[Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) The CORINE land cover (CLC) data derived from satellite images for the period of the 1990s and 2000 (± one year) provide information about land cover changes for a substantial part of Europe. Availability of these data can contribute to new approaches to the assessment of the European landscape, for instance in the context of environmental and economic accounting, diversity, modelling of its properties, etc. These possibilities are given by the fact that land cover reflects the biophysical state of the real landscape. The paper contains information about frequency and areas of CLC and their changes in the period 1990–2000, but above all in the processes – flows (LCF) that take place in the European landscape. Results of statistical analysis and maps demonstrate the frequency and rate (by two values: one above and another below the mean LCF rates) of the following processes: urbanisation (LCF1), intensification of agriculture (LCF2), extensification of agriculture (LCF3), afforestation (LCF4), deforestation (LCF5) and construction of water bodies (LCF6). LCF1 was most conspicuous in the Netherlands (2.1% of total country's area), LCF2 in Ireland (3.3%), LCF3 in the Czech Republic (over 3.5%), LCF4 in Portugal (over 4%), LCF5 in Portugal (over 3.5%) and LCF6 in the Netherlands and Slovakia (over 0.1%). The overall area of identified land cover changes in 24 European countries in the period 1990–2000 was around 88,000 km2 which equals 2.5% of their total area. Details presented concerning the LCF frequency and rate will certainly contribute to the overall awareness and anticipation of possible developments in the European landscape. Note de contenu : - Les sources de données

[Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) The response of environment to ashfall was evaluated aiming at defining the vulnerability in the areas surrounding Mt. Etna volcano, Sicily. The two utilized scenarios assume different thickness of ashfall, over distances comparable with those covered by deposits from realistic eruptions that occurred recently on the volcano. The fall episodes are considered instantaneous or with a duration of 90 days. These models are in agreement with the actual and recent activity of the volcano. The evaluation of vulnerability was performed by a GIS-based method, accordingly with the different themes that constitute the Corine Land Cover inventory of the study area and discovering the potentially damaged elements following the two hypothesized scenarios. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a simple and adaptive methodology for large area forest/non-forest mapping using Landsat ETM+ imagery and CORINE Land Cover 2000. The methodology is based on scene-by-scene analysis and supervised classification. The fully automated processing chain consists of several phases, including image segmentation, clustering, adaptive spectral representativity analysis, training data extraction and nearest-neighbour classification. This method was used to produce a European forest/non-forest map through the processing of 415 Landsat ETM+ scenes. The resulting forest/non-forest map was validated with three independent data sets. The results show that the map’s overall point-level agreement with our validation data generally exceeds 80%, and approaches 90% in central European conditions. Comparison with country-level forest area statistics shows that in most cases the difference between the forest proportion of the derived map and that computed from the published forest area statistics is below 5%. [Termes IGN] Mercator (logiciel)Résumé : (Editeur) The contributions in this book address the use of ‘different’ geo-communication tools that could allow for improved visualization of geography- by incorporating ART. It is envisaged that the work of this book will help to re-define how we can better visualise Space and Place, considering: Science, Technology and Art. The book is therefore a celebration of the ‘meeting point’ between Art and Cartography. It provides a starting point for a journey that will explore innovative methods and techniques for representing our world using the complementary techniques from Art, Science and technology.
