[Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (Auteur) Fluvial corridor quality assessment requires that historical data be collected at a regional scale. In this article, our goal is to assess potential map resources to explore riverscape changes at a regional network scale and to define key issues in using an automated vectorization protocol to characterize such changes on such a large scale. We consider IGN’s Nouvelle Carte de France a potentially good resource for our objective of two-date (oldest + actual vector database) comparisons on 1:20,000–1:25,000 scale maps, notably when applied at a regional scale. The French IGN corpus is a good example of topographic maps that were produced in the twentieth century in Europe with fairly homogeneous data over a whole national territory. Moreover, the digitization and georeferencing processes applied by IGN are very accurate. The evolution of conventional features is not as significant for the hydrographic theme and should not be a problem for automatic vectorization. The potential temporal coverage is from 1922 to 1993, but the complexity of the sheet divisions, partial revisions, and the heterogeneity of coverage over time prevent multidate analysis. [Termes IGN] précision cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The US Topo is a new generation of digital topographic maps delivered by the US Geological Survey (USGS). These maps include contours in the traditional 7.5-min quadrangle format. The process for producing digital elevation contours has evolved over several years, but automated production of contours for the US Topo product began in 2010. This process, which is quite complex yet fairly elegant, automatically chooses the proper USGS quadrangle, captures the corresponding 1/3 as grid points from the national elevation data set (3D Elevation Program), and adjusts elevation data to better fit water features from the National Hydrography Dataset. After additional processing, such as identifying and tagging depressions, constructing proper contours across double-line streams, and omitting contours from water bodies, contours are automatically produced for the quadrangle. The resulting contours are then compared to the contours on the original (legacy) topographic map sheets, or to the 10-m contours from the original map sheets. Where the elevation surface used to generate the contours has been derived from the previously published contours for a quadrangle, the generated contours match the legacy contours quite well. Where newer elevation sources, such as lidar, originate the elevation surface, generated contours may vary significantly from the previous cartographically produced contours due to more accurate representations of the surface, and less reliance on cartographic interpretation. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Supervised classification is the fundamental task for landcover map generation. Deep neural networks recently outperformed other state-of-the-art classifiers in many machine learning challenges, from semantic segmentation to speech recognition. Such strategies are now commonly employed in the literature for the purpose of land-cover mapping. This paper develops the strategy for the use of deep networks to label very high resolution satellite images, with the perspective of mapping regions at country scale. Therefore, a superpixel based method is introduced in order to (i) ensure correct delineation of objects and (ii) perform the classification in a dense way but with decent computing times. [Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Airborne laser scanning data (ALS) are used mainly for creation of precise digital elevation models. However, it appears that the informative potential stored in ALS data can be also used for updating spatial databases, including the Database of Topographic Objects (BDOT10k). Typically, geometric representations of buildings in the BDOT10k are equal to their entities in the Land and Property Register (EGiB). In this study ALS is considered as supporting data source. The thresholding method of original ALS data with the use of the alpha shape algorithm, proposed in this paper, allows for extraction of points that represent horizontal cross section of building walls, leading to creation of vector, geometric models of buildings that can be then used for updating the BDOT10k. This method gives also the possibility of an easy verification of up-to-dateness of both the BDOT10k and the district EGiB databases within geometric information about buildings. For verification of the proposed methodology there have been used the classified ALS data acquired with a density of 4 points/m2. The accuracy assessment of the identified building outlines has been carried out by their comparison to the corresponding EGiB objects. The RMSE values for 78 buildings are from a few to tens of centimeters and the average value is about 0,5 m. At the same time for several objects there have been revealed huge geometric discrepancies. Further analyses have shown that these discrepancies could be resulted from incorrect representations of buildings in the EGiB database.
