictor variables (reflectance, MNF, hyperspectral metrics), two temporal resolutions (summer, spring-summer-fall), two sample scales (pixel, polygon) and two levels of classification complexity (12, 20 classes). Hyperspectral metrics provided a 16.4–21.8% and 3.1–6.7% increase in overall accuracy relative to MNF and reflectance bands, respectively, depending on pixel or polygon scales of analysis. Multi-temporal metrics improved overall accuracy by 0.9–3.1% over summer metrics, yet increases were only significant at the pixel scale of analysis. Overall accuracy at pixel scales was 72.2% (Kappa 0.70) with three seasons of metrics. Anthropogenic and homogenous natural vegetation classes had relatively high confidence and producer and user accuracies were over 70%; in comparison, woodland and forest classes had considerable confusion. We next focused on plant functional types with relatively pure spectra by removing open-canopy shrublands, woodlands and mixed forests from the classification. This 12-class map had significantly improved accuracy of 85.1% (Kappa 0.83) and most classes had over 70% producer and user accuracies. Finally, we summarized important metrics from the multi-temporal Random Forests to infer the underlying chemical and structural properties that best discriminated our land-cover classes across seasons. My main professional activities, since my PhD defence in 2010, in the MATIS team of the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN), are described here. It may also include recall to previous works of the 2007-2010 period. I was recruited in the research department of IGN in 2005, being a civil servant. I first started as engineer on 3D airborne lidar point cloud processing in urban, natural, and seashore environments during the 2005-2007 period. Then, I focused on the emerging fullwaveform lidar technology during my PhD thesis, with a slight emphasis on urban areas (2007-2010). Since 2010, I took the lead of the research group that deals with land-cover mapping and change detection as well as 2D/3D geodatabase evaluation. Now, it encompasses more generally semantization and reconstruction issues for scene understanding. I naturally moved from airborne lidar data to any kind of geospatial/overhead remote sensing data (mainly satellite and airborne vertical imagery). Some of the developed methods has been eventually specialized to 3D terrestrial point clouds. [...] Note de contenu : PART ONE - SCIENTIFIC SYNTHESIS

[Termes IGN] teneur en carboneRésumé : (auteur) Forests and their changes are important to the regional and global carbon cycle, biodiversity and ecosystem services. Some uncertainty about forest cover area in China calls for an accurate and updated forest cover map. In this study, we combined ALOS PALSAR orthorectified 50-m mosaic images (FBD mode with HH and HV polarization) and MODIS time series data in 2010 to map forests in China. We used MODIS-based NDVI dataset (MOD13Q1, 250-m spatial resolution) to generate a map of annual maximum NDVI and used it to mask out built-up lands, barren lands, and sparsely vegetated lands. We developed a decision tree classification algorithm to identify forest and non-forest land cover, based on the signature analysis of PALSAR backscatter coefficient data. The PALSAR-based algorithm was then applied to produce a forest cover map in China in 2010. The resulting forest/non-forest classification map has an overall accuracy of 96.2% and a Kappa Coefficient of 0.91. The resultant 50-m PALSAR-based forest cover map was compared to five forest cover databases. The total forest area (2.02 × 106 km2) in China from the PALSAR-based forest map is close to the forest area estimates from China National Forestry Inventory (1.95 × 106 km2), JAXA (2.00 × 106 km2), and FAO FRA (2.07 × 106 km2). There are good linear relationships between the PALSAR-based forest map and the forest maps from the JAXA, MCD12Q1, and NLCD-China datasets at the province and county scales. All the forest maps have similar spatial distributions of forest/non-forest at pixel scale. Our PALSAR-based forest map recognizes well the agro-forests in China. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of integrating PALSAR and MODIS images to map forests in large areas. The resultant map of forest cover in China in 2010 can be used for many studies such as forest carbon cycle and ecological restoration. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Land-Cover databases (LC-DB) are mandatory for environmental purposes, but need to be regularly updated to provide robust and instructive spatial indicators. Moreover, an increasing number of sensors, such as optical and SAR satellite images or Lidar point cloud, allow to cover large areas regularly, and with a very high precision. Thus, automatic methods have to be developed to take into account the complementarity of available observations. In this paper, several fusion methods are proposed and introduced in an existing Land-Cover mapping framework. Those methods are compared on several scenarii (based on optical, SAR and Lidar datasets), and evaluated thanks to a very high resolution LC-DB.
